This series marks the end of Clara's time in the TARDIS and the tale of the madman and his box begins anew next year.... But who will The Doctor's new companion and closest friend be? What will they be like? How will they differ from Clara Oswald and her preddesscors? (Please no spoiler/rumour talk in this thread. Thanks

I'd like to see a single male companion next, or at least a full-time male companion with no pre-existing or romantic relationship with the female companion. Preferably an alien, and definitely not a 20-something from contemporary UK. Even a companion from another country/culture would be great, to expand the potential characterisation.

Much as I'd like to see an all-male TARDIS-team, it's not going to happen. Viewer identification is the linchpin that keeps the primary companions young and female. The only way to get a primary male companion is to get a female Doctor.
There are, as I see it, two probable routes for the next leading lady: contrast or gimmickry.
If the former is chosen, we'll get a subdued, uncertain, awkward, and eccentric young lady. As for the latter, we've already had the soon-to-be-married companion, obsessed with the Doctor and missing great chunks of her life, as well as the mysterious one who keeps dying. So what else could be done? River, though not a companion, was trying to kill the Doctor, so that might take that choice out of the running. How about the young lady who doesn't know who she is? Or someone ideologically at odds with the Doctor, ala Roz and Klein? Or the Doctor's equal, ala Romana? Heck, how about Romana as the next companion?

I wouldn't say Amy was obbessed with The Doctor - more he was a bright gleam in a dark time her in life that she understandably never could let go of. Aunt Sharon, although she tried, clearly didn't really cope with Amy wand wasn't cut out to be a parent and she was reeling from her the disapperance of her parents, it's understandable that she would latch onto The Doctor and that moment of happiness and promise of sweeter tommorows, particularly when she was invalidated about it and already had trouble and she would hold onto him into adulthood. I do like the idea of an insecure companion who The Doctor helps to grow and become more confident in herself (and an intresting task for Twelve) - and it's been six years since Donna, so there has been enough time to do a similar story with different beats. Ideologically at odds would be intresting, but they would probably be an additional companion, since the companion is very much meant to be the audience identification figure. Having a companion ot knowing who she is does kind of run close to the mystery of Clara Oswald back in 2013, however (in a few years, who knows?).

I remember ages ago on the old forum, this question was brought up in relation to new Big Finish companions and someone quite wisely pointed out that sci-fi is a genre domianted by male characters and that having a female companion as the standard was a refreshing change. I wouldn't mind another male companion in the mix, but only if this tradition continues..... I do love the idea of the series opening up to different countries and companions for future companions, as well, which would be a very intresting change.

I would love for them to do multiple companions next go, either 2 girls from diverse backgrounds like 1 earthly girl and one from another planet/future or even a new galifreyan girl companion if they bring them back. The other option a guy/girl with maybe an earthly guy thrown in and then an alien girl

I'd like to see an American companion. Preferably one with a more convincing accent than Peri.

The Welsh and Irish have been hugely under-represented in terms of main cast. It's been pretty much 50/50 with Scots and English. Would be nice for the other Celtic nations to see someone like them on screen.

So long as it's not ANOTHER girl from modern times, I think I'll be fine with whatever Mr. Moffat chooses to do. I also hope we get another companion as well, but not a companion romantically involved with the other companion, otherwise it might feel like a retread of Amy and Rory.

Wasn't the Victorian Clara the intended companion, before the Beeb vetoed her in favor of a modern-iteration?

Gaiman said he had been writing Nightmare in Silver for Victorian Clara before he was asked to change it

I'd like a 30ish male companion.
Who can play bass.
Failing that, a 40ish female companion.
Who can play bass.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.
