So, while the reboot is getting royally thrashed by critics and reports come out of a very troubled production, let's jump back a decade and discuss the first two films.

They were okay, but the second just a bit too jokey for my taste.

I saw the first one after I got it on DVD. Don't think I ever saw the 2nd one but at one point I was intending to buy it, since I thought the first one was pretty decent.
I rarely watch TV anymore, don't even have my cable connected to it, so I mostly miss out on the pop culture of commercial advertising, as such I was unaware that another Hellboy was coming until an ad popped up a week or two ago on a stream I was watching. I did click on it for a little more info, but once I saw no del Toro or Perlman, my interest sort of evaporated.

I did not care too much for the first one - the tired old nazi trope again. If the nazis really had all these supernatural things going on, one would assume they would have been a bit more successful in their endevours....
However, I really love the second movie. I enjoyed the humour, action, characters and Fantasy plot. I have not gotten around to the comics yet, so dont know how they compare.
Also have not seen the new film.... not sure if I should dare....

Comics first Tuigirl, just so you don’t miss out on an amazing story if the film puts you off the idea.

Awesome movies, dark, gritty, action packed, funny, heartfelt & emotional featuring characters you care about, the reboot is a turgid mess of shambolic piffle....awful reboot.

This is the very reason I have not seen a single episode of Game of Thrones yet since I wanted to read the books first. I already have the books on my kindle + the first one as audiobook + the DVDs... but then I suffer from shiny-new syndrome and never get around to it.

It's funny, but with the benefit of hindsight the second Hellboy film feels a bit like a dry run for The Shape of Water. From what I remember, it seemed a lot more interested in the aquatic empath than the title character. I did not care too much for the first one - the tired old nazi trope again. There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

I rewatched the original just recently and while I still loved the characters and the performances, the story was very meh and left a few questions unanswered. I loved the world and the concepts, though.

Del Toro is one of my favourite directors but the Hellboys are quite low in the pantheon of his films for me. There's lovely design, taking what Mignola created on the comic page and mixing it with Del Toro's legendary imagination. Ron Perlman is fantastic casting and the likes of John Hurt and Jeffrey Tambor give solid support. However both films are structural messes from the story point of view and struggle to seem more than set pieces woven together. There are huge stakes on paper but they never really come across as important as they should. The tone is inconsistent too. Selma Blair is quite bad as the love interest and I think Perlman has much better chemistry with Doug Jones as Abe. That's the real heart of the films to me.
Honestly, anyone who likes Del Toro's work but has only scratched the surface with major budget Hollywood work like these two Hellboy films, Blade 2 and Pacific Rim should really dig into Pan's Labyrinth, The Devil's Backbone, Cronos and Mimic. That's where the real Del Toro lies. I'm not even being a hipster d-bag about indie foreign language films besting Hollywood films, as Del Toro has made some great films in the system too - any Dark Shadows fan owes it to themselves to see the wonderful gothic Crimson Peak which is the film Burton's DS should have been while the Oscar winning Shape Of Water takes the Creature From The Black Lagoon and inserts it into a beautiful, romantic Hollywood melodrama. Stunning.
So see Hellboy for a good looking actioner but use it as a stepping stone into his best works which - no exaggeration - are some of the best fantasy and horror of the new millenium.
