Hello again. Peter Davison presented a Doctor who didn't always save the day. He was a dashing youthful hero who was often underestimated by enemies because of his appearance.
On audio he is slightly more abrasive and impatient with those who don't take his advice or believe him. You get these bitter frustrated asides from him.
My Davison listen will be more fragmented but will feature some stories I have not heard, so my reaction will be more recent.

I think Peter Davison really shines on Big Finish and love the recent Adric Tegan and Nyssa stories a lot.

Yeah I think he really shines on audio too. They emphasise more on his sarcastic temperament and the older voice just works. I love his solo stories from Classic Doctors, New Monsters and River Song especially.

I think Davison has got better in the last few years. Certainly, the stories this year with him in it have been very, very good. As mentioned, I particularly like the more sardonic/sarcastic approach that is being developed. I know Davison isn't known for playing the Doctor in a comical way (I think JNT/Saward banned this if I recall) but it does suit his Doctor - especially as he is usually soooo nice to everyone. I really hope this continues to be developed.
Unlike Colin Baker, I've found Davison a bit hit and miss. There are some trilogies that are, to put it bluntly, very dire (Moonflesh, Tombship, Rat Trap, etc.) and others that start well but flag towards the end. Big Finish, hopefully, seem to have got this sorted now and the only stinker (in my opinion) that Davison has done recently is Mistfall (back in Jan 2015).
Out of all the TV Doctors, Big Finish are rather *boxed in* with Davison as he served a full run of episodes. Whilst I like the Season 19 TARDIS Crew, I do wonder what Big Finish can do with the character to push the Fifth Doctor in a new direction. Perhaps some stories where his guilt for not saving Adric comes back to the fore - after all, it's the last word the Fifth says before he regenerates in Caves of Androzani (might explain why he's so gung-ho in that story!)
Again, as with Colin Baker - Big Finish have really revitalised Davison's era so bravo to that. They just need to get McCoy sorted - he's not a poor Doctor but his run of stories has been significantly below par compared to the other Doctors.

Peter Davison has not been my favorite of the Doctors, but he's definitely had some very fine moments both in the TV series and on audio. I usually find myself liking his stories better than I expected I would.

You know i love Tombship i find it a real adventure story i always listen after all the advertising is over and knowing how hard it is to write a story i appreciate them as I couldn’t write for tuppence

Ive liked a lot of 5th doctor. And I never get bored of Tegan haha. Listening to Janet Fielding in the CD extras just cracks me up. Wish Peter and Janet's CD extras were longer

Same...there’s something magical about his audios...you begin to really appreciate his interpretaion Magical's definitely the word for it. Listening to stuff like Loups-Garoux, you get the impression that this character shouldn't exist. There shouldn't be someone who embodies all those classic virtues touted in the Hero. Yet he does, and there's something wonderful about that. He's a walking, talking pleasant surprise of a being.

I'm not the biggest fan of Five on TV, but I love his audios. I find so many of his are among the best Who that BF has done. Iterations of I, Creatures of Beauty, River Song, The Stockbridge Trilogy, Aquitaine, Equilibrium, The Peterloo Massacre and so many more, especially The KIngmaker. Davison is so good at humor that you really feel that JNT really missed the boat keeping him so straight during his run. I do appreciate him more now that I have heard all of his BF work than I did before.

I love Loups-Garoux because, well, the script's beautifully crafted, but also because it gives Five that extra dimension they shied away from on television. There's a really great scene with the werewolves scenting him nearby and they describe him in poetry. Something along the lines of: He's everything he appears -- warm, kind, benevolent -- but the story hints at there also something else... Even among the wolves, he doesn't fit. He doesn't belong to the Earth, nor among the stars like Turlough. He possesses an almost elemental, mystical quality. An otherness. He knows things a man of his age and apparent background shouldn't know. It's only hinted at, but it's a great way to gently stretch the limits of his personality. Davison's got great comedic timing. I think part of the charm in the humour is that the character is so straitlaced, he takes everything in stride. Right up to being coshed over the head by the Royal High Concussor in The Kingmaker.

Loups Garoux is excellent and a very imaginative story. Part of a solid run of stories from the 'early days' of BF when things were a bit more experimental and creative in the MR. Emerald Tiger is a fantastic release. Solid story and a great opener to that trilogy.

Davison is so good at humor that you really feel that JNT really missed the boat keeping him so straight during his run. I do appreciate him more now that I have heard all of his BF work than I did before. Looked it up. JNT wanted the humour cut down from the show from the start of his tenure. Even Baker was told to cut this from Season 18. If I recall correctly (please don't quote me on it) JNT wasn't keen on the more comedic/whimsical approach of Graham Williams/Douglas Adams and wanted to rein this in and focus more on the 'science' element of sci-fi. This is seen in Season 18 - the E-Space stuff with CVEs and Logopolis. Baker wasn't happy with this approach (along with other changes) and it is one of the things that led to his departure. I presume that the same approach was adopted when Davison took over - it had already been the approach with Baker - but as there had been some humour comedy in the late 1970s seasons, the contrast is more profound between the two Doctors. I've also noticed that Davison's audios have got slightly more *political* over the recent years. Equilibrium/Entropy Plague was a subtle dig at the politics of austerity/refugees (Balancer Skaarsgard in Equilibrium could be a certain former Chancellor of the Exchequer?!) Similarly, in the Peterloo Massacre there are hints at 'Time LORDS' and the plight of the working classes. As someone who isn't keen on the British Royal Family, the satire in Kingdom of Lies is great. Perhaps this is the result of Davison's desire to develop the character in his own way or a change in style with BF. Certainly far more interesting than the 80s approach, which sadly, characterised Davison's Doctor as the 'wet vet'.

I have heard emerald Tiger is a well thought of story.Personally i enjoy the first outings of Big Finish such as Singularity and the Erimem and peri stories. But i find stories that i did not enjoy the first time around i end up enjoying further down the line and realise personal mood and expectations have a lot of influence. Some of the latest TV offerings i did not enjoy when first shown but later find something to enjoy. After listening to Moffats interviews yesterday, let us be honest Doctor Who is a tricky show and not being a writer i have every respect for them in their endeavours. No one deliberately goes out to write a rotten story and pressures and deadlines influence things. long may the TV program and the Big Finish releases continue.

I lost Doctor Who as a “passionate pursuit” when Tom departed and that passion never returned until Big Finish started.
There are still several stories in TV from the Fifth Doctor onwards that I haven’t seen, but I have enjoyed his audio adventures. There was a thread awhile back about biggest surprises and my enjoyment of the Fifth Doctor on audio is probably my biggest surprise.
The has two long and highly enjoyable eras on audio “Peri & Erimem” and then the “Older Nyssa”. I think it might be time for me to do a re-listen.
I have taken a break from the more recent month range, but I can say that I enjoyed the return of Adric in The Fifth Doctor boxset.

Quality Fifth Doctor stories go to Bradley's Basement, Tim Bradley has written some bonafide gems with the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa & new companion Billy Walker.
Tim knows this era inside out, excellent writer.
