So do we know anything about Series 7? I know they've started recording and its a very long shot, I'm just very curious as to what the err....'gimmick' of this set is. And excited, I genuinenly love the Diary range, probs my favourite spin-off at Big Finish. When I read the original press release Alex Kingston is set to reprise her stellar role as the Doctor's wife, River Song, in two more audio series of The Diary of River Song from Big Finish Productions - with River going back in time to clean up her husband's timeline...
I thought that we would get eight stories set around stories from all eight of the Doctors. So until I hear differently I keep thinking about what stories from 5, 6, 7 & 8 we will get. And whether they will limit themselves to classic TV stories to weave her adventures around or set them around their own audio classics...the later would be a great way to continue the anniversary celebrations of Big Finish. Yeah, that is how I understood it, too.

If that's the case, my thoughts are that they'll stick to TV stories for 5, 6 and 7: maybe River on Androzani Major, something involving Varos (perhaps with Sil?) and the Greatest Show sequel that's been mentioned (although I'd probably rather see her interact with The Curse of Fenric or Ghost Light). Unless the TV Movie rights have cleared up, we won't be seeing her meet Grace Holloway, so it's likely either an audio story (River & Orson Welles? River versus the Cybermen on Red Rocket Rising? River in 23rd century Venice?) or... there's nothing saying this is an Eighth Doctor story, so... River meets Jack Harkness before the events of The Empty Child.

Just some random thoughts on a Sunday afternoon...
Fifth Doctor - Spare Parts The story is a classic, so came to mind if River is visiting Big Finish stories. It depends if they can weave a story around it for Professor Song?
Sixth Doctor - The Condemned Mainly I want to hear Charley’s reaction to finding out that River is the Doctor’s wife. Plus more DI Menzies, even though she and Charley were in The Legacy of Time, is needed.
Seventh Doctor - Colditz I don’t have a story in mind, just the fan boy desire to hear River face off against Nazi Klein.
As an a side thought, which could be a Sixth or Seventh Doctor story - River Song battles Nimrod & The Forge
As another side thought could River spend sometime with Howard Carter after the events of False Gods? Being an archaeologist surely she has to meet the most famous real archaeologist of them all!
Eighth Doctor - Lucie Miller or Dark Eyes I wonder if there is a story set in the aftermath of Lucie Miller, with River meeting and helping to console the older Susan. Or in a lighter spirit River could have a rip roaring adventure with Molly O’Sullivan from Dark Eyes.

Imagine if of all roles Big Finish got Benedict Cumberbatch in, it isn't Sherlock or The Seven or The Corsair or anything superbly interesting for what he would cost to hire, its just to reprise his role from a half-hour short story released over a decade ago.

Sorry it’s been an age since I listened to it. I confess I had to look up the story’s title. I should have gone a stage further and checked who played the character. But get Barnaby Edwards back on to casting and you never know!

This was a route I was hoping Big Finish wouldn't go down when it comes to River. The character is too big and the actress far too talented to just have gimmicky adventures like this full of fanjodrelly moments and nostalgia overload. Whilst River is connected to the Doctor in a massive and mysterious way she is also very much her own woman and I think that at least one or two boxes set just in her own world with unique strands hanging from it would be most welcome. If Benny can do it surely River can!
That said I am looking forward to this a lot. Alex is amongst those rare talents who could get away with reading the phone book and still be enthralling.

But surely the problem is that Benny can't do it (anymore). That's why they had to start bringing in Drs, first Seven and then Warner, into the New Adventures boxsets. Especially in boxsets 1 & 2 where they had the Dr, Ace, Daleks, a Davros cameo and then Sutekh - it looked very much like they were pulling out all the stops to try and boost sales. That obviously worked well enough, so they have been able to backpedal a little and use the Warner Dr rather than a TV Dr but it appears Benny is still no longer deemed popular enough to fly solo without a Dr

I love Benny.
And it is doubly sad that for things to sell, everything needs to be gimmicky these days, or at least have some kind of gimmick in there. However, I am a pretty big fan of the Benny/ Warner Doctor team and thought getting these two together was a stroke of genius.

I have the feeling that in New Benny Vol 5 back in our/her universe, the Doctor will be Benny's companion rather than the other way round. And they are terrific together so I hope for many more sets from them both! In 'The Story So Far', Benny was solo in 4/6 stories (5, if you don't count the Valeyard - now there's a can of worms ) and the Warner Doctor story was very Doctor-lite (and incredibly powerful, be warned everyone if you've not heard it yet.) Maybe this was only because they were 20th anniversary volumes though?

I agree with the stroke of genius that is Warner and Bowerman absolutely clicks and ticks all my boxes. Yes and Alex could definitely have her own stand alone unconnected adventures and No reason they cannot reinvigorate stand alone Bennie adventures without any crossovers . But sales are sales and Big Finish have to have sales to continue as long as the writings smart and the audio acting as high range as it is i will continue to enjoy.

For that, I would most be definitely be happy waiting another set or two to see River having adventures in her own right, although that is something I very much want to see as much as anything else. (This is especially so if "Other" happens to be a certain adorable Auntie and her indispensable companion. That would be four or five dreams come true in one box set).

Yes. I agree. I have given up on this range now. It's basically just fanfic. Granted, isn't all Big Finish fanfic? I'm not sure if I think that's fair to say, but I'm probably biased toward taking that the wrong way because I think I'm used to most often hearing that from people who seem dismissive of Big Finish or even almost determined not to enjoy Big Finish's output. I guess I think of fanfic more as where the emphasis might be more on crowd-pleasing than anything else, like if I were writing it I might be tempted to think "Well who cares if it isn't the greatest story, it's got characters x, y and z in it" whereas I think Big Finish consistently show a strong standard of professionalism in being determined to offer good stories as well as fan pleasers. I do rail a bit myself at the idea of "gimmicks" or fan pleasing just for the sake of it, but I really don't see what's wrong with it when they do such a good job with the stories.
