I poked around the internet, but couldn't find a review. Nor does the BBC4 website have links anymore on their website.
I haven't listened to the series myself, but did find video trailers that were made to publicise the series, and also found a cast list. It starred Harry Enfield and Billy Boyd, so two positives right there.

I thought the first series was pretty poor. The second series was much better - I didn't even object to the one or two changes they made for dramatic purposes - which is remarkable, considering the unusual narrative style of the second book. Of course, the second series also kept teasing series 3, which was going to be a full-blown Hitchhikers crossover (if you aren't aware, there's an actor in the published sections of "The Salmon of Doubt" who resembles Ford Prefect). Unfortunately, then Dirk Maggs changed company and was no longer available to write the third series; then the guy who replaced him also didn't write it either, and the whole third series was dropped.
But 8 dollars - I presume that's 8 dollars American - I think that's a bargain if you're getting both series. It's probably worth the money for just one of them, really.

Are you familiar with the stories already? You probably know this already, but they share quite a few elements with other stories Douglas Adams wrote for Doctor Who, and I could imagine that could come as an unwelcome surprise if you didn't know that.
I happen to like those stories, so I didn't mind. I enjoyed the performances. Peter Davison is in the second one!

I quite enjoyed both of them. I felt of the Dirk Gently adaptations, it was the only one to really nail the character (Mangan was too much of a conman, Barnett was not enough of one, but Enfield really struck that "Is he a swindler or a psychic genius or both?" sense the character has in the book) and, of course, the only one to actually adapt the stories of the books. The cast was very good, the production values excellent. For 8 dollars, I'd go for it.
