Fantastic!!! I see in the credits Jayston is listed as playing 2 roles - The Doctor-Valeyard and the Trial-Valeyard. what can that mean? I was wondering the same thing. My current thinking is that this will kind of be "The Two Valeyards" - one from around the time of Trial (i.e. the "Young Valeyard") and the 'current' version in Gallifrey's chronology (i.e. the "War Valeyard"/Doctor-Valeyard, as he's supposed to be a 'good guy' here according to the synopsis). There could be another possibility- the Time Lords, in desperation to replace The Master as their top 'black ops' guy, reach into a alt timeline where The Valeyard won at Sixie's trial and was granted all the Doctor's remaining regenerations....
It could also be the older Valeyard against the younger or visa versa....

I just saw this and my jaw dropped. My only thought was "WTF?". I am not really sure how this will fit together and how they will make it work chronologically (heck, how they will make it work logically), but I bet they can pull it off. Somehow. Timey-wimey and all that. Great that Jayston is still around to do these, and that he actually gets used.
I had it already pre-ordered anyways, so can just lean back in a relaxed way and say "bring it on!"
Only thing I am waiting for now is the obligatory "what a gimmick" post. Yep, it is a gimmick, but come on, as long as Jayston is still around and able to do these, why would you not use him? Yeah, no idea if he fits in with the Time War, but well, I am sure we get some nice, fun, enjoyable stories.
And another question- am I right that this is a new picture of McGann? Judging by his longer Doom Coalition hair? I have not seen that picture of him before.

Just because you can doesn’t mean you should, but at least it looks good on this Time War cover. And as for the War Valeyard....my first thought as really, does everyone in the whoniverse have to have a War variant? And then I noticed Who is writing it And the fact that Big Finish will do it well And it will be more Michael Jayston And it will be an opportunity for the Eighth Doctor to meet a foe from his past & future And added to all of that is the fact that I am incredibly excited by the concept!

You can never have too much Michael Jayston, but I do like how they're only rolling out the Valeyard when they have something to say about the character. It's nice, not as obligatory as it could be. There's a lot to explore with his character. The Doctor's id, his shadow, every impulse we've seen him react against made flesh. All those tiny slips of power lust, cruelty or cowardliness. All smothered. Buried as deep and as far as his psyche will go. But, he's still the Doctor. Not the best qualities of the Doctor, not one that we champion, but still a Doctor. Question is... Does he want that?

Does he want that? I completely agree with your assessment. It will be great to get a dark character piece. And when you look at the writing team, I am sure they can pull it off, and there is no question about the lead actors being up to it, as well.
To be totally frank and honest, before this cover was presented yesterday-
I was already asking myself what else they were going to do with the Time War. I think there is only so much pew,pew and violence and battlefields and explosions that you can do, and these stories all start to sound VERY samey. After my initial thought of "okayyy.... weird choice" I actually look very much forward to this set, it might now be one of my most anticipated releases this summer.
Why? For exactly the reasons Wolfie describes above. This will be a fresh take, showing a new side to the War and the Doctor, and not just a repetition of boom, bang and pew,pew and doom and misery. I hope it will be very emotional, heartbreaking and dark.
Make the Doctor cry. Make me cry.

So just a general question why do your think that Tamasan has appeared in three Time War stories and each time has been played by a different actress?
Do you think that was planned or caused by actor availability? And seeing as the character is a Time Lord the producers decided to they could easily justify the change.
Or perhaps they are playing the long game and there will be a story (or boxset) Time War : The Terrible Deaths of Tamasan

Well, I think it could be either possibility- either it was planned to show what terrible toll of lives the Time War even takes from Time Lords... or it was a mundane reason like the actress was not available. Since I am ever trying to believe in the creativity of the writers, I hope it was the former option...

Just browsing on facebook and reading the comments under the Big Finish announcement for this release. Mr. John Dorney having a heated discussion with "the other side"... I sometimes wonder if some people take their entertainment choices a tiny bit too serious. And you certainly cannot accuse John Dorney of only writing the same old all the time.... Really looking forward to some great stories.

Michael Jayston returns to give us his darkly brilliant Valeyard again in a story by John Dorney, and people are complaining about it?
Seeing those two names linked was enough to make me decide to go for the whole series bundle on a range I'd previously just managed to resist (part of my increasingly futile attempts to put some sort of limit on my BF collecting! The Time War drags us all in, sooner or later... )

I really admire the patience John Dorney still has for these types of fans and the motivation to argue with them, although it should be clear from the start that some people won't budge from their core beliefs. I know I would have strangled some of them by now.
So I am bowing to Mr. Dorney in a gesture of respect.

Bummer, no Twelve? She was the best part of set two, I was hoping Julie McKenzie would be back for more.
Never been a huge valyard fan, that isn’t a selling point for me personally, glad others are getting a kick out of that news.

Well said! I knew exactly what you meant and I wouldn't have the patience either - 5 minutes and I'd be unleashing the Drashigs!
It's one of the highlights of being on DU that we get the privilege of hearing from and being heard by some of the amazing creatives behind the stories we love, and it's appreciated.

I'm hugely excited myself about Jayston appearing and even moreso for it being in an Eighth Doctor story. Very glad I already had this pre-ordered.

Wasn’t that already there with the announcement? i distinctly remember the Valeyard booming “NOW IT IS TIME FOR YOUR FINAL DESTRUCTION” at the end of a trailer and I’m sure it was this one.

I like that they’ve gone with the Gallifrey Time War logo. It’s distinct and connects the ranges a bit more. I notice in doing that, the cover loses the definitive article... it's no longer The Time War, just 'The Eighth Doctor: Time War" now. Mind you, it's also shifted from "The Time War 2" to "Time War Volume 3" too. I guess it doesn't truly matter, but it does seem odd halfway through the run (and I suppose it might help Nick Briggs resist announcing the title like the football results on the podcast too! )

John Dorney-he is all man 😉 He writes great stories what else do fandom need and he knows his Who material. He has been for a long time been one of my favourite writers and that in NO WAY diminishes my respect for any of the others. As for Jayston a top notch actor and a wonderful rich vocal that inclines the ear to fall in love with the material
