The Kingmaker main gripe for me wasn’t humour but just the Doctor being involved in the publishing of Doctor Who and the blah blah.It was a kind of fourth wall scenario if that’s the right term.. I think that was meant to be part of the humor too - it did make me laugh, even though as a story detail I was only able to take it about as seriously as I could take the Fourth Doctor's violin playing. :-)

Hello again.
The Kingmaker is very reminiscent of an early Sixties comedy historical like The Romans but there is a serious story behind the humour. Richard III is presented as a figure of great intelligence and the 'solution' to the Princes in the Tower mystery is an interesting one. The cast is excellent particularly Stephen Beckett and Arthur Smith and the regulars are superb really throw themselves into this adventure.
The Pirates again has a terribly serious story behind the Gilbert and Sullivan facade. Bill Oddie's Red Jasper is not hamming it up. He is dangerously unstable. Charming one minute and murderous and deadly the next. The Doctor has to use all his guile and ingenuity to manage him.
Boom Bang a Bang, okay this one is for those weird fans who enjoyed Season 24 otherwise known as the panto season. It is considerably better than most of that season and would have been a hilarious interlude before the more serious Dragonfire.
The Doctor is starting to use his scheming mind to infiltrate the crew and solve the crime. Mel is really funny in this. Yes some of the humour is over the top and yet the Agatha Christie style mystery is well written. I also liked the spoof Deep Space Nine style diary entries.
For me the beauty of the Doctor Who format particularly on audio is that you can tell literally any sort of story you like. While some fans like hard sci-fi stories, others like gothic horror, others prefer historical stories, some like a good old Dalek story while some fans like the experimental stories or the humorous ones just to break things up.
Now there is a whole NuWhoniverse to explore too. To quote the Sarah Jane Adventures 'and the story goes on forever...'

I don’t think I’ll ever be listening to The Ultimate Adventure again. It’s too long to just be a novelty and the songs aren’t great. The behind the scenes was more interesting, exploring how this show came to be. Even so, I will not be revisiting.

The Kingmaker i know has a great story...its getting through my prejudices to finish it as the set up just well ,annoys me. Am sure one day i will really totally enjoy and find Nekromantia great fun(ok thats a step to far given most of its reviews) But better the writers try and fail than not to try at all

The Boy That Time Forgot. It should really be forgotten. This was one that Nick Briggs actually caused a stir with by talking negatively about it in Vortex. I wonder what it would be like with actually Matthew in the edit? I have given it more than one listen though ok two listens lol...at least i tried

"Doctor Who and the Pirates"; ended up with it because I always bought by subscription. It's cheaper, after all.
But I cannot stand musicals in general (other than "The Book of Mormon"), and I really don't like the idea of Who in musical form...

Undercuts the impact of Earthshock when in the back of your brain you're thinking that he lives on to become the frakking Scorpion King.

I loved the Scorchies episode of Jago and Litefoot and squirmed ar first at having to listen to it in the Pirates But as I said then it all came together quite cleverly IMO.

I think it's not a form that should be used every week. But Fanfare for the Common Men is an example of Musical Who that works a treat. Musicals aren't to everyone's taste. I like them because in a good musical the music adds to the drama or humour. Book of Mormon is very interesting as is Avenue Q which an adult version of The Muppets. I think it would be interesting in NuWho to meet a musician for a change instead of a writer. There are some great stories about composers, musicians and singers to be told. Any ideas?

I've nothing against undercutting the impact of Earthshock, but {Spoiler} undercutting the heroism of Adric's farewell by having him come back as a letch is what's going to keep me from listening to that one ever again.

I'm NOT listening to 'Nekromantia' even though it should have been next up in my 'fill all the gaps in my MR listening' order.
I enjoyed 'Bang-Bang-a-Boom' to ridiculously high levels last night and I don't want to spoil it!

See, the main thing about Fanfare that bothered me was the "American crook" accent.
I wouldn't really count that as a musical. 5 and Nyssa don't burst spontaneously into song...

An excellent point, especially since, in my opinion, Adric had precious little else to be proud of.
