Dining with Death by Dan Starkey:
IMO, this and the third set are the strongest in the range, and I’m happy to say that I still believe that after listening to these three stories. Dining with Death is a particular favourite, really taking advantage of the more sci-fi/alien lean compared to Jago and Litefoot. It’s funny, full to the brim with fun and interesting characters, and the dialogue sparkles, which I think Starkey has a particularly good ear for.
The Screaming Ceiling by Guy Adams
Finding a balance between eerily spooky, and bone-splittingly funny, The Screaming Ceiling stands among the best of the range. Joe Jameson’s turn as Carnacki is fantastic, and is a guest casting I could still remember clearly before starting my relisten. And the sound design on the titular ceiling is some of the best BF have done creature wise imo. I can always picture exactly how it looks every moment it’s around.
Spring-Heeled Jack by Gemma Arrowsmith:
If I’m not mistaken, this was Arrowsmith’s debut right? If so, it’s a bloomin great debut, and if not, it’s still a bloomin great story. I love the myth of Spring-Heeled Jack and the twist of who he is in this is a great one. The performances are all top notch, especially Joe Sims, and the pacing is really solid, allowing for some great character moments within all the hijinks.
