I’ve just had a text from Zavvi saying the steelbook is available to order. Looked on Zoom and a DVD and BluRay is listed too; ordered the steelbook. The Faceless Ones is the mostly missing eighth serial of the fourth season in Doctor Who, which was first broadcast in six weekly parts from April to May 1967. Starring Patrick Troughton as the Doctor, the story concerns a race of identity-stealing aliens known as the Chameleons.
Only two of the six episodes are held in the BBC film archives with snippets of footage and still images existing from the other four. Off-air recordings of the soundtrack also still exist, making the animation of a complete serial possible once again.
The six new animated episodes are being made in full colour and high definition. The DVD/Blu-ray release will also include surviving archive material from the original 1967 production. m.zavvi.com/blu-ray/doctor-who-the-faceless-ones-limited-edition-steelbook/12182797.htmlwww.zoom.co.uk/product/doctor_who_the_faceless_ones_limited_edition_blu_ray_steelbook_blu_ray

Terrific! The six new animated episodes are being made in full colour and high definition - animating the eps that already exist to add colour. Suggests it's being done to future proof for broadcast, I think. Season 4 is really, really filling up now! Smugglers, Highlanders and Evil to go and it's all out on disc! Charles mentioned Highlanders as being one that would be a big issue due to the number of character models required, the locations and the outfits but I can dream - that's a fave story of mine. Faceless Ones, to me, is one of the most contemporary stories for me - not just in terms of the time setting but it is a story that could easily be an Avengers or Adam Adamant. The Zoom code, if anyone is trying to use it, is now one use per account....but it works if you have more than one email and create a new account with the second email!

Oh my Giddy Aunt!
Great setting reasonable paced noir thriller.
Who'd thought we'd ever get an almost fully reconstructed lost season

This story is a personal favourite of mine! Really looking forward to seeing it animated (Hopefully there's a B&W disc with the option to watch the original episodes in their proper place instead of the animated ones to make it like the rest of the partially existing animated stories )

Next stop 'The Evil of The Daleks'? That'd certainly be my pick. The kinds of things they could do with this animation team for that serial... Cross off Evil, The Highlanders and The Smugglers, and for the first time ever we'll have all of Season 4 on DVD for purchase.

Would be a shame to not take advantage of branching offered on BluRay.

Up on Amazon as well. Steelbook ordered, as they've been very nice so far and are bound to have the B&W version.

I wonder if they'll have new techniques to cover some of the film breaks in Episode 3. Some of the patches they created worked, but it's pretty obvious to see that they're patches (usually the picture quality becomes much grainer as they're using zoom-ins of other footage). Here's hoping they've come up with a new way of covering the air hostess closing the cabin door towards the end of the episode. The cut-away they used on Lost in Time was fine, but it would be great if they could digitally recreate the missing frames now for a complete, uninterrupted shot

It was fairly delicate, the Doctor opening a small box to look inside, but you can't see the missing frames. The resolution change between the Lost in Time boxset's clips for Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear vs. the complete DVD release is a real eye-opener. There's every likelihood it's going to look stunning.

I remember the "WOTAN Assembly" special feature It's one of my favourite features in the entire range (I love the behind-the-scenes glimpses into the restoration process). The 'opening a box' thing was a much simpler shot though; I believe I saw/read somewhere such a thing wasn't possible for Faceless as the shot was too complicated. As you say though, technology's come a long way since then so hopefully it will be possible

They might even be able to do a little digital jiggery-pokery with the aid of the animation team. Ooh Which reminds me, I must get round to buying The Macra Terror. ( Worth it~) It's a very pretty release with some lovely imaginative touches. It really feels like they went hard with what they could bring with the freedom of animation.

Shrink me and send my postcard, how brilliant!
Wildly speculative prediction: After we get an individual release for animated 'Evil of the Daleks' (next up ? ? ? ?), Season 4 will be the first of the Troughton years to appear in the blu-ray collection, with 'The Highlanders', and 'The Underwater Menace' also completed with animation. Two stories which might not be so generally popular for individual releases (though I'd buy them instantly) but which will be viable to do as part of the set. *crosses fingers*
Hope there will be an option for viewing including the surviving episodes - or maybe that will be for the Collection release, whenever. EDIT: Yes, there will be the surviving episodes included. Thanks OneTen for pointing me at the info on that.

I'm sure I've seen in confirmed the surviving material will be included in the release. Yes, here we are: Do you think The Smugglers will not be animated for a Season 4 Collection release? (And might they not get Season 6 completed first?)

All I want from this is to not have to wait 8 months after Uk release like with the macro terror or 4 months like with the Jon pertwee blu Ray.
There’s no reason that the R1 releases are being delayed.
