Quick question- I never had contact with the series beforehand, but I am quite enjoying myself with volume 1. Do you think I might enjoy this one? It sounds at least interesting and I would be interested in an evil Rassilon... however, I bought vol.1 because it promised great characters like Brax, Ace and the Master and they are all missing from volume 2. I am not so much into the politics and intrigue side of things nor in Romana (although her becoming a rebel sounds promising). Does this release carry itself above that? Worth it to pick up as long as it is still pre-order price? As an overall set with a strong storyline running through it, I liked this better than Vol 1 which was more a collection of four stories imo even with the terrific cast.
Without spoilers, yes there is intrigue but it's not all focused on Gallifrey itself and only in hindsight did I realise how it all tied together... I'd buy it but then I already did so that's not much help, sorry!

I got this one, too, but so far have not gotten around listening to it. I hope when I have some holidays in 2 weeks time that I finally can sit back, relax and enjoy the story unfold.

Just finished this and I loved it so much. Even though it raised as many questions as it answered (maybe more). I really wonder where they'll be going next with this story line. Can't wait to find out.
Also, the music is fantastic.

Since I am on my holidays now- I am having this planned for listening to this week. I just needed to get into the mood to listen to our heroes going over to the dark side. Sounds as if I have something to look forward to.

Right, so I finally started on this. Wow, this is great. The opening monologue by Narvin already sent chills down my spine and the first episode was captivating. And I have not even been following the Gallifrey series! This is great stuff, bleak and getting darker, intrigue, and Rassilon is wonderfully evil. Not something I would listen to when I am in a bad mood, though. But I think a great way during the current sunny heatwave to prepare for the new War Master series coming out tomorrow. I expect that it will be even darker and the Doctor will get his butt kicked.

Just listening the music suite at the moment. There was another BTS interview with the sound designer as well as regular cast interviews.
The series had intrigue to the max. I was surprised that we appear to just have this version of Rassilon for one series. When he was so happy that Olivia and Romana plotted against him I thought he was going to keep them both around, but that changed quickly.
I thought the cover for Time War 3 was out, but it is just a placeholder repeat of 1. We need to wait until February 2020 for more. Plenty of other Big Finish to listen to, but I still wouldn't have minded this returning sooner.

Just finished this. I really enjoyed this and would like to thank again everybody who recommended for me to get this. A great mix of action, intrigue, drama and pathos. And I think it is no coincidence that Lord Eternal Rassilon sounded suspiciously like a certain Mr. Goebbels. Rassilon was great! And Narvin and Romana, too- I really enjoyed having our heroes facing temptations and descending the ladder into darkness. This made for really great drama and I never was quite sure what to expect next. From what I made of the ending- I have the suspicion that we might have a meeting with the errant Doctor in the next set, it kind of is a nice set-up for that. And I am sure that the Doctor would not reject
{Spoiler} a) helping Romana and Narvin finding his lost friends b) give them both a stern talking to along the lines of "I told you so" c) this would be a really nice bitter-sweet re-union
I do not think the will pass down the chance for that. Except if they keep this back for a final bombastic Time War conclusion event? Needless to say that I have now pre-ordered the next set.

