I’ve had spammy pop-up ads before, but nothing to do with spyware.

It seems likely to me, that freeforums.net has across the board been marked by whoever provides your antivirus/security software as malware site, which of course could be true in so much as its perfectly possible that one of the thousands of forums hosted by freeforums.net is a Spyware host or discussion or whatever area.
But if this is the case, your security software should not be tarring the entire domain with the same brush.
