With Lalla Ward heading to pastures new I am assuming it will be difficult going forward for Big Finish to record with her, so this seems like the perfect opportunity to set up a fitting end for Romana II. Gallifrey have flirted with her demise several times in the past. Romana will always be my favourite companion and I hope there are more stories with the Fourth Doctor in the production pipeline. I rarely know what’s going on with folks where is Lalla off to?Geez that makes it even more certain if she is 😪 and if she rarely records how short will the range of fourth Doctor and Adric adventures be...? I think she is moving to Hong Kong? Something like that.
However, BF have also made it work with Michelle Gomez recording in the States, so with modern technology and the WWW I do not think that distance matters that much anymore.
So, we could see the death of Romana... or we could not.

when the Trial Valeyard made his appearance it confirmed how brilliant an actor Michael Jayston is. To my ear it could have been separate actors. I hope he enjoyed exploring the War Valeyard character. He nailed that story. Yes, that was amazing, wasn't it? The two different Valeyards sounded totally distinctive and the Trial Valeyard sounded years younger...

Really impressive work by Michael Jayston.

I never really cared for the "concept" of who/what the Valeyard is. I don't think we'll ever see his creation point on the tele... but he IS Canon.
Regardless of that, I always thought the REALIZATION of the character to be fine. Okay, Jayston's voice is not quite the same as it was during Trial, but it's still wonderful, and I always jump right in whenever BF does another one with him. I'm glad that Jayston always seems chuffed to be playing the role again.

I agree with the people who have said that even though "State Of" is Bliss' moment to shine...I still don't really feel like she's got much of a character at all. All very peppy and go-getter which is fine, generic Who companion material. I'm not sure most of this set really feels like it's Time War era at all. You could easily have the two middle stories re-written as Helen and Liv, or Lucie adventures and that's a bit of a shame. The Time War banner doesn't mean much when it's used this liberally. That sounds like I don't like the stories and that's not the case...I just felt a medieval romp and the starving delusionals aren't anything even remotely Time War, the scale was no bigger than an average MR release. But - and this is a big but - the set is worth it entirely for Michael Jayston. When we hear this weary, confused Valeyard I thought "Oh, Michael is sounding his age..." then we hear the "Trial" Valeyard mocking The Doctor and Jayston sounds like it's 1986 again. WONDERFUL performance giving two very distinct and wonderful Valeyards. The time loop was both a sad and yet beautiful ending for him. It's going to stick with me. Seems like we could be through the looking glass in Vol 4 with the Doc and Bliss following the Time Strategist into the unknown. "The War Divergent Universe" anyone?

My take on Time War 3 is up at CultBox: great stories, but would have loved more time for the Valeyard! Give Michael Jayston his own Time War boxset please.

Yes, I agree with you, the War Valeyard was the best bit of the set and really should have taken up at least twice the amount of time.

There would be a veritable feast of box sets for us to choose from There could even be a special edition Nick Briggs voice of the Daleks boxed set !

2 The Famished Lands A fantastical horror-comedy melded with a story of all-too-believable realistic horror. I thought the comedy was excellent but I couldn't enjoy it properly because of the genuinely horrific surrounding story, from which the comedy distracted me it its turn. The sound design and music was really first-class but overall the 'mood swings' made it too complicated/advanced a storytelling style for me to enjoy, I'm sorry to say, plus I found the combination of realistic and fantastical plots ultimately unbelievable. There would have been another way for some of the population at least to survive, many other ways probably and all much simpler than the way they came up with - and infinitely more morally acceptable ways too.

Interesting. For some reason, this story worked perfectly for me, off-setting the comedy with the absolute horror, emphasizing and strengthen each other. Isn't this kind of mood whiplash a form a stylistic device?
But I have seen reviews by other people who agree with you in that it did not work for them.
I have to agree with you on the "Fantasy" side of things, however. That was a tad too much and too much suspend disbelief.
And you are right of course- a seemingly green planet, unable to grow it's own food supply? A bit hard to swallow.
The trouble was obviously just created to add drama here and to explain the horrific acts, less emphasis on the "Does this actually make any sense?"
However, I still like this story.
And I just adore the scene {Spoiler} where the Doctor gets high. That was just done perfectly with the sound design. Utterly hilarious. I also thought it was well done coupling the ensuing psychedelic horror-trip with the discovery of the fantasy skeleton army. And you can just hear how much McGann enjoyed the scenes.

I thought that scene was the highlight for sure! and the music picked it up wonderfully.
