Especially because, at the time, didn't the artist draw the images for the story before the *dialogue* was even written? I don't think so. & it depends on how much fuodsgui is given in the script to the artist. Either way I think artists are not given as much credit in the creative process of comics especially when they are transferred to another mwdium. It is usually the writer that is seen as sole creator . I read a lot of comics and the artists, including the penciller, inker etc, deserve just as much credit considering how much of the finished product is their handiwork. Even in Doctor Who Magazine circles I quite like the art style of Adrian Salmon, just not in large doses. Style can be just a big a reminder of storylines as the scripts. The art can make or break an issue or installment, or elevate a great storyline into a phenomenal storyline. Sometimes there are touches that only an artist can put in, like characters who appear in crowd scenes or just how something looks visually. Time of My Life from DWM, the final Donna one, is simply heartwarming and heartbreaking because of the art. As far as characters and IP go, who owns the rights depends on the policies of the publisher and the writers. Every issue Superman appears in credits Jerry Siegal and Joe Shuster, the original writer and artist of the character, for the character of Superman.

I loved his Bernice Summerfield Big Finish CD covers, when he done them. I thought they were very stylish.

In relation to these comic strip adaptations ( The Iron Legion & Star Beast) Pat Mills and Dave Gibbons sold all their rights to Pannini. So Big Finish wouldn't have been dealing with Pat Mills/Dave Gibbons. Which probably means they won't receive any royalties from these releases either. (They get no royalties for any print editions.)

True. As an aside rights issues for British comic book creators is still a contentious issue.

Every issue Superman appears in credits Jerry Siegal and Joe Shuster, the original writer and artist of the character, for the character of Superman. But they also give credit to the artist because he was who created the character's iconic look. In this case, the Doctor was a pre-existing character. They should, indeed, credit him as co-creator of Sharon, for example. But even if they do, I don't think this will be on the cover (unless it's a "based on the original works of/comic strips by Pat Mills and Dave Gibbons" kinda credit on the boxset cover), but inside the booklet/back cover, just as directors or producers aren't either on a standard Doctor Who Big Finish release. It'll probably just be "(Doctor Who and) the Iron Legion/Star Beast by Pat Mills adapted by Alan Barnes", like on the novel adaptations.

(This according to The Gallifrey Times website) A news reporter appears in The Star Beast modelled after her. I imagine this is what they are talking about rather than confirming she will appear in the audio adaptation . She also turned up in another Pat Mills related comic book, Invasion.

I'm surprised Dez never tried to do it, or maybe the idea was thrown around the offices of Marvel UK once. It certainly would have been fun if they could have got the rights to do it though.

For anyone wondering whether or not these will do well in comparsion to the Novel Adapations, Star Beast has a VERY nice development for fans that will become apparent in the trailer. Beep the Meep is also just such a distinct character that I can't imagine fans aren't going to be the least bit intrigued, either. The tone of the stories are very unique and different, still very Who, but very much their own era. (Closer in some respects then the New Adventures)

I really want the cover to be like the cover for a graphic novel. It wouldn't be right otherwise. In the vein of the 'comics brought to life', etc?

Alan Barnes is a HUGE comic book nerd and worked at 2000 AD for a time. I can't imagine he hasn't tried to get in contact with Pat Mills about the adapations and there won't be significant discussion and celeberation on his and Dave Gibbon's legacy on Who.

(Closer in some respects then the New Adventures) If Big Finish ever adapt the Eighth Doctor comic strips, TV Action! has an utterly brilliant hook. For comic storylines with more interesting styles or concepts, Where Nobody Knows Your Name and The Land of Happy Endings are promising.
An interesting experiment, in a possible collaboration with Titan Comics, might be something that Big Finish has done in the past with Doctor Who Magazine, producing free promotional stories that feature the characters from the pages of the DWM comic strip (Beep in The Ratings War, Shayde in No Place Like Home) or serve some other promotional purpose (Cuddlesome in relation to Time Crash featuring the Fifth Doctor). Doing a half hour prequel or side-story to an issue or storyline in Titan Comics could be a way of cross-marketing, bringing readers to Big Finish and listeners to Titan. There's already some promotional partnership, as Big Finish is regularly advertised in Titan's Doctor Who and Torchwood issues, and at one point Big Finish audios were incentives to subscribe. Titan have just done a three issue mini-series with the Seventh Doctor, Ace and the Counter-Measures team.

I regret the use of the word 'hook'. Edited it now for 'development'. Trust me, if you haven't read the Fourth Comics strip and your a Fourth Doctor fan, your going to be VERY pleased with Star Beast and delighted Big Finish adapted it. I don't think we'll be seeing Gabby anytime soon at Big Finish, more the pity. I think the logistics of casting are probably a bit beyond Big Finish at present. Alice is a strong possibility, but I'd imagine they'd rather have Matt Smith with the actress when the time comes. I love that Titan gives Big Finish plenty of love (and there's clearly a lot of love at Big Finish, with Cavan Scott, George Mann and Richard Dinnick all have written for Titan), but I think things currently are the way they are that Big Finish kind of have to consider a wider audience who might not neccessairly have read the comics for the time being and their current output. I'm not saying never say never, but there's a HUGE difference between the early years of Big Finish and where they are now and I don't know if they could even find the time to do such releases now, regardless of the mutual love from both companies. I wouldn't imagine it'd pop up with some regularity, at the very least.

There's a lot of possibilities to explore if this takes off. If all goes well, Five fans still looking to see him solo with an original companion could get them in the form of Sir Justin for The Stockbridge Horror or Gus, an American fighter pilot, from later stories.

I can't imagine it won't. It's more typical Who and the comics are less divisive then the NAs were.

I'd love a boxset of Tides/Stars/Horror, as long as they could get Mark Williams back to play Max! Same with Jemima Rooper and Robert Jezek for Izzy and the Bird

Yeah, it's wonderful that so much of this stuff has already been prepped in one way or another (even having someone for Shayde). I'm really hoping that they're able to get to Wormwood with Nick Briggs's Doctor at some point, he's one of my favourite off-main incarnations. Fingers crossed for good things.
