Interesting not Knock out great
1st story standard Sci FI concept
Middle 2 stories are the best "(Name of the Rose" in Space followed by "Crown Court/ Judge Rinder" in Space.
I don't like Luke and I'm not sure why but as a result it brings down what should've been the best Ep because the framing device of it is very well done.
This a definitely a "Your Mileage may Vary" Release

Colony of Strangers - James Goss
This is very very atmospheric tale and totally loving it Alex is as brilliant as ever see above the reception is kind of lukewarm but am loving No Doctors to the rescue,No Tardis no gimmicks and a very bleak soundscape .

Now onto story number three and am having to admit am truly enjoying these stories and have already scheduled relistens to them already.I love Rivers character and the stories are diverse and interesting and as usual well acted. I know it’s not others cup of tea but am all for non gimmick Doctor crossovers much as I love them this is giving River very much room to breathe as an independent woman and it would be easy to clone stories such as Bernice but they have tended to steer away from that so far.

Carnival of Angels-Roy Gill
Geez what can I say as a lover of Raymond Chandler/Philip Marlowe type stories this one ticked all my boxes and for me elegant glamorous pistol toting River just fits so well into this era ... more of River in the 40s the 50s and even the swinging 60s as the detective. Totally love this one.

I thought Colony of Strangers was good. Atmospheric, a small cast and a nice alien take on a Nordic / Scandi noir.
I did think Karl’s accent became grating as the story went on and the hot drink gag was increasingly frustrating. I understand it’s a cliche of the genre, but it was used so much that it felt as though it was going to become a plot point.
It’s so refreshing to have a River Song story without any returning elements. I saw James Goss was writing and my initial concern was that it'd be crammed full of continuity references to compensate, as he often does, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I think the next set should continue in the same vein River is such a strong character in her own right and it’s nice to know what she is up to when not with hubby lol I suppose it will all be a matter of sales though.People like their gimmicks but I found this so refreshingly different and have totally enjoyed on relisten there’s plenty of mileage in the character and Alex seems to enjoy them.

I thought this was a really strong set, I enjoyed all of the stories. It proves that River is a strong enough character that she doesn’t need to rely on having the Doctor appear in her sets. I hope BF do more River sets without the Doctor involved.

Just finished Colony of Strangers. I really loved this. Very atmospheric and the characters were great. I loved all the deadpan acting, it really added to the suspense. And River was very well used, too. I also thought the plot was quite clever. So this is basically {Spoiler} A plot right in between previous BF stories „Truant“ (Benny) and „Whisper“ from Ravenous 4. It certainly kept me guessing since I trusted the authors not to come up with a Nordic version of the Bodysnatchers. And I was right, they indeed did come up with another option. Great work.

And finished the second story! I love how atmospheric these pieces are this time round. I was missing this from Volume 6. There, I just never really felt as if I was "there". This time, I feel much more "sucked in" if this makes any sense. Yes, the plot of the second story is not quite as clever as the previous one (although both deal with sci-fi tropes that have been done by BF before), I still enjoy the world building and the characters. Volume 7 is certainly better than the previous one so far (well, apart from that duet with Jago, which was just one of it's kind).

Abbey of Heretics is a straightforward story with an intriguing mystery throughout. At its heart the story is a character piece and that’s where it shines - a good guest cast and some interesting worldbuilding. Lovely stuff.

Yes Volume 1 was one of my favourites too and this one and The Peter Davison one are my trop favourites
