I don't think anyone should be worried by overnights like those. All the +28s we have in have shown very positive figures with Who being the biggest hit of October on I-Player. Only a month after the show is done for the year can we really say anything about the overall results.
Since this initial overnight figure alone is nearly as high as the total +28 number for The Doctor Falls, I wouldn't be worried even slightly. Add on 2 mill or so and though this will end up lower than other eps of S11, it'll be better than a lot of New Who even Tennant and Smith era. While the final levels of success are yet to be decided, it's pretty safe to say it's not premature to proclaim this season as a a big success for the BBC, Jodie and Chibnall. How they capitalise on it and really cement the show's popularity again is the interesting part to me.

And why are we even bothering with overnight numbers? Those only tell part of the story.

Just expect youtube recommendations to be drowned in 'IT TAKES YOU AWAY RATINGS DISASTER! CHIBNALL KILLED WHO RIP!' for the next week by people lacking that paitence. Or honesty.

Its as if people are constantly worried that the show will be cancelled. & they constantly need to compare the performance of the show in relation to previous seasons.

You won't stop those types of reactionaries anyway. We've seen articles and videos attacking ratings that were literally twice what Series 10 managed. Almost like some outlets have an agenda......some are just run by complete fudds though so the idiocy is at least pure. If they were any kind of creative content creator they'd find elements in the stories, the characters, the plots, the direction to analyse and potentially criticise but that requires critical thinking and why bother with that when you can go high concept and dilute things into one sensationalist headline: "Ratings not what they were 6 weeks ago = crisis", "Chibnall to Quit says some guy on Gallifrey Base = crisis", "S12 not started filming yet = crisis" "Sonic overused, like every year apparently = crisis". "I like the cast but because they're diverse this is SJW pandering, or something = crisis".

And it is just a stupid way of looking at it. 10 years ago, yeah, sure but the way TV is consumed has changed so radically that overnights only tell part of the picture. Anyone uses overnights as proof the show is dying or hated or not popular is just being disingenuous and probably trolling people. Anyway, mini-rant over.

As I pointed out on here when the show had it's (then) worst ratings of the new Who era, during Series 9 in 2015...the BBC renewed the show for two years, it's longest recommission ever, despite the ratings slump. So if they were that bad...seems like the Beeb were happy enough to keep the show around with them in the "gutter". Eastenders gets about half the ratings it did 15 years ago - you ever read it's facing the axe? No. I've said it on here before - it's a Doctor Who thing because some fans have never gotten over 1985 and try and use the logic of the TV landscape of then to explain why the show is for the axe now when the show is many, many times more important as a brand to the BBC now than it ever was in the classic era.

So moving from a discussion about annoying fandom to a discussion about annoying fandom, several people on reddit say instead of Universe-Frog, the Conciousness should've taken on the form of Susan.
Because if you're trying to get an ancient alien to like you and stay with you, why bare yourself in a form you like, when you can potentially massively upset and offend them by wearing the mask of a dead grandchild?

If Demons of the Punjab was Who at its most heartbreaking, Kerblam! was Who at its most fun, and The Witchfinders was Who at its quintessential Who-ness, this was Who at its most weirdly wonderful. I'm really liking this back half. It's got a lot of goodwill back in my eyes.

I hope they're not writing the book on the habits of Universe-Frogs as I'm somewhat skeptical there are many authorities on the subject. Maybe they meant to say they wish that Carole Ann Ford had made a guest appearance? I do too but I wish she'd actually come back as Susan rather than coming back to play a frog.

It pointlessly went a tad far with the frog thing. I get it, I do, but it was gratuitous at that point.
Have it be a shining room or glorious view or something....just not because I like your frogs hehe
I thought it was great but.....eh... there you go. 4/5 or 5/5.... (these really need to be out of 10) ?

"Because I like frogs" was what made it endearing to me. It injected a lot of personality into something that could have been boring or underwhelming.

I’d have had the sentient universe thing appear as Jodie rather thsn as a frog, then do a little perspective msnipulation and leave it ambiguous as to whether it was the Doctor or the copy that escaped.

Apparently this monster was deleted from the episode? I wonder if this is what Ribbons was referring to when he said that turning out the latern was worse, because they never really expanded on that.

I loved the frog thing. That's part of the "no other show would do this..." greatness of the scenario. A flash of light, a postcard view...that's what other shows would do with this scenario. This was completely unafraid to have the frog even after the exploration of grief, and far from negate the seriousness, it completely complements it. It's ridiculous but it wasn't ridiculous to Grace, and the sentient Universe's understanding of her made it the most pleasing shape to take. Come to think of it "it's the most pleasing shape" is the exact reason Frobisher stays as a penguin so spinoff fans should appreciate that even more. Also don't get the "it should be Susan" thing. In the most continuity free version of the show we've had in decades...bringing Susan back? Nah. That would be more out there than any frog. When even Moffat didn't do that sort of thing and he loves the continuity refs more than anyone, anyone even considering Susan to make her second appearance in 53 years was on a hiding to nothing. And sorry Timelord, your idea of Susan's Alex being a better idea is even worse than bring Susan back. The notion they'd put in an audio only character for this story is so far away from anything this show would even consider doing I'd bet my last penny they could have brainstormed the ep for a week and not thought "Got it! The Doctor's dead grandson from a handful of audios nearly a decade ago..."

Yeah... I wonder if we'll be getting a few Extended Cuts of episodes in the forthcoming boxset?

I've read that the frog 'should have been' Missy. Anyway, I look forward to seeing this episode on Wednesday, with no distractions! It seems to me as if the latter half of the series is stronger than the first.
