Talking about special effects. I think for the most part they do just fine. I was watching and thinking just that, and then I got to the episode with the little tiny telepathic guy with the big head in the tank. BWAH HA HA HA HA HA!
I just couldn't stop laughing every time he was on the screen.

I just started season 2 episode 1. They've got a shiny new model of the Liberator! And the costumes are more elaborate.

I'm on Season 2, episode 8. I LOVED Travis in the first season. A real Ahab type of character. Ruthless, psychotic, and a match for Servalan. So far I have found the new Travis of season 2 to be whiney, with all the things that made him interesting removed. I hear he gets better. I hope so. Oh my goodness, it's Tobias Vaughn!

For all Travis 1's brilliance, I really enjoyed Brian Croucher's take on the character. There's no doubting, however, that he seemed to lose interest in Travis as his stories went on (comparing his later performances to his earlier ones is very telling). But he had a good, brooding presence, looked great, and his relationship with the Federation was, I think, fascinating.
{Spoiler} His demise in Star One was just one of many times he appeared to die and in fact didn't. I spent a lot of Series 3 hoping he'd make a return (I still wish BF would bring him back, even if only for a more noble finale).
Croucher and regular director George Spenton-Foster were often at loggerheads, I understand. This may explain why Travis 2 wasn't given much encouragement to make a big impression.

Grief is probably the better actor but, due to the scripts he was given, his Travis is very one-dimensional - the only exception being the scene in Deliverance when he regrets the loss of Maryatt.
Croucher gets much better scripts and character development (some of the time) and as a result his Travis is the more interesting character of the 2.
Maybe BF could do a Travis regeneration story?

Both Grief and Croucher (blimey, sounds like a firm of solicitors) seem to be happy to work for Big Finish, so such a thing is possible. With all the imagination they have, I'm sure the BF writers could create a story that explains the differences between the two Travises - and I for one would love that!

He didn't? I don't remember that. I thought he did. I didn't phrase that very well, did I? I meant, on previous occasions he appeared to die and didn't - it appears that Star One was his last curtain call after all, but it was a situation he could have escaped from, as he had escaped from previous possible fatalities.

Onto Season 3, epsiode 1 ( I listened to Warship in between this and the last episode) Hal Melonby. The grooviest weapons developer ever! Darrow shines in this. I LOVE his scenes with Servalan. Dana is a very good addition. It was nice seeing Richard Franklin at the start of this one. I love finding the Doctor Who easter eggs in this series.

Jacqueline Pearce becomes the sci-fi villainess for me after... {Spoiler}...her final scene with Mellanby:
It's my Shazam as a writer whenever I want to do a convincing villain. It and another bit of goodness coming up later in the season.

Warship was great, but it did take away from the final scene between Avon and Blake in Star One where Blake's last words to Avon are that he had always trusted him right from the beginning. I thought that was a great note to (temporarily) end their relationship on and made the events of the final episode all the more poignant. With the two interacting in Warship, it means that is no longer the farewell scene.

It may be controversial, because it is quite a terrible episode, but I love Croucher's performance in Hostage: Travis gets some depth and nuance and is able to show some range as an actor in a way that he very rarely does in other episodes.

Yes! I love it too - I actually quite like the episode as a whole as well - Servalan's promise to Travis that ...
{Spoiler} ... if he leads her to Blake, she'll have him officially listed as dead ("There's no-one as free as a dead man.") really underlines Travis's fascinating new persona as an outcast. This defines Croucher's Travis for me - a loner, working for no-one, but ultimately reaching the end of his game. Terrific stuff!

Ok folks, I had never heard of Blake's 7 until I discovered BF. The range was always from that show I never saw and knew nothing about. As the years have gone by I figured that I would get to it eventually. Eventually is now, and God is it good!! I'm 8 episodes into the first season, and I can't believe how before it's time it was. It took so many risks. It's title character being convicted of child molestation. A female pilot. A main character who is neither good nor bad, but way too 3 dimensional and nuanced for either of those labels. I mean, Avon actually punches a woman in the face! There are so many instances that I have seen already that make this show stand out. Terry Nation really was a genius. I mean, he liked things extremely grim, but boy was he good. I think many later shows were influenced by this one. And one of them that keeps popping up in my head is Firefly, of course without the western influences. But the outlaws trying to evade the evil central authority. Sure there's much about the shows that are different, but I keep coming back to that one. Any one else agree with me? How did this not make a splash over here in the US? Why is this not THE cult 1970's show that everyone talks about? So now I have to get back to my Blake binging. After I get done with the series I think I will end up giving BF even more of my money! Thank you charlesuirdhein for getting me started with these. You are very welcome 😁

Ok, as I approach the end of Series 3 I thought I would share some thoughts with you all.
How is it possible that this show keeps getting better with each series? How many shows can say they get better AFTER the main character leaves? (I can think of only one off hand. NYPD Blue.)
Avon: What a well rounded character played by an altogether amazing actor. I loved him from the beginning, but the Series 3, Episode 8 (Rumors of Death) happened. Wow.
I believe until Anna, Avon had a little more faith in people. I think he honestly doesn't want to get close to anyone because of what happened to him. He relies on his intelligence and his self-interest and ability to protect himself cannot be denied. But his strong sense of loyalty to those around him betrays his humanity, and he probably sees that as his only weakness. Especially when it comes to Anna and how much he was hurt by those events over and over again. In a couple of these episodes I have a had the sense that the creators of this series are trying to thrust him into a relationship with Cally, which I think would be a huge mistake. I'm waiting to see if I'm right or not.
Vila: The complete opposite of Avon. This is a man who believes his intelligence is a hindrance. While Avon, also a thief, attempted to steal something huge to show off his intelligence, Vila is a more successful thief by hiding it. Living amongst thieves in an oppressive society, the less intelligent you seem the less the Federation will make an example of you. We know he's probably the best at what he does, but acting the fool is what has kept him alive.
I miss Jenna, but not so much Blake. I wonder what that says about his behavior in Series 2 for me?
Dayna: I liked her better when we first meet her. All raring to get herself involved and up to her neck in whatever is going on,and not really understanding why she shouldn't kill her enemies. I still like her. Wish they would use her more. She developed amazing weapons, but we only get a glimpse of that side of her since she came aboard the Liberator. I'm waiting to see her really shine in these.
Tarrant: Annoying, stuck up child. Although I think we see him learn that he needs to take a more circumspect approach to the situations he finds himself in. The jury's still out for me on this guy. Waiting to see how he develops.
Series 3 has some really odd episodes. It seems the creators feel confident enough to experiment a little and it makes for some interesting scenes. The big brain in Ultraworld brought to mind Planet Of the Odd. But then again, my brain seems to be hard wired to see Doctor Who references everywhere. This, though, made me wonder if Keith Temple was thinking about Blakes Seven when he wrote that episode. Moloch was just silly (See my above comment). It was another "Little guy with the big head" moment. But Darrow makes it all just so damn believable!
