Which story, ala the famous Moore comic, acts as both a redefiner yet also affirmation/solidification of everything the Master is as a character? It's tempting to say 'Dark Path' since like KJ, it's also an origin story (and Koschei does indeed have a very bad day), but I'm curious if anyone has alternate suggestions.

I just had an image of Leela opening the Tardis door and getting gut-shot by Crispy. Thanks for that. Seriously though, I choose Dark Water/Death In Heaven. It reaffirms that the Master/Missy and the Doctor are two people that used to be very close but went on very different paths. It solidly affirms how evil she is, as her plan revolves around corrupting the Doctor to her 'side' and usurping billions of corpses to do it. And her sincere declaration that she wants her fiends back becomes the orogin of her redemption arc which ultimately redefines her character (or at least her iteration of the character).

Ooh... Personally? Scott Gray's The Glorious Dead. Its redefinition and solidification of the Master comes in the effect that he has on his surroundings, just like the Doctor. The incarnation depicted here is unique. I don't think he's been explored anywhere else, but he's probably the first instance (circa 2000) of an EU!Master that jettisoned his traditional image. The carnage he wreaks, freed from his confinement in the Eye, is nothing short of apocalyptic. There's a sense of their longstanding friendship there, but both the Doctor and the Master have had enough. They're sick of the blind egocentrism, the dogma, the hypocrisy of one another, so their battle is the ultimate culmination of years of frustration.
It's one of the Master's best, ripping that mould like it were tinfoil.

It has been a time since I read any comics and these appear to be available at Amazon, so there is my chance...

If you've the disposable income, I enormously recommend getting Endgame, The Glorious Dead, Oblivion and The Flood together as a bundle. The Eighth Doctor comics are something truly special. It's what I think the BBC would've produced had the series been picked up again in Britain, 1996. The Dark Path and BFs own Master. Regards mark687 See, I would've said Master as well, but I genuinely can't decide how much of John Smith is in the Master (and vice versa). I guess that's kind of the point really?

Haha, sadly I am over my limit again this month.... so I just ordered the one- just to test the water with one toe so to speak, if it is for me... I am a bit picky concerning comics and while I believe you that they are great stories, the art is another matter.
However, I have seen that the story you recommended has the Doctor in his famous question-mark underpants, and I think that alone is worth the price of admission...

I agree that The Glorious Dead is a great example, as is Master. I'd also say I Am The Master and Mastermind deserve a spot on the list as well.

Thanks to this thread and the comments I remembered that I already have three of the four Eighth Doctor books sitting on my shelf unread.
I had ordered all four books years ago, but the first set had gone out of stock and the company couldn’t complete my collection.
Now I have just order Endgame from Amazon and once that arrives I will be able to start at the beginning! I didn’t release that any of these stories would feature the Master.
