It is a shame they’ve been reduced to two releases, as it’s a great range. I wonder if it’s a similar situation to the Companion Chronicles where some teams sell considerably more than others.
They’re also limited with the teams they can do stories with, especially if they’re not willing to use Purves & Hines on stories that don’t feature Steven & Jamie. I thought that The Curator’s Egg from last year’s Companion Chronicles might have changed that.

Yeah, I suspect that some of that creative energy is also being diverted to focus on ranges like The First Doctor Adventures. In theory, the Early Adventures could become a de facto Second Doctor Adventures series to help balance that out. I've actually been trying to figure out when was the last time we heard William Russell in a production. I think it was The Fifth Traveller in 2016, but I'm not entirely sure. I understand why we haven't heard from him in a while, given that he's now 94, but it's a funny feeling all the same.

Wasn't there a picture from a year or so ago that was on the BF feed which had Carole Ann Ford & William Russell walking into a recording studio together?

I'll have a dig around and see if I can find it. He's due to show up for a 2019 convention in Los Angeles with "Colin Baker, Pearl Mackie, [...] Frazer Hines, Richard Franklin, Katy Manning, Nicola Bryant and many, many more", which sounds like enormous fun, so he's certainly still out and about. I wonder if the picture had anything to do with The Legacy of Time?

I suspect that’s for a story for the Companion Chronicle set due this year. And a couple of lines for Legacy of Time I bet! I imagine it’s easier for William to record a one hour story with Carole, sharing the acting duties, than a longer Early Years story. You’d also require Jemma to fill in for Barbara, who’s now most notable for the separate First Doctor Adventures range.

It's a shame they are going down in number. I've really enjoyed the range so far. Elliot Chapman has been a highlight. This. It's an excellent range and I was afraid this might happen when the TV recast 1DAs started. I want to buy both ranges and I like the CCs too. If the reason is lower sales, it surely wouldn't hurt to tell us - I guess we all understand BF are a business and have to make profits.
I wish BF would say why they do things like this. For the First Doctor EAs I realise they might have "only" Steven+Vicki as a complete team (I don't think that is an 'only' situation, great Companions and actors.) But for the Second Doctor EAs they have Polly/Ben/Jamie and Jamie/Zoe so we might easily have had another full Second Doctor season as EA S6 while (unpleasant reality of Time) we can.

I'd like more in the gap BF have created between the Smugglers and the 10th Planet, with Purves as Doctor/narrator, plus Wills and Chapman.
The other issue I have with Early Adventures is why do they still need narration? I understand that at first they were concerned people weren't entirely comfortable with the idea of a recast, so narrator playing the Doctor was a fig leaf they used to get around that issue (When is a recast not a recast? When it's a narrator saying the Doctors lines). But now they have embraced recasting so wholeheartedly in the 3rd Dr Adventures, with the narration having been dropped after the 1st volume, I don't really see why they are still using narration in the EAs. Why not full cast?

Maybe to keep that fig leaf up for a while longer? I actually enjoy these narrated stories, they are a nice change of pace from the other ranges. Maybe that is what keeps them distinct?

I enjoy the narrated stories as well. They definitely have a place at BF and I wouldn't want to get rid of them. Some of my favorite stories have narration. The one that comes immediately to mind is Farewell, Great Macedon. One of the best BF stories ever. (Yes, I know it's a Lost Story.)
I have a feeling that BF is ending ranges (Survivors, Counter-Measures) and cutting back on others due to trying to manage the sheer output of what they produce. The amount of releases they have every month is astounding, and it's only going to increase with the increased production of New Series audios. They can only do so much before we start to lose quality, so while I miss a lot of these releases I completely understand.

I also like the narration - for me it's become the audio equivalent of viewing black-and-white TV separating the Third Doctor and later from the early years, just as TV Who became colour with his arrival on Earth in 1970. And all the Companion actors of the era have voices which make narration a pleasure to listen to.

It was only the third BF I bought and it was an awesome experience.
And Counter-Measures is returning in 2020, so that's good!

Yes, it is coming back, but I don't believe it's coming back as an ongoing range. Am I wrong? (I kind of hope that I am!)

Yes, it is coming back, but I don't believe it's coming back as an ongoing range. Am I wrong? (I kind of hope that I am!) I think you're right - I'm sort of hoping that 'The Hollow King' (excellent story imo) did well enough as a single-disk release to show that CM has a life beyond box sets.
Maybe the economics work better for single-disk releases and we can hope for one or two now and then? Only the 'classic' CM 1-4 sets were ever really a predictable range I think, the others have been at irregular intervals, but I get the feeling someone in BF really loves CM so perhaps the team will live on and surprise us from time to time? Sir Toby always has something up his immaculately tailored sleeves...

I touched upon this briefly last night, but they should embrace Purves & Hines as just playing the Doctor. Frazer did it for a Companion Chronicles last year. It would allow for Ben & Polly stories with each Doctor, which I’d certainly welcome, especially for the First Doctor.
I did enjoy the season long approach that Series 5 took, but I don’t think I got enough out of it to say I’d like that every year. I think I’d rather it be a mix of Doctors and teams. Mind you, it’s a moot point if they’re going to two releases a year.
I am very much looking forward to the two this year, though!

there is always he possibility of new companions. Now that BF have created a season 6B gap in The Black Hole they can set other stories there. Perhaps Jamie and the Doctor could meet Samantha Briggs again and she could travel with them for a while? Assuming of course Pauline Collins was willing and able ...

Could it also have something to do with the fact that there aren't very many companion lineups still available to them? Vicki/Steven is pretty much the only First Doctor lineup they can still use for this range, and the Second Doctor only has Ben/Jamie/Polly and Jamie/Zoe.

Considering more than half the main cast for the latest Third Doctor set were recast, I think you have enough people who don't mind. I personally thought those Third Doctor stories were excellent and wish they'd do the same for the First and Second Doctors. Why not just give them alternating Boxsets or something?
