Yes, I was saying much the same to Audio Watchdog on Facebook last week - the parallels are uncanny. Yet it's almost the more surface level things that inspired Pertwee's Doctor. Take them and add them to a LOT of Nigel Kneale influence, to the point he refused a writing gig on the show in S7, and you very much get early Pertwee. Vocally I always thought Gerald's Adam sounded a bit like Anthony Ainley. That slightly higher pitched, upper class RADA accent. Lovely on the ear. Adam may well have stayed on the air longer, perhaps until 1970, but I believe Gerald and Sidney Newman who was then Head of Television Drama at the Beeb did not get on one bit to put it mildly. With the "official" story being it looked cheaper than it's rivals like The Avengers, The Saint and the plethora of ITC shows, it got canned sadly. The BBC ditching a popular show just because of the whims of it's hierarchy? Where have we Who fans heard that before? Newman apparently was no fan of Harper as Adam and I have to say...I don't think he could be more wrong. Dashing, funny, great at the stunt scenes, a handsome lead....Gerald was perfect. Just PERFECT as Adam. He's still going too, thank goodness. Enjoying a nice retirement at the ripe age of 88. BF should give him a call for an alt-universe Adam! If the show can have killer carnations, hundreds of commuters disappearing in a tunnel on-board a train, killer old ladies, magicians trying to conquer the world...it can have alternate Adams. Maybe Gerald can play an Adam who DIDN'T get frozen and is indeed 99 years old. Just imagine! No...let's let him enjoy his retirement. Would be fun though! Of course Juliet Harmer is only 76 by comparison. Let's get her in. Not acting in 32 years....who cares! Maybe she can be one of the sinister grannies if BF do "Death Begins at Seventy" or "The League of Uncharitable Ladies". 29 eps and they found time for not one but two stories about killer old dears! Another thought - although the carnations aren't killers, strictly speaking (though they might have driven their victims that way with cravings) but... a plan to conquer by using an advertising campaign distributing plastic flowers as the weapon! I've only just made the connection and the daffodils were killers and Robert Holmes has the Doctor specifically rule out gas as their method. That's a big nod to AAL in both his Nestene stories, he must have been a fan. Some of the carnations were killer, I'm sure. I know the mass consumption ones were for the addiction but when they're going to use them on undesirables like Adam, I thought those ones were said to be *ahem* special. But yes, it's amazing the connections you can find with AAL, which is all the more baffling it only ever gets mentioned in the context of The Avengers when it clearly had massive influence elsewhere too.

I think they're all the same, there's just the one formula 'HB 27' (and the inventor is dead so no chance for any 'upgrade') and when Adrienne Corri's ad. exec character puts a whole vase of them under Adam's nose she 'nose' he must have taken the antidote to remain immune from their 'influence'. She didn't expect him to keel over, she intends to shoot him the old-fashioned way!
Over 50 years on and we're talking about the properties of his imaginary carnations, RBS would be very pleased!

I mean they barely even bothered with allegory, when they turn the BK into the detergent, the billboard ads literally say something like "Britain's Sky High Detergent", with Georgie not only getting the shakes going cold turkey but imagining fields of the flowers everywhere. I wonder what the metaphor was!

Have little interest in this. However, I listened to the excerpt earlier and I think another range is about to be added to my list...

I finally listened to this and was charmed by the whole thing. After some confusion in the very beginning, these stories came together brilliantly. The casting was brilliant. Blake Ritson is just perfect as a man out of his time, but also slightly ahead of his time. Milly Thomas was just the right amount of smart and sarcastic while still having warmth and feeling her enjoyment of her present situation. And Guy Adams has such an amazing voice for audio. I always loved when he was interviewed for behind the scenes tracks because I can just sit and listen to his voice. I know he's done bit parts here and ther, but now finally we have him in a substantial part and he is wonderful. Looking forward to Volume 2!

I finally finished the whole set a few days ago. This is one of the best releases Big Finish have done. Kudos to everyone involved.

I listened to it again, and to be honest I do have a minor issue with it. It was nagging me a bit with the first listen but it stood out this time. I think they worked way too hard to make Georgie the anti-sixties female character. I loved her and I completely understand why, but it seemed almost like the point of the set was to prove that women could be heroic in the past, and less about Adam Adamant making his way in a new world. I still love this set and it's not much of a criticism. As problems go, it's probably a good one to have. But I almost felt hit over the head with it. Anyone understand where I'm coming from?

As its a been a week
This was as great as the 1st set continues the fantastic mix of 60s flashy daring do adventure and a study in the nature of identity, loyalty and friendship. Congrats to all involved.

I agree with mark, the second box set was just as good as the first. Each episode was very different but contributed seamlessly to the ongoing plot. The second episode was surprisingly disturbing in places, but it didn't go too far so as to put me off (which I thought it might). I think exploration of Adam's identity was fascinating, but I kind of hope that we never truly find out either way. Regardless, I'm seriously hoping that there's a future for this range!

I loved this one. I came as close as I ever have to turning it off in the second episode, though. I had a really hard time with it. About 15 minutes in a was actually angry, thinking that I didn't really want to listen to someone being tortured like that. But the insight we got into Adam's character from this was fascinating. I'm glad I stuck it out.

No, thank YOU for having high expectations of your audience. Your story brought me along when I was hesitant, and I was well rewarded for it. You could have tamed it down, but the fact that you didn't made it all that more satisfying in the end. I'm so happy that you are playing Simms. Every time in the last few years that I have heard you in a BTS track speaking about something you've written I think, "Guy should act more in these. His voice is amazing!"
