I managed to fit in Web of Time for the fourth time this morning and i have to say all of these stories really warm my heart and its a set i feel like Ravenous 2 and 3 where i will put on story one and end up finishing story four in no time. Thats the mark of a good set a kind of “go on....ye know you want to!” 😂😉🤪

The Talents of Greel is OK, but I’ve heard it all before. Or rather I’ve seen it all before in The Talons of Weng-Chiang.
There’s little new backstory to be had, with Greel’s plans being what we’ve already seen. Chang is probably the one that’s fleshed out a little more, but I do think he’s a rounded character on television anyway, even if the performance has come under some criticism in recent years. I didn’t think Nicholas Goh was much better, his performance is very exaggerated and did take me out of the story a couple of times.
The one difference it does have to Talons is that Talents leans more towards the theatrical side, which does begin to fade away in the former. As teased in the promotional material, River & Jago’s song together is good fun. I don’t have as much of an affection to Jago & Litefoot as many do here. I do like the pairing, but their Doctor Who appearances are more than enough for me. Having said that, it was nice to hear more from Christopher Benjamin. I wasn’t keen on the retrospective foreshadowing at the very end, though, it just comes across as being clumsy.
I think it’s a story I could have done without. It didn’t advance anything and it’s a rehash of Talons, dressed as a prequel. It’s another tenuous link, with the Doctor’s diary used as an excuse for the third time, in addition to River conveniently needing to recharge her vortex manipulator.
Overall, it’s very much a mixed bag and the worst River set to date by far. The most gimmicky story on paper is An Unearthly Woman, but that ends up being the best of the lot by focusing itself on its characters and almost distancing itself from An Unearthly Child. Peepshow is the one I felt had the most potential, but I think it ends up overstaying its welcome due to the structure of the story. The Web of Time and The Talents of Greel are just prequels to their respective television stories. The latter is just that little bit better because it doesn’t feature as much excruciating exposition.
Fingers crossed Series 7 isn’t stories from the next four incarnations. We’ve had hints of a Weeping Angel story, which is another returning element, but they’ve been well done on audio so far and River has a strong history with them that’s ripe for exploration, particularly post-Manhattan.

Finished Peepshow. Well, that was fun. While it does not have a lot of substance to it, I enjoyed it non-the less. I also loved the not-so-disposable characters {Spoiler} including the saber-toothed tiger
Also, lovely little cameo.
We do not always need to have the world in danger. A little run-around in a miniscope can be pleasant enough.

One thing I have always wondered- River's lipstick. How come she can use it on other people but never gets affected by the drugs herself? Does she swallow an antidote beforehand? And how does she test it out? Why has nobody ever explained this and spun a story around it? Some lipstick failures might make for some hilarious entertainment....

So, you know how River’s been appearing everywhere along the timeline... shouldn’t she have bumped into Clara by now doing her Impossible Girl Saving The Doctor Throughout His/Her Timelines type thing?
Ps. I have bought River 6, obv, it’s teed up for next week’s commutes.

Right. I have now finished with the last story. Well, it was quite good. Yes, it was not re-inventing the wheel, but it did not have to. It was fine as it was. I also did not think River was too shoe-horned in, at least not any more than into anything else. I definitely loved her musical number and her duet with Jago. So what do I think of River Song Volume 6? We get some good enjoyable and fun stories, with the first one definitely the best of the set. I appreciated that this set was a bit more light-hearted and it made a nice change for me coming out of all the recent time war stories. Does Volume 6 rate as highly as the previous 2 sets in my mind? No, the last two I liked more. But this was by no means bad and I definitely liked it more than Volume 3. Now I am curious what they have in store for us for next time?

An Unearthly Woman doesn't just steal the show, it becomes one of the best River stories and Bradley era Doctor stories straight away. Wonderful stuff filled with fannish wonderfulness. If I had to pick three fanboy moments that I just adored: 1. Policeman at the start. Same as it ever was.... 2. "Tune in next Saturday at 5.15 for the BBC's new science fiction show, Professor X" 3. At the fade out, River's theme being played in the Hank Marvin guitar style of the time - was it John Smith and The Common Men playing? Maybe River knows The Honourable Aubrey Waites! Though given a later story has a Dudley Simpson like arrangement of the theme...I guess she gets around!
It wasn't much of a story in terms of the threat. I liked what was there - there was a real feel of the nights drawing in, the fog falling and the alkie teachers going for a drink at pretty much every opportunity! Still unsure of this Barbara though. She's cold and distant wheras Jackie Hill's Barbara was stern when needed but kid and quick to embrace. Needs work. Nice to get the David Bradley cameo.....shame River didn't snatch that kiss!

On the subject of the theme, one thing I did forget to mention is the different versions of the theme played in the background of each story. They were nice variants.

Just started on this boxset. I’ve not read the comments above for fear of spoilers, but... Part one was just excellent! Makes me think I should get into the new first doctor stuff as I loved the portrayals here of the original companions. Plus of course the Doctor himself, albeit briefly. The sixties really are a world away from today, aren’t they?

If you enjoyed the First Doctor story you will enjoy am sure the box sets i for one didn’t want to attempt but when I did I liked them very much you get used to the alternative take on them all,as long as the material is good am all for continuing with the range. As for this set I found it very pleasing and nostalgic

I’ve posted her before but she is here and I remember the connection to Doctor Who book mythology this picture has become so ingrained in my mind when I listen to this audio.

came to this post a bit nervous cos i wasn’t thrilled by this set but a lot of comments already say what I felt. to me it all felt a bit unnecessary. ‘Unearthly’ was ok. The alt-1st line-up were good. i disliked the Professor X gag- those kind of things take me out of the story. The conceit of Barbara & Ian investigating a new pupil was spoiled by the TV version having done it first. I’d rather they investigated something else which at the end triggered Barbara to become curious about Susan leading to the TV episode. ’Web’ was ok but as has been said, Ralph Watson really doesn’t sound era-appropriate I’m afraid. such a shame that I couldn’t adjust my mind to compensate. ’Peepshow’ was the best of the bunch for me. A fun romp, a few surprises. ’Talents’ was a mixed bag. The plot was underwhelming in the extreme, but the cast really elevated it. Both music and sound design were great: very strong throughout. this box has made me look forward to the next one, as a) it will surely be better; b) it’s the end of the bundle and I can have a rest from River. Sorry Big Finish, a rare miss for me. All opinions they say are valid.I admit it was a bit self indulgent and i went back to the first Box set to get a relatively Doctorless set of adventures and i really love the range and know River can go it alone and be MARVELOUS.She has time vortex manipulator she can go anywhere she chooses and she has occasional use of the TARDIS.

I loved the idea behind the set and what the writers did with it, so it worked very well for me and it's my equal-favourite 'River' set so far! (tied with Vol 5.)
But I can see why revisiting old stories in this way would be a 'Marmite' release and so it has proved with quite a few people, judging by this thread.
(Does that translate for our overseas members? 'Marmite' is a classic British food product which people are said to either like a lot, or not at all. Personally I'm 50/50 on it... )

I am more of a Vegemite person myself, although I only ever used it sparingly on toast and it makes good stock for soup.

Now you mentioned Vegemite I expect all our Aussie friends will be off to find a jar and make some toast! I remember the week I arrived and people made that old joke of offering me Vegemite in a Nutella jar (it is that overly sweet brown cocoa/ nut- paste many Germans are so fond of). Since I already knew about Vegemite, I just took it, spread it onto my toast and ate it without problem much to the disappointment of the onlookers.
