That was an interesting interview. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Really interesting!! BF C/D buyers now only 40% of the customer base. And will only continue to drop. While it will never die completely physical media is going to be ever more niche, aimed purely at collectors and increasingly expensive due to economies of scale. I was trying to buy a new Panasonic 4K Blu-Ray player recently and despite having only come out in February, even Amazon didn't have one available, let alone any physical shops. When I did find somewhere I could buy it, I bought two and stuck the other one at the back of cupboard.

I wonder how much business they would actually lose if they went DL only. I imagine a lot of the diehard fans would keep buying, it would be the casual buyers who see a CD in their local bookshop or on Amazon that they would lose, but then BF presumably must make a lot less profit from those sales anyway.
The BF app has made me a lot more comfortable with downloading, before that it just struck me as too hard and too much effort.

No mention of BF price increases world wide Would be interesting to get that % broken down by UK / Non-UK. Presumably UK sales are more than 40% CD while non-UK are less than 40% DL. Would also be interesting to know if it varies much between franchises.

I am curious to find out if there is anyone who is 100% D/L only and who hope that physical product is banished - and the opposite. Those who are pure physical product etc.. Would be really interesting to find out "why".. I have always maintained and believe that both formats can co-exist.

Would be really interesting to find out "why".. I have always maintained and believe that both formats can co-exist. I am 100% CD (other than DL only releases) and I would use the app to listen while walking, but every time I purchase I ALWAYS purchase the CD if there is one. However I would actually prefer if they went DL only.
Why? 1 - Storage space for my collection 2 - It is going to become harder and harder to get a new car with a CD player, which is where I do most of my BF listening 3 - Cost of DL is cheaper
It will doubtless have occurred to the more perceptive that I could achieve all of the above 3 by myself switching to DL-only at any time and that is of course correct. However I am a physical collector, I like my physical collection, stopping it and living with the knowledge that there were gaps in my collection would be a wrench. Much easier if BF took the decision away from me by going DL only.
What would you do if thy went DL only? Stop buying or switch to DL? And if you did switch, would there be even a part of you, even a tiny part somewhere deep inside, that was relieved?

I can't imagine there's anybody who feels like that but this is the internet so I'm probably wrong. I'm 100% DL for everything except Films (and the every decreasing number of TV shows I'm interested in that actually get blu-ray releases) and some PS4 games. But I don't do Streaming and make sure everything it backed up on hard-drives, even if it means doing some slightly dodgy things to get books and comics (that I've paid for) on there.

I would miss CDs, though less than I would have if they were still producing the informative booklets in every release.
I'm a bit eclectic about being CD/DL - I'm CD for most ranges like the MR (after 50 because I was too late for those from BF), the CCs, etc., etc. and DL for a few single-story ranges like the 4DAs and 8DAs. But I bought the new 4DAs and 'Lucie Miller' as CD because I always buy box sets on CD. Noone said I had to be logical about this, did they?

I am probably 90% download/stream only. I buy the occasional Blu-Ray if its a good special edition but generally have no interest in physical media. It is of course also better for the environment to go digital! I got rid of about 600 CDs a couple years ago.

In the beginning, I was absolute physical product only. Maybe because I am a bit of a technophobe and adapt to new technologies very slowly and only when pressured. However, since I have been living abroad and moved to different countries, it just became impractical to maintain a collection of physical products, be it books, movies or CDs. It took me years, but I got a Kindle and a friend of mine gifted me her old ipod and this is how my download life started. I still prefer physical product, since I am not only a collector, but a hoarder. However, I think with the advent of downloading, my hoarding habit has improved A LOT. Since I am still only living in a small flat, it does not look like a garage sale anymore (you would not believe how much stuff I could fit into my tiny room... you would have thought it was bigger on the inside ). I however still crave the physical product of things that are especially precious to me- certain books (which maybe only exist in hard copy), my favorite movies (and my growing Who collection, especially since I can get Classic legally only on DVD) and even my favorite BF releases on CD. Still, since my brother has sold me his old iPad, I really fell in love with the BF and the Comixology app and have now completely gone over to the dark side that I would not miss the iPad for the world. And I used to laugh about people and their Apple addiction (including my brother who always needs the latest Apple products). So yeah, I think I would not mind of BF went DL only and I think I would not really miss the physical release (as long as the iPad and iPod keep working ). I do not even have a CD player in the house anymore (only a laptop with external drive).

I never wanted to go download for my Big Finish stories as I had so many BF CD's in my collection, which obviously I wanted to keep as a collection. However when the 'per order' charge came in - on top of the postage - it became too expensive to buy physical releases from BF so now it's download only. (Bar the odd special set or a random too good to miss offer.) Stopping my 'collection' did grieve me for a while but there's only so much money spare for luxury items so it is what it is. Should BF ever go download only it wouldn't affect me.
I do buy Blu-rays as I can buy those from a variety of places in the UK/EU and they still cost less in postage to send to me than BF wanted to charge to send one CD from the UK to Ireland. So I haven't deserted physical media completely.
I do love Netflix though!

I have been a collector of all things (books, cd, cassettes, vinyls, dvd, bluray, VHS, comic books, assorted "nerd" culture collectables" since 1981 (before my wife was born). I will always be a physical buyer. I also copy them to my HDD's and when I want to lisen to 1 not at home I put it on my MP3 player (lunch time at work every day). I have honestly only bought 2 BF d/l releases only because they were D/L only. 1 was Davros Mission the other was that Sigmund Freud series last year (?).
If they cut all physical tomorrow for example.. I would be torn.. Debating whether or not I have enough stories to last my lifetime.. Do I break my personal code and purchase D/L? if so I would then have to burn onto blank cds.
Space is not an option as we sold our townhouse and bought a big house on a much bigger property with a massive shed/garage out the back that can fit 4 cars quite easily.

The world's going to make the decision for people regardless. Not to be the tinfoil-hat guy but the big media companies don't want you to be able to own what they sell. I suspect games will go first, then audio. Video will last longer but will get ever more expensive.

BF will eventually come to that point, with only a few limited edition "event" releases on CD and nothing else. JHE must be looking a the cost of a warehouses, premises, light and heat, salary etc. It's a question of when not if.

From reading your other posts you have a toddler ... don't underestimate the amount of cheap junk grandparents will buy for their grandchildren
That has been my undoing.

I wouldn't say banished -- I wouldn't want to take the option away from anyone else -- but to me it's baffling that there's anybody under 70 left who still buys CDs. I can't even remember the last CD I bought. Or physical copy of a video game either, for that matter. The only physical media I buy anymore tend to be movies/TV seasons, and those only because the streaming services are so fickle with what they have available (especially here in Canada).
