Well that’s very deserving of the adult material warning.
Grim material and a selection of suitably grim characters, with some surprising moments of hope for Owen. Andy and Owen’s partnership works well, I will get Corpse Day at some point.

I have somewhat mixed feelings about this release. For what is supposed to be a "very emotional story", I actually found myself bored for the vast majority of it, then mildly confused by the conclusion. I thought it was quite a dark story, but not really emotional in any way. And for all the presence Owen and Andy have in the plot, you could almost (*almost*) remove them and have the story stand on its own. I think I would have liked it more if it hadn't have been a Torchwood story as, for the most part, it really didn't need to be. It's a bit like Class - it didn't need to be a Doctor Who spin-off, and it was almost the sheer fact that it was that always seemed to dragged it back. It would have stood much better on its own two legs, I think. Even with Owen and Andy being a selling point for this story, they're only together for 5-10 minutes, so it's a bit of a letdown on that score as well.
If I had to summarise my views I'd say it has a lot going for it, but sadly nothing quite sticks.

I get where your coming from (why I only gave it 4), its a very Dark and Mature route to take for an outcome in the end that's almost pulpy Sci-Fi.

I really enjoyed this. It's my favourite release since Night of the Fendahl. I like audio Torchwood when it is dark and grimy, scary and weird, and Owen's black humour is an ideal way of communicating/filtering that. The beauty of this range is that they can do a story like Serenity last month, and follow it up with something totally different this month, and for both of those stories to fit comfortably under the TW umbrella.
Really a full-range story, there are three top-notch performances from Siân Phillips (rather a coup, I'd say), Tom Price and of course Burn Gorman (another coup - I'm so pleased he has become a BF regular). Everyone here shines.
The effective nature of this story is mainly because the subject matter is real. Having a planet blown up by the Cybermen might be a terrible thing and a huge dramatic moment (for example), but what this story focuses on has happened in real life, and will continue to happen in real life. And that gives it an emotional jolt, which the writer has dealt with most skillfully. Also, there's a mystery here, an ambiguity that is compelling. The pay-off is fantastical and terrifying. All wrapped up in powerful music and sound design.
The Torchwood range continues apace and is still a BF favourite for me (next month's sounds like a zinger too).

My take on this dark and compelling tale is up at CultBox.

I loved this story. I love the complexity of Owen and agree with @experience1 that the addition of Burn Gorman was wonderful. I never expect a happy ending with Torchwood, and this was as close as we might get. Owen getting a chance to experience being alive, and then moving on with hope rather than anger was a terrific ending for this very dark story.

Phew, wow. I just finished listening to this and loved it. Holy. Just an incredible release. Bleak, moody, creepy as all hell. This has immediately shot up to be one of my favourite ever Torchwood stories.

Question please for anyone in the know: are monthly TWs particularly stand-alone? Or are they better experienced having listened to previous TW monthly releases? Cheers There is a loose thread running through the first few (very loose), but the range is designed to be standalone.

A while since I listened to this one, but I remember it well. Quite a grim tale. But I always enjoy anything with Andy Davidson. He's a great character.
