A Jago & Litefoot Christmas Special was for years something that I had hoped for, unfortunately It is something that can never be...or can it?!
I know that the following has been in my mind in the past, but I don’t believe I have written it down before...
Several of the Doctor Who Christmas special stories weren’t specifically Christmassy it was all the Christmas trappings around it that made it a Christmas special.
So could Big Finish take an existing story and add a new soundtrack to turn a normal release into a Christmas special?
A Christmas version of the Jago & Litefoot theme A few extra lines mentioning the season Snow crunching footsteps Christmas laced incidental music And utilise Jago & Litefoot singing God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (from Voyage to Venus)
I was thinking about this today whilst walking the dogs and a title came to mind which I decided to listen to again, with this thought in mind. That story is...
THE BEAST OF KRAVENOS
And now seeing it on offer today I thought I really should write this idea down.
Just change one letter in the title to make it sound more like a Christmas special...
THE FEAST OF KRAVENOS
A benefit of this release would be that it isn’t a Jago & Litefoot story as such. For example Ellie isn’t in it, but that then would offer the opportunity to bulk up the release to a 70 minute special running time by adding a more Christmassy sub plot featuring her and perhaps someone else from the Jago & Litefoot series.... Someone who is a big character from Jago & Litefoot, but has never been heard before... Someone who will be involved in producing the Christmas feast... Mrs Hudson. It would be Higson & Hudson investigates!
Making it into a Jago & Litefoot Christmas Special would also mean it would have the best guest cast I could think of for them....the Fourth Doctor, Romana and K9.

Having now sat down and listened to The Beast of Kravenos again I still think that a Christmas themed story could be intertwined with this. Then coupled with some changes to the music this could be re-packaged as a Christmas special.
However Jago & Litefoot are not the main focus of the story and really don’t contribute much to it’s resolution...so as a Jago & Litefoot Christmas Special this story will unfortunately not suffice.
I am still intrigued by the notion of taking an existing story and repackage it as a Christmas adventure (perhaps because I am so desperate for a Jago & Litefoot Christmas Special), but I really cannot think of what other story from their back catalogue could work...oh well.
Life is full of disappointments.

It is just that on the old Big Finish forum we were talking about a Christmas story for Jago & Litefoot years ago, so I cannot help feeling that Big Finish missed an opportunity.

I think it’s a fun thing to think about the possibilities for, but I absolutely would not want Big Finish fo actually do it.

Season 6 of the 4DAs had 9 releases rather than the usual 8. I wonder if the Beast of Kravenos was, perhaps at one time, intended as a Christmas Special? Maybe the BBC didn't want a BF Christmas special competing with their own?

If we want a Jago and Litefoot Christmas special, or something like it, I'd rather see a Paternoster Christmas where Jago and/or Ellie play a part. Or - much more than that - for BF to get printing rights to J&L.

A fabulous festive folio filled full of frivolity, foul fiends - and phenomenally fine fellows in friendship forever!

Excellent writing! i keep trying to write something for the Divergent Universe Jago & Litefoot anthology (I hope that will still happen) but I can never get their voices right. I hope you have/will be contributing?

I do feel like an ingrate saying it, because Big Finish have given us so many adventures with them, but the lack of a Jago & Litefoot Christmas Special was a huge missed opportunity.
Jago & Litefoot Forever showed that we could have a Jago & Litefoot story without Trevor in the studio, so IF Big Finish could get the relevant permission from Trevor Baxter’s estate and IF Paul Morris could find relevant dialogue from the past for it to work, I wonder IF they could craft a Christmas Special even now?
Just one more encore!

I think the Celestial Toymaker would have made for an excellent antagonist for a Jago & Litefoot Christmas Special. I just imagine him as he was in “Solitaire” running a toy shop although in this case, the people who tend to go into his shop never come back out.

Solitaire was actually one of the stories that convinced me To invest my time into the Companion Chronicles. But am up for anything read or acted by the surviving cast members

The Toymaker and Christmas seem to go together so well. Plus I always thought that his look would work in a Victorian adventure. And I wonder if a young George Litefoot met him in China in the past...

He would have definitely made a lucky escape. I'm imagining an almost fairy tale quality to it with the Toymaker assuming the role of a mysterious figure clad in the clothing of the Mandarin who would suddenly appear one day and then be gone the next. Wouldn't imagine Litefoot besting him but rather engaging him in conversation with the Toymaker intrigued by the inquisitiveness and sheer spirit of this young lad. Before leaving, to save their game for another time...
