As confirmed in the back of of DWM 532, the Christmas special has been moved to New Year’s Day. I know it was rumoured for some time.
Who knows, maybe the show has found a new prestigious slot?

I think at this point it’s almost certain this will be the only episode to air in 2019 too.

The move to Sundays has paid off so far so I’m willing to trust this decision.
Quite weird the overreactions on social media about this, ranging from claiming Chibnall’s ruined a tradition to he’s stabbed Moffat in the back. It’s only a week.

I don’t think it’s fair to lay it at Chibnalls door just yet, he doesn’t have that much power. Not sure he had that much to do with the move to Sunday’s or loss of Christmas slot. Those really are commissioner, programmer and exec level decisions.

I do not really care either way as long as I can download it on time on iTunes...

I always imagined, so this could have no basis in fact, that Big Finish didn’t do an annual Doctor Who Christmas special as not to interfere/detract from the television version.
Does this now mean that a Christmas Special boxset could now come out each year!?
Perhaps they already have one waiting in the wings and have been waiting for this news to drop before offering it for sale!!
(Wishful thinking costs nothing)

Mark Gatiss was right when he called being showrunner of Doctor Who a poisoned chalice. Every decision Chibnall makes will be criticised - if indeed it was his decision to scupper the tradition of Christmas Day Doctor Who. Me? I'm sad about this, but if it continues to reinvigorate Doctor Who's ratings, then that's what it's all about, it seems.

I don’t think it makes a difference whether or not it’s Christmas or New Year ratings-wise, they’ll be high either way. I just think it’s Chris Chibnall not wanting to write something Christmas themed, which is fair enough I suppose.

While it's easy to kneejerk and get mad, since it's happened for so long, I'd honestly Chris write something he wants to, rather than try and awkwardly shoe-horn in some sort of Christmas tie-in. Let's call a spade a spade here: rarely did the Specials tie in meaningfully or thematically to the idea of Christmas and its values, and where do you go after the Xmas Truce from 1914 in TUAT?

Equally, newer, younger viewers are (happily) coming to Doctor Who all the time. It's sad that nippers of today are denied the kind of joy youngsters have had in the past, watching the Doctor and friends crunching through the snow, battling monsters having gorged on chocolates and Christmas pudding (the viewers, not the TARDIS crew)! Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without ... etc etc.

As much as it's only a week...it's a wee bit sad to lose that tradition. However leading the New Year's Day schedule is no small thing - it was good enough for Sherlock.
I'm not entirely sure why it matters Chibnall didn't have an idea for a special though...is it really set in stone he must write it? With his fabled writer's room, does no-one else have an idea for a Christmas episode? I've no idea if there's a reason the showrunner must write it. I know Moffat said he was told he had to write the bigger eps when he mooted the idea of someone else doing a special before so maybe it's a BBC thing. Who knows?
As long as it's a good ep, I'm fine but this TARDIS dynamic really feels like they'd be good for a Christmas story together. Can't you see them back in Sheffield having Christmas dinner together? I certainly can.

Hasn't the BBC Christmas Day schedule become really quite crowded in recent years? I would be less concerned with tradition and more concerned with growing my audience and getting eyeballs watching Doctor Who but then I'm not there and I'm just a filthy Yank.

I don't mind having 'Doctor Who' on New Year's Day instead of Christmas Day. I'm saddened by it of course as it's such a shame we don't get to have the first Christmas Special with Jodie Whittaker's Doctor. But I'm glad at least the disappointment of not having a Christmas Special is made up for in a New Year's Day Special. Tim.

Not too much - ITV have been diabolical in the last couple of years on Christmas Day (Maigret? At Christmas?) so the Beeb have had carte blanche to win every timeslot. They'll need something else big and family oriented to fill the schedule but we'll see what happens. And hey, BF have released a January boxset early for us on Christmas Day so we might get that again. River 5 anyone? We got her first two boxsets as early Christmas gifts.

Wow. Fans will have to wait an extra week for an episode they will watch twice!

Or an extended double episode of (insert current year big BBC sitcom that's not overly raunchy but just enough to be a post turkey and wine sort of naughty here).

EastEnders, Call the Midwife, Still Open all Hours, Strictly Come Dancing. Can't think of owt else. ITV's stock hour long Coronation Street and Emmerdale will guarantee second billing throughout the night, but to be honest, there's little over Christmas TV I'll be watching. Did I hear rumours of Mark Gatiss Christmas Ghost Story this year? That could be the one thing worth tuning in for.

Could easily be a big family film too. I think they debuted Avengers Assemble on Christmas Day a few years ago. Not read up on what's coming from the Beeb over the winter, though I'm looking forward to their War Of The Worlds and Les Miserables series.

interestingly looking back through BARB the current weekly figures are almost equal to the Xmas figures for the last 5 or 6 years, but programmes shown on New Year got about a million more.
