Just finished War Wounds. Another really enjoyable story. This set may not be on the epic scale of say Dark Eyes but it's just good fun stories and is working for me.

I have come to really look forward to these Chronicles stories. I almost always go into them with a little trepidation, and so far I have been very happy with them all. This one is just the same. I thought they were 3 strong, well written and well acted pieces. Dudman's 12 was just fine for me. I'm not looking for it to be perfect, just have enough of his essence to keep me engaged in the story. Well, he did that in spades! I LOVED the Mary Seacole story. I think it's my favorite of the set. I knew nothing about her, hadn't even heard of her before this. I love when I get to learn actual history through Doctor Who. I thought her relationship with Twelve was wonderful. Both characters with soft hearts and hard exteriors.
Good that Danny gets to have his own adventure with the Doctor, if only to allow him to relate to Clara. And that is what I got out of this story. Not that it was his moment with the Doctor (and yes, that is important. It was a good moment) because the Doctor forgets. But what it means now that he has had his own adventure in the Tardis, and now HE'S the one keeping secrets. And he can more easily see through her. (As an aside, I always hate how the on board companions treat their Earth-bound partners. Rose was awful to Mickey, and Clara is just as awful to Danny. And they think it's ok because they get to go on adventures. That's why Amy and Rory worked. I have my issues with Amy, but she couldn't just keep leaving Rory behind.)
Distant Voices was a great time travel story with a fully realized and unique companion. I really felt for Cameron as she was just trying to find a place to make a life. Very well done.
And Field Trip is just a good romp for Osgood, who finally gets to be a real companion to The Doctor! It's also from a time of her life that we don't see much of, both Osgoods being alive.
Next time I would love to have a Bill story. I'm not so keen on a Clara one, to be honest.

Just started 12th Doctor Chronicles, so far it’s very good 😊 Although I would much rather Capaldi voice 12🤔I will admit Dudman’s 12 voice has greatly improved 😊 He seems to have the age and growliness of 12 down better 😀 It’s still not quite the right level of deepness that Capaldi naturally has and it still sounds as though 12 has a stuffy nose 🤔 but it’s much better than it was😊

It’s nice to see so many positive reviews for this and I hope it leads to more Doctor Chronicles, especially for the Eleventh Doctor, but I wonder if they will feel duty bound to do a second volume for the Ninth Doctor next..?

I think they have pretty much said they are doing more. I hope they do more than once a year. A 4 year wait for volume 2 of 12 would be tiresome.

Completed a relisten of this set, I love the classic Companion Chronicles format with their mix of narration and performance and it's a bit ironic that they (the First and Second Doctor CCs) sometimes seem to be trying to move to a more 'modern' full-cast style now. While these stories, from the most recent era BF can bring us, are fully rooted in the established CCs style with lots of narration and description and two actors performing. I think it's a very strong format and I'm really pleased to find it alive and well here.
I enjoyed Jacob Dudman's reading of the Twelve ST 'Dead Media' last year, but to my ears at least he's even better here. I know it's all in the ear of the beholder, but I thought his Capaldi Doctor was very well done and I like his narrator's voice too. And since in this format the narrator plays all other characters except one, it's worth saying that the variety of his other character voices was also impressive.
All four stories had great writing and guest actors and the four very varied settings kept the set fresh all the way through. Alien-infected rats seething through the rain-sodden Crimea was a cracking way to start and Mary Seacole an inspired choice for a 'celebrity historical'. 'War Wounds' was my favourite, an 'alien world M.A.S.H.' story, putting Danny and the Doctor into a situation where they have to work together and come to understand - and respect - each other much more. Samuel Anderson is an excellent audio actor too, isn't he? I do hope Danny gets another voyage in the TARDIS!
The three-Times problem in 'Distant Voices' was another excellent story - I really enjoyed Lizbeth Myles' ST about Aphra Behn and Twelve last year and looked forward to this one; another winner. And then to round things off, Osgood finally gets to go on a jaunt in the TARDIS and it was a lot of fun; two new worlds, some fun 'Bond' style espionage (casino scene included), an invasion to foil and never a dull moment. Again, we must surely have another outing for Osgood next time, or why not do the double and take both Osgoods?
And I'd like Vol 2 next year at the latest please BF! (Agree with elka - I'd love a series 10 story, with Bill. Or if that's not possible, Nardole. Or even... could we hope to have Missy as a guest character?! )

Ooo, just thought that next time we should have a Missy story. I would think that is completely do-able.

