It is difficult to see who could be reading that Twelfth Doctor story apart from one of his actual companions, if not Peter himself. Hmm. I suspect the Eleventh Doctor one will be someone like one of the Paternosters though. Well, I have all of the 12th Doctor audiobooks read by Dan Starkey. He is doing an absolute amazing job on those. I think my favorite is "Silhouette" where he absolutely goes to town with Strax and the 12th Doctor. So I definitely would not mind him doing these, even if he is not a "real" companion in that sense. A nice treat was having Nicola Bryant doing Death Among The Stars last year. Not just because she's a rare BF commodity these days and a great reader anyway but hearing her do a 12th Doctor story was a real novelty.

Would you guys prefer an era specific cast member or a more general reader? For example, a Twelfth Doctor solo story featuring none of his companions; Ingrid Oliver or Nicholas Briggs? My preference would be doing stories featuring the person you’re actually getting to read. For example, a Twelfth Doctor story featuring Osgood, read by Ingrid Oliver. But to actually answer the question I put forward. I think getting an era specific cast member actually shows some effort has even put in, at least, so I suppose that would be my preference out of the two. I'd prefer the same as you but with dealing with so many actors at the peak of their careers, and New Who actors generally having bigger careers than classic series ones it may not be as viable an option going forward. Jake Dudman is gonna be busy in the next decade or so at BF.

But, at the same time if there’s a solo Twelfth Doctor Story, I’d rather it be read by either Capaldi himself or an actor from his era like Ingrid Oliver or Matt Lucas. It just feels more personal if the reader has some link to the era of the story they’re reading.

It just feels more personal if the reader has some link to the era of the story they’re reading. I completely agree with this and will also go a step further: if it's not read by an actor from the respective TV era (or established BF era, like Charley or Lucie Short Trips), I'm just not interested in it at all. I've skipped buying most of the Short Trips Rarities for this exact reason. I have no beef with those readers and am sure they're very good at what they do (BF wouldn't hire them back if they weren't, after all), but without a character who 'was there' telling the story, I just can't invest myself in the story. I won't be buying for now, but the idea of 2005- stories is still very intriguing so I'll be keeping an eye on this for casting information. If they end up being read by era-specific cast members, I'm in, no further questions required!

I think there’s a difference between era specific cast members doing a reading and an actual cast member of the story doing a reading. I’d argue the Short Trips are sold on the basis of the latter, and not the former. Certainly since they turned to monthly, download only releases. I think that’s why they’ve also avoided solo Doctor stories so far.
The announcement made today has given us not only solo Doctor stories, but also stories from Doctors that have yet to reprise their roles for Big Finish and don’t have companions who are regularly working for them.
The Paul Spragg and subscriber Short Trips are completely different kettles of fish.

I'm in two minds about the New Series STs - I'm excited to have more stories featuring the new Doctors, but like it's been mentioned, none of their companions are regularly working at Big Finish, and I'd prefer them to do the readings over someone who isn't connected to those Doctors/their eras.

The synopsis for "The Mistpuddle Murders" makes no mention of Nyssa and Tegan.

That’s true, but it doesn't change the difference between era specific cast members doing a reading and an actual cast member of the story doing a reading. They wouldn’t get Billie Piper or Catherine Tate in to do a solo Ninth or Tenth Doctor Short Trip. They don’t work with Big Finish often enough to get them to read stories where their characters don’t appear. If Sarah Sutton does read The Mistpuddle Murders and Nyssa isn’t in it, then that would be a unique example in the range. It could very well pave the way for future Short Trips, which would maybe give us an early indication of what they’re planning for these Ninth and Twelfth Doctor adventures. I just hope that Big Finish carry on with the unique opportunities the Short Trips range provides. Different framing devices, stories read by unusual characters; the Master, the Monk and Narvin. I’d hate to see those abandoned in favour of a traditional audiobook reading by someone who’s not even connected to the story.

It seems I might be the crazy one, but I'm interested in the stories, not the actors, specially if it's a reading and not a drama. In the past I wasn't very keen on non full-cast releases, but since trying a few of the STs and CCs, I don't mind it anymore. As long as it's not read by some untalented rando, I don't care who reads it. Same goes for the recasts and "recasts" (Doctor Chronicles narrators).

I think you misunderstood my point; we know The Mistpuddle Murders is a Five/Nyssa/Tegan story, but it just happens the synopsis only mentions the Doctor. All the Short Trips feature the character the reader is better known for, and I see no reason to assume the new series ones will be any different.

I hope you’re right and we do get, say, Billie Piper reading a Nine & Rose story, or Pearl Mackie reading an outing for Bill, Nardole & Twelve. I remain sceptical, however, which is why I originally asked if people would prefer a reading by a cast member connected to the era (e.g. Ingrid Oliver), or someone more generic (e.g. Nicholas Briggs).

Yes, the subscriber short trips haven't been any the worse for "only" being read by Stephen Critchlow who has done a lovely job the past 4 years or so. I don't think any of them even before that have been read by companions at all, could be wrong.

While, as mentioned, we know that Nyssa and Tegan are in that one, it actually wouldn't be unique. The very first monthly Short Trip is a First Doctor story where he is traveling with Susan, Ian and Barbara (although they don't appear) - and it's read by Peter Purves. But really Peter is there to be the Doctor. It's more like how Treloar read a couple of them. It's not quite the same as, say, Camille Coduri reading a Ninth Doctor story without Jackie in it. Agreed. This announcement sounds very Doctor-focused. I expect that they know how well the current run of Short Trips have been received, though. Hopefully the pattern will continue.

The second story is under the new series banner and has the description of a “Scottish man” in the bio Could this be a twelfth Doctor story by any chance?? Yup, it's the second story. (I don't know why they've got Lizbeth Myers listed on both the news story and the release page - either it's a double typo or she's changed her name...)

Aha - so that answers the Twelfth Doctor narrator question.. another Scot! "In February there’s a Twelfth Doctor (a first for Big Finish) historical tale that sees him meeting a female pioneer of literature. The Astrea Conspiracy has been written by Lizbeth Myles with narration by Neve McKintosh who plays Madame Vastra." Does that mean she plays Vastra in the story though? The blurb for THE ASTREA CONSPIRACY doesn't say either way but given the era (mid-17th Century), I'm guessing not.. unless there's a TARDIS trip involved for her.
