The Little Mermaid I remember climbing under the seat and screaming when the lights went down before the film/trailers started because i was intensely scared of the dark. But i was fine once it all started lol

I *think* it was the Tim Burton Charlie and the Chocolate Factory remake. I turned around and put my face of the cinema seat during the scene when Violet becomes a blueberry because it always scared me when I saw it in the original on VHS. Yes, I’m young. First film I can remember seeing in theatres is Elmo in Grouchland, which the internet says was released in 1999. After that it might have been Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, that’s the first one I can visualise the location of the movie theatre, or at least the McDonalds Dad took us to afterwards. I can also recall seeing Shrek, and there was an intermission. Looking up the dates is really surprising.

Finding Nemo is the first one I remember, the opening scene of the film left one hell of nightmarish impression. It's actually a bloody scary film from a kids perspective-very good film though. Probably wasn't my first time in a cinema, but it's the earliest memory I've got. Come to think of it, I may have seen that or The Polar Express in the cinema first. I remember Finding Nemo, that had an intermission. I actually first saw Polar Express on not quite legal DVD that the teacher brought in. It wasn’t until I watched in theatres that I learned what the words on the tickets were. I tend to remember movies by the memories I associate with when I watched them. Scooby Doo I saw in Singapore, when there were riots in India and we weren’t in India for obvious reasons.

I’m early 20’s and I feel old. There’s still grumbling about the music and yelling at kids to get off our lawns.

Not sure, I remember seeing Saturday morning Flash Gordon episodes at the cinema, but the first proper movie I can remember seeing was a Disney film, so Peter Pan or Dumbo as I definitely saw them with my sister as a kid. (I should point out that that wouldn't have been when they were released, just school holiday re-screens!)

I am told that the first I saw was Thunderbird 6 though I have no memory of watching at the cinema (I have subsequently watched the film on TV) My earliest cinema trip which I do remember was probably Dumbo -Disney did a lot of reruns of movies (though i also saw Bedknobs and Broomsticks and the Aristocats and am not certain which I saw first)

I think it might have been Finding Nemo for me - that or some other Disney/Pixar movie. I remember I saw Finding Nemo, though. I definitely also recall being left behind at my grandma's while my mom and dad went out to see one of the Lord of the Rings movies when I was about six or seven, and that I was extremely determined to see those movies for myself because of that. I also recall having several nightmares about Gollum spying on me after seeing the scene in Moria from the first film. It's probably no coincidence those movies are among my favorites.

So many films here that I have seen at the cinema. Eye of the Tiger, Star Wars, View to a Kill ( plus The Spy Who Loved Me), Superman 1, but the only Disney I can still remember is One of our Dinosaurs is Missing.
Not the first cinema experience, but the earliest I can remember, for obvious reasons, retaining significant memories, was a Double bill of the 60's Dalek films around 1974. I remember the Daleks, seeing them for the first time, and, vaguely, through recalled memories watching the films later on, Roy Castle, plus the petrified fores and city but fell asleep at some point. My clearest and only definitive memory, however, was awaking when the resistance attacked the Dalek craft, in Robomen suits, and asking my brother which one was the Doctor, as he had the Robomen outfit on too, so they all looked the same to me. I found it confusing, with it not being the TV Doctor. Apparently Pertwee was still the Doctor at the time, from discussing with my brother as a teenager. Nowadays I am the only one in the family who actually remembers seeing it. So, yeah, I saw them on the big screen and slept though most of them...

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

Like Digi, my first movie that I remember seeing was a rerelease of Peter Pan - my parents told me that I was in love with Tinkerbell for months after that and took great glee in reminding me that I talked about "the big TV" for ages. That would've been about 1973-4.
I'm starting to feel old reading the comments in this thread: a lot of the films some of you are mentioning as your firsts are films I've taken my own kids to!

I think, embarrasingly it might have been kung fu panda or monsters vs aliens (just to make everybody feel even older)...hardly class examples of cinema especially when i asked for years before i was allowed to go

The first movie I saw in a movie theatre was the 1950s Disney animation of Cinderella. I saw it when I was about 5. (And, no, I didn't see it when it first came out. I'm old but I'm not that old. I wasn't even born when it first came out. ) I remember it distinctly cause my mom, my sister and I took the train into New York City to see it, and went out to eat afterwards, so it was a special treat.

This is one of those memories that's so old that all I'm left with is reconstructions based on all the times I've told the story, but my earliest specific memory of any kind is seeing Star Wars (back in the days before A New Hope was added to it) with my parents at a drive-in theater.

Either Empire Strikes Back or Superman II, both were 1980. I couldn't stay awake for Empire (I was 3) and had to be taken home by my Dad so for years I never knew how it ended until it was on TV.
My dad must have been very gracious, if one of my children stopped me seeing the end of a film I liked they would never hear the end of it, but he has never complained to me once
