So... is anyone up for a timely group listen to Old Acquaintance (set on New Year's Eve) at some point in the week between Christmas and New Year? If you've not got it yet, it's written by Doctor Who and Dark Shadows actor Matthew Waterhouse and performed by David Selby as Quentin Collins, set shortly after the end of the television series. And can be found on the short story collection Dreams of Long Ago. Old Acquaintance by Matthew Waterhouse . New Years Eve, 1971 and Quentin Collins is celebrating in the Blue Whale. But something is coming for him… Something he first met in a Welsh village in 1914. Will the people of Collinsport survive to see 1972?

We don't all do it at the same time. Just sometime that week.
You're Scottish, you have enough to do at Hogmanay.

I am willing and able. I have it already downloaded and had planned to give it a listen as the new year approaches.

Just wanted to remind folks to listen to this gem before ringing in the new year. I'd love to hear everyone's perspective.

Funnily enough, I've been wanting to post this, but I seem to keep forgetting. Perhaps I wasn't listening well, but I feel I missed something important. Honestly, I feel my memory on this one is a bit more slippery, and that's no fault of the writer or actor. I'll probably have another relisten when I can find the time. In 1972 when all hope is nearly most until the snow(?) falls, is it Cassandra/Angelique who summons the weather after her heart's desire isn't met or is it wonderful timing?

Very glad for the occasion to listen to this again, it really is an outstanding story. By now, I think I gravitate to Dark Shadows for all sorts of cozy things, from the general atmosphere to the delicious absurdity of a horror/soap mash-up, to being terribly smitten with returning cast, to the wonderful, quality Big Finish stories (including the way Bloodlust recaptured that priceless original "OMG, what are these crazy writers going to do next?" experience of the TV series).
Of course there will be drinking of blood and feasting on souls and voodoo and all sorts of undead things running about the place, but somehow it's still a little more like a sporting event and I'm rooting for the home team, than terror - it's probably been a very long time since the series has actually scared me, with one exception: Old Acquaintance is so well written and acted that it actually scares me, every time I hear it. I'm sure that's a feat that requires a literally phenomenal combination of talents.
