This isn't like Roseanne, where the offensive material is fresh. It was ten years ago! Anyone who makes a point of digging up ten year old tweets needs to get a life, and I bet their own social media history contains things they're not proud of.

I've no idea what he posted, but he posted them, as sure as eggs is eggs they would be dug up, but having no idea what he posted I can't judge if this is an over reaction or not, but them merely being in the past is not an excuse in of itself.

He was in his 40s when he posted that stuff - not exactly some kid who's got some growing up to do. When exactly is the moratorium where anything you say that was disgusting can't be used against you because it was too long ago? 5 years? 7? That's a non-argument. I don't think he should have been fired, personally, but he's a leading light at Disney's biggest franchise - what was going to happen? The guy started his career, and ended up a big player at, Troma. Anyone wanting to be offended...check out some of their stuff. But they weren't a conglomerate with a family audience in the billions.

Ten year old Tweets or not, I'd sack him too.

Does he still express these views? Do they influence his behaviour at work or his films from the last few years? I can't help but feel that this material was leaked because it's such a hot button issue at the moment.

Yeah, the things he said were definitely crossing a line, but there are a couple of points I want to address. Firstly, the reasons this was unearthed is disgusting, not that it takes away from the tweets but it’s quite disappointing that because Gunn was anti-trump, there was a intentional smear campaign. This sentiment applies to all situations iincluding anyone. No one should be targeted or villified for the beliefs. Secondly, I do hope that Gunn is able to make amends with all parties involved for his actions. Everyone should also have that right, again regardless of beliefs.

Quite well said. There should always be consequences for someone’s actions, no matter when it happened, but I can’t help but feel that this desicion might not have been the appropriate one, however this is said with only just been familiarized with the news and not having ample time to come up with a proper solution, so it still may very well be.

I can pretty much guarantee if this was a less popular director, not a geek fave and he hadn't been dropped from one of the biggest franchises ever that he has helped birth....there'd be a few more objective views. If these exact same tweets came from a first-time director no-one would be surprised he'd been canned.
It's a sad chapter close, maybe an end, to a dazzling career many of us have followed since Tromeo And Juliet.

A. Good Riddance
B. The Tweets just happen to sufure the day before he's due to represent the firm at Comi-Con?

But why would Marvel hire him in the first place if they knew about these tweets? Yes the tweets are pretty abhorrent and a terrible attempt at humour, but Marvel hires him knowing these existed and then fired him once they were unearthed to make themselves look good? What?

Yes the tweets are pretty abhorrent and a terrible attempt at humour, but Marvel hires him knowing these existed and then fired him once they were unearthed to make themselves look good? What? Marvel aka Disney must have known about the remarks but chose to look the other way until the point where they didn't. Much like ABC aka Disney chose to ignore all the various offensive remarks Rosanne Barr made over the years up until the point where they didn't. The difference between Barr & Gunn should be obvious to everyone. Barr blames everything and everyone but herself for her fall. Gunn took his hit and owned up to his remarks. That is something at least. I've followed Gunn online for several years now and I do believe in recent years he has had a change of perspective. That said, I don't know that that excuses those things he had written or said.
From Marvel's point of view, it certainly leaves a huge hole in their plans. Considering how well they were portrayed in Avengers: Infinity War, I wonder if the Russo Brothers could be tempted into taking on volume 3.

They're gonna be on Avengers 4 till next Spring. Guardians is still slated for 2020....don't think there's time. I'm not sure they'd do a standalone solo film after doing the tentpole. I don't think Disney'll struggle for takers. What about Josh Trank, Lord and Miller or Edgar Wright? Ahhh, the Mouse House'll just get Ron Howard in again.

That said, I guess there is always Joss Whedon.

Right now, he might not be the best replacement for James Gunn in theses circumstances due to his serial cheating fiasco earlier this year, and I'm pretty sure when your replacing someone due to scandal, you don't replace them with someone who did something worse.

Actions have consequences & this has clearly come back to bite him on the ass, Marvel can't be seen to condone that sort of behaviour, 10 yrs or 10 minutes ago he posted those vile tweets.
Karma James, maybe think about the consequences of your actions next time you decide to post such vile bafflegab.
