Hmm... I wonder if the Beeb might consider showing, say, "Shada", to tide the audience over? What something from before 2005 for the general audience. Seriously can you imagine the cost of rights clearances and reshowing fees LOL

Pre 2005 is possible as it has been done before (HOF and FOE on BBC4?). And after all, its been a while now since they repeated the TVM and Spearhead from Space to acquaint newcomers.

They snuck that news out whilst the finale was still airing. Not really the mark of a great decision.

The PR Machine has come right off the Rails this Series still 20 years of Who at BF next year!
And yearly gaps between series for incumbent casts have always had good return audiences

Early 2020 as opposed to late 2019? Not really that much of an issue is it? If they said late 2020 fair enough but being asked to wait a few months is really no hassle. Especially for people like us who get new Doctor Who from BF every week or so to keep us going!

Especially for people like us who get new Doctor Who from BF every week or so to keep us going! True. & it was an even longer gap between seasons for Westworld & that has a continuing narrative. I think I just expect 1 season per year for Who. I hope it settles down to a yearly format because, despite some midseason misgivings this has been overall a great season, the last few episodes have really made me very hopeful for the future of Who.

RTD said he felt the show needed something to change each year to keep it fresh, new Doctor, new companion - and Moffat had a different approach keeping Rory and Amy then Clara on for so long. Interesting then that Chibnall is looking like he's going down the route of Moffat by keeping all 4 regulars. We can discuss how well he's done by them over the next year I guess but I can honestly say I'm surprised Bradley is doing a second series.

Depends, if they have a 2020 new years soecial that leads in to a january series that wouldnt be too bad. But its its March or April, i just think thats too long and will kill the momentum

Yes, and I speak only for me. I would imagine a young audience - the very one this show has been aiming to win back - will think that seems a lifetime away. A school year is an eternity but for us oldies a year flies by like a quick sneeze Like you some of my fave shows are far from annual - Line Of Duty is one every 2 or 3 years. So I'm used to waiting. The world is so saturated now there's ALWAYS something else to discover. I don't know the reason - if it's availability fair enough. If it's burnout, fair enough. I do know I'd prefer it sooner, of course, but it all concerned need a few more months then alll power to them. I'll be there in 2020 waiting! People will use the term "gap year" even though it's potentially only 3 or 4 months delay. Really small potatoes in the scheme of things.

Spring Doctor Who again - it really would be Chibbers going all RTD.

Yeah. First quarter 2020 or last quarter 2019. Not a huge difference to me and if the extra few months keeps the team fresh and in place, great.

The positive of starting on new years day all sherlock style would lead to a great series opening number and would deffo boost ratings for that series and not get potentially forgotten about like series 9 and ten were

Davy and audio both bring valid points here: plus, lest we forget, Capaldi's hiatus didn't cause that much a down shift in figures from S9 to S10. S9 was 'regular' and it had the big drop from S8.
As I've said before, yes, there's probably some attempt to make Who more event TV, like other BBC flagships, and that could work. My concern, as said, is the kids: will they be there in 2020, or will they have moved on? The gap's smaller than before, but is it still too long? Look how Netflix basically dumped almost all their Voltron's seasons consequtively in the span of two years. And is S11 strong enough to warrant the wait? Will Resolution have enough nuggets to invite future intrigue?

Now, just as an aside, the armchair experts on the usual sites are indignifed, screeching RTD did it consistently. Yeah, and it nearly killed him. Ditto Moffat. When was being in charge of Who loafer's work?

Now, just as an aside, the armchair experts on the usual sites are indignifed, screeching RTD did it consistently. Yeah, and it nearly killed him. Ditto Moffat. When was being in charge of Who loafer's work? Well, a few of the regulars here said exactly the same thing. My response was "read The Writer's Tale", read Moffat's column and interviews during and after Series 10 and then demand a series a year. It nearly cost Russell his sanity, his partner and friendships. Moffat needed the gaps not just for Sherlock but because he was dead on his feet. There's a reason the Beeb couldn't find anyone to take over in 2017 and Moff stayed on - it's the best job in the world for a Who fan....but you'll hate it and be hated for doing it. You will have no life but Doctor Who. You have to keep the flagship seaworthy. It's amazing they've got 3 guys who will take it on so intensely back to back.

Hello again.
While I'm sad that series 12 won't materialise until 2020, I would rather we had a series of decent stories. I really enjoyed series 10 after the fallow year of 2016. It seemed that Moffat had taken onboard criticisms and series 10 while not a hit with critics or the casual audience I loved Capaldi as visiting professor and Bill as shrewd, questioning student.
I digress. Will we get a 2019 Christmas special or have to wait for another New Year's Special in 2020?
A year catching up with Davison Big Finish followed by McCoy Big Finish and then McGann Big Finish for me. Hooray! ooh and Happy Birthday Big Finish!
