It comes out next May, and is being recorded at present. I predict: - UNIT will face public scrutiny. The end of Extinction had a voice compelling people not to fall for the cover story.
- No returning monsters. David Richardson and Ken Bentley say as much in the extras.
- UNIT will be forced to close due to public backlash, and it will have been an alien plot to invade Earth unimpeded.
- Some people will have developed an immunity to UNIT's usual memory erasing techniques, leaving Kate and Osgood with the dilemma of either going to extreme measures to get rid of awkward memories or leaving the memories intact.
- Exploration of Kate and Osgood as characters. We've not got much recent background from Kate, pretty much all we have for her is Downtime. Shutdown is a good place to catch up with her son Gordon (Gordy in Downtime, named after his grandfather). It's also a good time to learn more about Osgood, her family (is she related to the UNIT soldier from The Daemons?) and how she gets on with them. In Day of the Doctor her Zygon double mentioned that Osgood's sister makes her feel bad. A reconciliation perhaps?
- The repercussions of Josh having a plastic skeleton. Not anything like a returning Nestene threat, but how it affects his health.
- Obstructive bureaucrat(s) limiting or impeding UNIT's movements. They were a staple of the Pertwee era, and they aren't the kind to die out. Hit 'em where they're weak, their pensions!

Apparently, the name Kate Stewart was an intresting concidetial creative overlap (Chris Chibnell had never seen Downtime and named the character), so whether or not Big Finish will incoperate elements from Downtime remains unclear.

No one in the production team has flat out denied that the Kate Stewart in Downtime is the same one in the new series.

I imagine that they will be going for smaller, more introspective stories about UNIT this time round rather then the all-out epic of the first. Also, I love your ideas for the second box set, Jbmasta

Also, I love your ideas for the second box set, Jbmasta The intended Stargate SG-1 film, Stargate: Revolution, was rumoured to have been about the public learning about the Stargate program (you can't keep explaining away those spaceship battles and missing buildings as meteorites). It'll be interesting if this is the route Shutdown takes, because while UNIT can get rid of alien invaders a more well thought out answer needs to be found to deal with the people who live on the planet already.

Since Kate and UNIT are still making appearances on the TV show, and already have made appearances set after these boxsets, I'm sure that nothing will happen to permanently change the status quo. I suspect that Jacqui will continue to try to expose UNIT's activities, but I'm not sure whether that will be the main plot, or just a subplot. Maybe Captain Carter can become friends with Rory now.

Judging by the title, I'd say they get shutdown, but you can't always go by titles.

I'd love them to establish some continuity with previous Big Finish UNIT stories this time.

Klein or Chaudry come back to help out with the new problem and keep UNIT alive

Or Charlie Sato and Ruth Matheson get reassigned to the Black Archive.

There's still quite a bit of drama to be mined from Jacqui's presence however - does the public have a right to know about aliens? How far is Kate willing to go to protect the public?

Do you think tat Warren Browns character may appear in the TV series after awhile? I felt that his character was hyped up a bit in the marketing. Despite Sam Bishop only being in one and a bit stories (#2 Earthfall and some of #3 Armageddon), he's third on the cast list and included in the metadata for the audiobook along with Jemma and Ingrid! We're told he's the go-to guy in an emergency and is like a super agent or something, but he doesn't come off that way. Captain Josh Carter, as played by James Joyce, is present in all four episodes and makes a bigger impact on the story.

Having two action hero young officers felt redundant to me, though since I found Captain Carter really, really annoying (and expect him to be more so in later box sets) I suppose it's nice to not have him filling the role all the time.

Oh, I loved Josh Carter. I thought his character was used quite well. {Spoiler} I was annoyed when I thought he was going to just be the character that you got attached to and then turned traitor. I thought it was a good plot twist that they were able to turn him back and use his, um...plasticness, as part of the story.

I think Carter made the bigger impact for me because of his role at the end of the story. I did like the little we heard of Bishop as well but I don't feel I got a good grasp on either of their characters. Hence I am hoping for more character development & insight in subsequent box sets.