Honestly not enjoying this set at all. The attempt at 12 is terrible, which is a shame as I enjoyed his take on 10 and 11. Danny Pink still sucks and I hope to god he is never brought back. Doubtful I will get any follow up set - shame as 12 is the best of the Doctor's since the show came back.

Just finished this set, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised!😊 I had never listened to any of the Chronicles series before and was wary of having an impersonator(Dudman) rather than the genuine article (Capaldi) voice one of my favorite Doctors🤔 Like I said in an earlier post I Dudman’s 12 voice has improved a lot! 😊All the stories and guest actors were good and interesting!😃 I will definitely be picking up the next volumes!😃
Side note: Although I thought Dudman did a decent job as 12 here I still really hope we eventually get Capaldi to play 12 for Big Finish even if it’s just for a few special releases 🤔😀😉

Has any other set divided DU opinion this strongly before? Unscientifically, from reading comments it seems about 1/3 each for: loved it / good / never again!
shallacatop if you have the time would it be possible to add a poll to your thread please? It would be good to see some actual numbers.

I think it stands or it falls with how much you can get around Dudman's attempt at doing the 12th Doctor's voice. I think it is serviceable, and the set is enjoyable. But compared to the 11th Doctor Chronicles, which were amazing, this is just not there.

Distant Voices is a good ‘un. Cameron is a great one-off companion and I liked the timey wimey nature of the story. Dudman’s best impression of the Twelfth Doctor so far. I’m not sure I’d say performance, as I think he’s improving at being a soundalike but doesn’t quite get the intonation or gravitas across. The narration certainly helps the set.

After recent discussions involving how I "rank" releases taking a specific turn towards this box set, I figured I may as well come here and explain what I thought about the release. I'm thinking I might try and comment more often on recent releases too, if only so anyone who might be interested in how I formulate my opinions may understand where I'm coming from (which is probably nobody, but then you can all just ignore the posts I make anyway ). On the whole, this was alright. I don't think any of the stories were particularly memorable but they passed the hours pleasantly enough. I felt the war theme across most of the set limited the scope for stories; I would have preferred more of a thematic mix. I'm also a little disappointed that none of his regular companions appeared in any of the stories like they did in previous Chronicles releases. Dudman's Capaldi impression wasn't super distracting but there were two or three occasions in every episode where he got the voice so wrong that it did take me out of story a bit. There are words that he mispronounces every time they come up and it was becoming slightly annoying, but then his was never going to be a perfect impression so I will cut him some slack. I won't deny that Samuel Anderson gave quite a good performance but that was probably the best bit about his episode, the inevitable retcon spoiling the progression the story provided. I also thought Osgood's characterisation was a little off. This is supposed to be set after all the current UNIT box sets, so the slightly more child-like awe/somewhat lacking independence she displays here doesn't really fit with how Big Finish have developed her character to me (though it's perfectly understandable how other's interpretations of that can differ). My summary would be that if you weren't sure about getting this I probably wouldn't recommend it. It's probably a good purchase if you're a serious fan of the Twelfth Doctor, but it's pretty average Doctor Who release otherwise.

I for one always enjoy reading people's comments. Whether or not I agree with them
The extras mention that the Danny Pink episode is set around the time of 'The Caretaker' and 'Mummy on the Orient Express'. I'd have said after, because although the experiences of 'War Wounds' don't change the Doctor's lasting view of Danny because of the memory wipe, it does change Danny's view of him and possibly helps him with his PTSD too? He's in a war zone again and he takes a different path - I think this fits the less abrasive Danny (as he relates to the Doctor) who we see later in the season.
Completely agree the Osgood we saw in the final story was much more like early TV Osgood, compared with the far more assured Osgood of the UNIT sets. I have an fan-explanation for this - the Doctor took Zygon Osgood with him and she simply hasn't got it right yet. However good their genetics and technology, duplicating a mind as exceptional as Osgood's must be extremely difficult and the process still has a long way to go. (Personally I don't accept the 'perfect mental duplicate' concept of the new series Zygons but that's another matter!)

Fair enough, but on balance I'm not the biggest fan of the Twelfth Doctor, but thought this set was excellent nonetheless.
