More details on the sixth series of The Diary of River Song can be revealed today. The final episode of four in the sixth series is a true celebration of Doctor Who. One could say it’s a carnival... a carnival… of monsters!
Didn't see that one coming ... Not complaining, mind you!
No mention of any original cast but I think most of them are sadly dead except Shirna and possibly Claire Daly

Not sure if I’m being daft, or if it’s a poorly written article. It talks about the final story being a carnival of monsters, but the article then goes on about the third story, which is set during Carnival of Monsters! What’s the actual final story then?
I’m guessing the hints at the Third Doctor and Jo means they’ll both appear, probably as cameos.

I took it the carnival of monsters story is the final one on the boxset (episode 4) but episode 3 will be the final story to be announced.
So there are 2 final stories depending on what you mean by final
(And since we know River Song's ultimate fate from the TV show, arguably nothing in this boxset will be a "final" story)

Ah it so just reads as a badly structed article, ironic as it mentions Press Gang LOL!
EDIT
They've also called it the 4th on the Tweet and FB Post announcing it

It doesn’t help they said the Weng-Chiang story is the final one in Volume 6 in the article about 6&7 being announced!
So, to recap, we know there’s stories based during or before The Web of Fear, Carnival of Monsters and The Talons of Weng-Chiang. The remaining story is to be announced, and I’m guessing all this talk of “a carnival of monsters” is actually referring to the episode linked to Carnival of Monsters.
I can’t say the thought of River vs Ogrons, Sontarans and Drashigs excites me. I could understand the Web of Fear and Talons of Weng-Chiang because they’re very popular and famous Doctor Who stories. Carnival of Monsters? Not so much, though I love the story.
I’m guessing the unannounced story will be a First Doctor one. An Unearthly Child with Susan?

My guess is that they're setting it between An Unearthly Child and Remembrance of the Daleks.

Carnival is my favourite 3rd Doctor story, probably! I think it’s widely popular.

Like I say, I love it too.
It came 64th in the Doctor Who Magazine 50 years poll back in 2014. I think “widely popular” is hyperbole, particularly when it’s alongside The Web of Fear and The Talons of Weng-Chiang.

Perhaps, but 64 is still pretty high, given the amount of stories it’s up against. And how many 3rd Doctor stories are above it?

Yet The Web of Fear is the highest Second Doctor story and Talons of Weng-Chiang is the second highest Fourth Doctor story. I appreciate that I’m being pedantic and the advertising of “some of the most popular Doctor Who stories of all time” is just a bit of marketing and not deadly accurate.

Sea Devils
Terror of the Autons
The Time Warrior
The 3 Doctors
The Silurians
The Daemons
The Green Death
Spearhead From Space
Inferno
Still life would be dull if we all thought the same classics were classics Battlefield anyone?

So it is ranked 10 out of 24, that would make it just above average for a Pertwee story.
Funny, I always thought it was better than that ...

Battlefield? Love it! And I know we both agree on The Monster of Peladon Now, if only I could find someone else to support Warriors of the Deep with me... ----- General thread contribution: I'm really happy we're getting a Carnival of Monsters story, it's one of my all-time favourites (among the very first stories I ever saw, so I'm naturally going to have a soft spot for it). If we're guessing at Hartnell stories for the final (meaning 'last in the set') episode, I'd imagine The Dalek Invasion of Earth would be an obviously strong contender, though I personally think The Aztecs would be fantastic (but that story already has a very strong female-led plot, so I don't really think we need River stealing Barbara's thunder... although, if she were to pretend to be the NEXT incarnation of Yetaxa, there might very well be a good story there...).

The rest is brilliant because it's terrible Just the way I like it (But that doesn't mean I like Hell Bent, far from it... )

Carnival good! But (for me) crossing paths with a recast Doctor not-so-good... Not sure if it's enough to put me off, I do enjoy these River sets.
