As the New Series releases continue, it seems our good Doctor in various incarnation is guest starring more in various places.
On TV, two Doctors appeared in SJA and The Twelfth Doctor had a glorified cameo in Class.
I love how River is going through them all now, having a slightly different relationship every time.
Colin Baker played two parallel universe Doctors in Gallifrey IV.
The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield had the Doctor Who logo in the past, but really it's always been her series with even the Seventh Doctor and Ace beign the supporting players to her.
The Doctor has also popped up in The Lives of Captain Jack, The War Master, and even had a recurring role through various seasons of Jago and Litefoot.
If Charlotte Pollard III ever surfaces it will feature The Eighth Doctor somehow.
How do people feel about this? Do you think there are times when the story might as well have been a Doctor Who release? An advantage is that you can tell what would be a Doctor Who tale from another point of view.
Both SJA stories could have arguably aired as Doctor Who specials - the first one being Doctorlite and the second one really focusing on Jo and Sarah's relationship the Doctor and acting as a lvoe letter to the Classic Series.

I like it! However, it should still stay the series of the characters and not have the Doctor take over. He also should be used sparingly and not become a plot item if anything else fails. So far, Big Finish has done a great job- in The New adventures of Bernice Summerfield in the unbound universe, the Doctor is more or less Benny's sidekick. I think this is also why on the cover of the next Benny release, it is Benny holding the screwdriver- not the Doctor. In the lives of Captain Jack, it also is more or less Jack's story, until the end when they really have to join forces. And in the latest War Master story- well, this is the Master's story.
It features the Doctor, but
{Spoiler} he is seriously on the back foot and slightly incapacitated and the Master is in control more or less the whole time- and he really enjoys humiliating and hurting the Doctor. Great for everyone who was waiting for hearing the Doctor getting his butt handed to him.
The River Song series also are good examples, although in the second release, it was a bit borderline on how much the Doctors actually took over, at least for my taste. The following installments did this a bit better I think.
I think with this way of story telling, as you say, we can see other sides to the Doctor, when the spotlight focuses actually on someone else and he does not necessary have to be the hero who saves the day.

River 3 is a great example - the Fifth Doctor is in every story but River is absolutely the main character.

All for it as long as the story is strong but not in every single story The only time a Doctor should appear in another Characters series is if itβs Bennie and David Warner ππππ

Having just heard Benny again after a long time in Legacy and given that I loved David Warner's take on the Doctor. Yes, it sounds like a winning team.

It's another one of those "it depends" ones, isn't it? Capaldi was in Class to get it some promotion (which...ummm...didn't work) and surely that's why a lot of the above happens. People buy Doctor Who more than a lot of spin-offs, so if putting, say Colin in J&L gets more on board for that range, that's probably the best reason for it to happen. OK, the story being good is a better reason but luckily that tends to happen anyway. None of these seem overly cynical, marketing led decisions that were shoehorned in. Personally I would like to see River completely removed from The Doctor's other selves, Master or the DW timeline for a bit. I suppose it seperates her range from Benny but I'd kinda like to see River's solo adventures having her own escapades a lot more. Though after hearing her with Lisa B last week I would 100% be down for a Benny/River box. How many McGann/River stories we gonna end up with though, she's met him nearly as much as she did "her" Doc in Matt Smith! Being able to plaster Paul McGann's face on a box is gonna sell more, so yeah, there's gonna be crossovers more and more for ranges, I think, but as long as there's enough novelty to last and it never seems box-ticking...I'm still OK with it.

As long as it serves the story. I know in the past Nick has said a Doctor would have to in any new Dalek Empire, which in my opinion would be a mistake as then it would 'just' be DW story.

For me, it would certainly help having a recognisable character from the Doctor Who universe in any new Dalek Empire. Someone like Brax or Jenny or an incarnation of the Monk...someone you cannot be 100% certain will win and survive the story.

Yeah, I wouldn't say no to a character like that but with the Doctor you know there is no real threat.

Personally I wouldn't like to see a 'Dalek Empire' series that features The Doctor. I want Daleks, with plenty of them and plenty of extermination ... plus the Daleks to succeed in whatever dastardly plan than have. So leave The Doctor at home, or it just becomes a Doctor Who story with Daleks.

I think Return of the Daleks did well in being a Dalek Empire story that just happened to feature the Doctor, rather than a Doctor vs Daleks story featuring the cast of Dalek Empire, though Iβm not sure if that balance could be sustained over an entire series.

A serious issue you'd run into is darkness-induced audience apathy, I think. Keeping the audience engaged enough that they believe there's a chance of success, while simultaneously performing the opposite. It'd be very Blake's 7 in that regard. Mind you, the idea of the Doctor failing against the Daleks isn't without precedent. They unambiguously succeed come Patient Zero.
