'Not a fan of the Paternoster Gang'.
Actually that sounds less contrived as a sentence than they were as a concept. I am surprised they are so popular on this forum, given the flak they have had in general.
I suppose, if you replaced Madame Vastra with a 'Doctor Who & The Silurians' era flippers, snout, and squeaky voiced version, alongside human sidekick and Strax the accident prone Sontaran, you could have a spin on early Rentaghost, as they look for gainful employment whilst trying to look incognito in Victorian London. I can visualise them walking in broad daylight through Waterloo Station as a trio. That would indeed be an interesting re-interpretation.

There's a couple of mentions of Vastra working for Jago, one in a Brilliant Book, one in a Titan Comic... so:
(Assuming they can't get any New Series Doctors:) 1. Madame Vastra origin story with the Seventh Doctor. 2. Vastra is working for Jago (pre-Talons) while the Eighth Doctor saves Jenny's life. 3. Strax origin story with an earlier Doctor, possibly the Fourth or Sixth. Someone that can carry a story with a comedic undertone. 4. The Paternoster Gang in one of their first adventures with Strax. There's no Doctor, but maybe River or someone is involved.*
(Alternately, in a perfect world, #4 is set right before the Snowmen and includes Matt Smith.)
*Actually, River knew the Paternosters pretty well in The Name of the Doctor - I wouldn't be too shocked if a future Diary box set was where the trio were officially introduced to BF.