When I got into Big Finish a while back, like many, I focused exclusively on Paul McGann's 8th Doctor stories. After a couple months in Quarantine, I started branching out, and quickly fell in love with the Gallifrey range. I've been putting off the Time War sets for a while, but finally decided to treat myself. At the end of the day, I think this is my favorite Big Finish range, Doctor or no Doctor. But, just as with Final Fantasy XII, my favorite Final Fantasy game, I also have a lot to complain criticize. First and foremost this set suffers a major disadvantage inherent in coming in on the heels of the spectacular Gallifrey Time War 1. It's just one hell of an act to follow, yeah? And then the set further shoots itself in the foot (or, perhaps, both feet) by not including Leela or Braxiatel. Rassilon is an excellent addition to the cast (lovely performance) but he's largely kept segregate from the rest of the cast--so Romana and Narvin are basically stuck with just each other to bounce off of and it makes the narrative feel somewhat empty. Some more scattered thoughts presented in the usual haphazard manner: - The "IDU" feels like half of a pun. "I dee you, too, pal."
- It's also a weird initialism to land on. Did the writer(s) not know about intrauterine devices, commonly called IUDs? Every time someone said, "IDU," that's all I could think of. Or maybe those aren't as well-known in the U.K., or y'all use a different name?
- The whole time travel plot feels pretty half-baked. If the goal is to reduce Rassilon's power, or remove Rassilon from power, why does Treyv go back in time to this particular point? Wouldn't it make more sense to prevent Rassilon's resurrection in the first place? I could maybe buy it if Rassilon were depicted as having made a significant impact on the course of the Time War, but there's really nothing to indicate that he was any more or less effective than Livia.
- Rassilon's plans likewise feel a bit weak. The basic goal seems to be to "do a Hiroshima," right? An act of massive, indiscriminate violence to cow potential enemies and encourage cooperation from potential allies. Only... who are these potential allies? The only civilizations (other than the Daleks) with a comparable level of technology to the Time Lords (and thus their only meaningful potential allies) were the Temporal a powers, and they were all annihilated in the preceding boxset.
- Speaking of plans that don't make sense... Nyla's resistance movement. This story is predicated in two things: that there are people out there in the universe familiar enough with the Time Lords and sufficiently advanced to consider fighting them (which I covered in the last point); and Rassilon's Gallifrey being a greater threat to the universe than the Daleks. The only problem being that we haven't actually seen Rassilon do anything that bad yet, so it just rings false that anyone would consider him a greater enemy than the omnicidal Daleks.
- All three of these plots could function very well... but they all require a degree of groundwork that simply isn't present in the narrative.
- In what is becoming a ridiculously absurd running gag with Big Finish's Time War range, the Daleks are once again conspicuously absent.
Ultimately I get the sense that this boxset largely exists to function as a transition piece--a vehicle to move Romana and Narvin off Gallifrey and into the thick of the Time War, where, presumably, they'll encounter more dramatic story threads and characters (come on, Cardinal Ollistra!). As such, it feels almost perfunctory--like the writers were so concerned about where the story needed to end that they didn't pay as much attention to how they would get there. Which, at the end of the day, produces a set with a lot of untapped potential.
This is most evident with how the story uses Rassilon. The script tells us he's scary and evil, but can't spare the effort to show him being very scary or evil. He's almost entirely isolated from the rest of the cast, and spends most of the set popping up now and then to deliver big speeches to the council. Speeches that, infuriatingly, are bookended by very clumsy dialog from Romana, first informing us (invariably correctly) on what Rassilon will say, and then (stating the obvious) explicitly outlining how we're supposed to feel about the contents of the speech. As I get older and consume more and more (and more and more) narrative media, the more I understand that the only meaningful mechanism for drama is dialog: simply placing two characters in a room and seeing what happens. As much as Rassilon's performance succeeds, it ultimately fails to go as far as it should because Rassilon has so few opportunities to interact with other characters--and when he does, he tends to talk at them, rather than to them. And, again, there's the set's biggest weakness: the absence of Louise Jameson. It's like a great gaping black hole in the center of the set that just sucks the energy out of everything simply by virtue of what's not there. Overall it was an enjoyable set, but I feel kinda silly having put it off for so long. It simply wasn't worth the wait. It's not a bad set of stories, by any means, but it's also not very ambitious--and after Gallifrey Time War 1 it really needed to be. These stories remain enjoyable, owing mostly to Ward and Carlsen just always being on the absolute top of their game, but, as is the case with Final Fantasy XII, it's Hard to look at the finished product and not lament just how much better it could have been.

And she's late to the party again. Just finished Havoc. A good follow on from box TW1 (or G9 if you prefer)and introducing us to the somewhat isolated Lord President Eternal. But I honestly thought Trave was going to be found dead in his cell... Given the vibe of dissent will not be tolerated, will all those TLs who were muttering at various points of the story suddenly get eliminated by the IDU? Or IED as I'm thinking of it.
