This was a great episode, but i agree the ending was rushed. Thats really my only complaint about it. The reveals worked well, everyone shined (Especially Alan Cummings as King James).
This series has the most classic vibes of most of NuWho. This and Kerblam i could easily picture as Classic Serials and where some cliffhangers would be

Really looking forward to watching this! Trailer and pictures look amazing and I like what I read in the reviews on here. It finally turned up in my iTunes today (yay!!), but won't be able to get to watch this before tomorrow evening, since tonight I will go for dinner and cinema (Crimes of Grindelwald) with some friends.

I thought it was okay. My big problem with the episode was them going the route of the main accuser being the person who brought the hardships that were "evidence" of witchcraft down on them in the first place. It definitely made her the absolute evil of the piece. I also was surprised that even with black stuff coming out of her eyes while The Doctor was in the ducking stool, no one even questioned her actions. And then even with all the evil she and the Morax were doing, the Doctor gives King James a small rebuff when he delivers the final blow to her. At least he had a fun rejoinder on that.

I think there is something about the filming of this episode in Gosport on South Today with Sally Taylor a bit later this evening around 6.30.

Over on reddit, some are complaining why didn't they show the TARDIS land in the opening.
Why exactly do we need that? Does the old writing maxim of 'start late, get out early' not mean anything to some people?

Anyway, my weekly jab at reddit aside, let's talk James:
Part of me would've loved to see more the 'fire and brimstone' take on James ala Robert Carlyle in Gunpowder, Treason and Plot, which Alan could've likely knocked out of the park too. However, there's certainly a historical argument to make that James could also be lighter than his austere portraits lead one to believe, and here he does encapsulate the 'cavalier' archetype that his dynasty spawned and his grandson Charlie II really went to town with. Maybe not a fop, but certainly a man of passions.
In context of the episode, the story is very much about perception and people not being what they seem. James' flamboyancy does mask his painful past and his inner religious turmoil, compounded by his liking of men. Subtextually, that's in 13's talk with him i.e. 'affairs of the heart' and not needing to hide or be afraid. Wilkinson found a way to work it in that wasn't antagonistic towards James. As much fun as the camp and bluster is, Alan really shines in this scene and cycles through a number of emotions: intrigue, grief, confusion, anger, doubt, hope, fear.

Does the old writing maxim of 'start late, get out early' not mean anything to some people? I wouldn't be too harsh on them - they're just conditioned by over a decade of examples of the show extolling "get in early, leave late" instead. Doesn't surprise me that some think this episode would be odd structure wise but if it's a dealbreaker for them they're not worth worrying about.

FWIW I don't see why we need - and have needed - to see the TARDIS landing every time, it's self evident that it landed. So if there was no problems that caused it to land that are part of the plot, then move along with the story. Either way, not a big deal.

I can't help but mention Terror of the Zygons as a good example. What it also does is open up the possibility of other stories having occurred before the Doctor and company turn up on the scene.

Yeah, but that was back in the day of 4 x 25 min episodes where padding was common and you could do that sort of thing. Modern Doctor Who episodes don't always have that time to play around, they are fast paced and often have a rushed ending, so time is at a premium. If the TARDIS landing - and the pre-landing chat within the TARDIS - is not relevant to the plot, chop it, and move along with the story.

I thought that was the point?

So wait. Were there any reactions by people who don't know anything about King James? I haven't seen anything and I need to know the bigot's reaction so I can point and laugh.

I thought that was the point? It doesn't - and it does! A charming and fairly long arrival scene was filmed, but cut because of a special effects problem with the (unusual) TARDIS effect.
However, the scene is on the DVD thanks to the Restoration Team. Go to the 'Special Features' menu and select the 'Episode 1 Director's Cut' option, then the cut scene is included when you play. It's not quite the image quality of the rest of the programme, but very nearly, and it's a lovely extra 1 3/4 minutes to spend with the Doctor, Sarah and Harry in the Highlands (of Sussex) - before the Zygons get going!

Enjoyable enough but I'm not sure that ending followed any kind of logic but the visuals sure were good. 6/10 Right I forgot to mention that.
Not only was I let down by the reveal-by-monologue aspect (rather than another 10-20m of investigation or whatever), the solution didn't get any real airtime. It reminded me of Smile - an episode I thoroughly enjoyed right up to the "oh, I'll just wave my sonic at it and fix everything" ending.
She cooked something up mainly off screen and stuck it in a stump. Boom. Solved.
I thought that was fine, but it could have done with a bit more time on screen - Becka started all the problems when she accidentally disabled the 'lock' on the aliens' prison by felling and breaking the 'tree' which was really disguised technology - the prison security system.
The Doctor got a fragment of that device from the 'tree'/ducking stool and then mended it with her sonic (that's the handwavy bit but she's the Doctor, she's very good at that sort of thing!) Then she reconnected it with the 'tree stump' and reactivated the prison security system, dragging the Morax back behind 'bars'.

Restored by Babelcolour, yeah. Schrödinger's landing. Interesting that we start with Sarah and Harry looking over the scenery, then have the Doctor rematerialise in the TARDIS dressed for the occasion. Almost with the implication that he's just nipped up the road to have a gander, metaphorically speaking. I'm really glad the DVD team decided to swoop up Stuart Humphryes, he's got a gorgeous eye for detail when it comes to colourising old clips. When I was small, I only ever saw The Mind of Evil and Planet of the Daleks in monochrome so it was a nice surprise to see them restored.
