Now I haw very little memory of the tv show, something about person who can change into a animal? A fire? And a few pg tips cards...... I remember seeing a few episodes of Space: 1999 years ago and I thought it was dull... it was certainly no UFO!!! So although I'm not interested in Space 1999 audios a re-imagining of UFO on audio would be cool. I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope that the Anderson/BF team-up leads to those one day. The only Anderson franchise I would be excited for would be stingray......the only one I ever watched as a youngling..... as said happy to give most a try, but wish they would keep Briggs off the writing for a bit

Space: 1999 will always be a cosmic/Gothic horror series for me. Its first season never strayed too much into the arena of series like Trek, preferring its own Castle of Otranto-style exploration of human mortality. There's a sense of near-overwhelming loneliness to Alpha's stray transit through the cosmos. Outward bound. What are we, or those like us, willing to pay for survival and certainty? Will you surrender your authority, your family, your friends or even your sense of self for that one opportunity to find a new home? Will you be given a choice?
The original series struggled with its pacing, I think. Trying a bit too much for Kubrick's 2001 aesthetic, that's something I think it's second season improved on, but it had a lot of intriguing concepts. A lot of intriguing character actors as well. End of Eternity with Balor was always a favourite. It'll be interesting to see where this reboot decides to go.

Out of curiosity, TV episodes (Seasons 1 and 2) are worth watching beforehand?

Out of curiosity, TV episodes (Seasons 1 and 2) are worth watching beforehand? Given it's a reboot and hasn't been released yet, it's a bit hard to say. The reboot aspect should mean you don't have to, and the originals may act as spoilers. On the other hand, if you want a feel for the series, it may be worth your while. Note that there was a shift in the tone in season 2, but its conceivable they might go for an amalgamated tone? Slightly odd, given we know there's a second boxset (at least), that no bundle is being offerred.

Nick responded to my question on his Facebook page saying that he was just writing the first one and then transitioning into the Script Editor’s role.

The Powys Media novels do a good job of not only having the transition from Series 1 to the radically different Series 2 make sense, but also dealing with the idea (expressed a few times in Series 1) that the moon's journey through space isn't just some random event. Thus explaining how they manage to encounter a new planet pretty much every week and stay in its vacinity just long enough to resolve that episode's story. Unfortunately, they're all Print on Demand only at this point and pretty expensive.

I'm only writing Breakaway, there will be other writers on the rest of it, with me as script editor.- would be Nick’s direct quote. I know Jamie was script editing the pilot. Perhaps moving forward the role is transitioning.

Having enjoyed them first time around as an infant, I have found seeing episodes from the early 1990's repeats (S1) and the recent S2 episodes on Forces TV (Freeview) widely varied. On balance, I think S1 had the better format, of which Martin Landau was very much aware of, given the cost cutting measures of S2, such as making two episodes for the price of 1, for example one with himself in the lead and another with Barbara Bain, with either having small roles in the others episode. This was achieved by one being on the base with the other exploring the planet sets etc. The first series is atmospheric and has a larger cast and brilliant sets for a TV sci-fi, whilst S2 seems more like where Star Trek TOS may have headed, with a fourth series. less good than the previous as per S1, 2, 3 etc. I also get the impression from the BF blurb, that the reimagined base is not on the Moon itself, so we will not have to get our heads around the Moon going 'interstellar' this time around. The biggest revelation for me was that the Eagle transporters influenced Star Wars in a major way, with a key spaceship design being rejected as being too closely aligned to the series: 1999 > Millenium Eagle > Falcon The original model was adapted/repurposed for the opening scene of Star Wars Episode 1, with the original cockpit retained on the resulting 'flattened out hand' of the eventual Millenium Falcon (the thumb?) shape. I cannot be the only one to have noticed that it is a 'hand' surely? Anyway - the point is that this is where the name came from. Like Chewbacca, Han Solo, Obi Wan Knobi, Skywalker, Greedo, et al, George Lucas was fairly pulpy in his ideas and names, and Space 1999 was certainly a contermporary influence as the key big budget Sci-Fi of 1975, when they got to work on Star Wars production. I'll get my Anorak..... Attachments:

Brian Johnson was offered the visual effects supervisor job on Star Wars by George Lucas based on his work on Space:1999 but had to turn it down because he was committed to the show’s second season. He did however move into that role for The Empire Strikes Back. If I remember my reading from Starlog magazine from the 1970s, Johnson started his career working on some Hammer movies and also worked on Thunderbirds. I also think he may have won an Oscar for his work on Alien.p

I was/am extremely fond of series 1 of Space 1999, all be it finding episode one 'Breakaway' quite boring, and episode 2 'A Matter Of Life', ridiculous and making little to no sense. Series 2, I find rather cheap and childish, and with the exception of two or three episodes it doesn't interest me at all. I was always shocked to find that Dr Helena Russell wasn't revealed to be an android at some point, such was Barbara Bain's acting abilities & oddly very limited bodily movement, I thought that concrete hair-do had been written into the script as a clue to viewers ! I was wrong.
I'm looking forward to the Breakaway audio reboot, hopefully it'll be more exciting than the original TV version. I'll certainly be ordering it, although I don't think the trailer bodes too well, but then it is just a trailer. Fingers crossed.
