Finished the third story last night. For me, this was the most fun story so far. I loved the Barrister character and all the humor thrown in. Although, it was very clear from the start {Spoiler} that River indeed was the perpetrator of the crime, for protecting the universe from a very warmongering species and helping another one of her girlfriends along

So after reading some of the positive reviews I decided to give this a go. Just finished the first story, although the plot was quite predictable it was fun & atmospheric.

So, 2nd story done. Abbey of Heretics is brilliant, ticks all my boxes. Halfway through & this feels like the style of storytelling I fell in love with in Volume 1.

Barrister to the Stars is a lot of fun. A great concept with some cracking dialogue that’s just really well executed. It’s the little things like the timey wimey elements, the pastiche of the English legal system and the bonkers aliens. The set plays to Alex’s strengths as River, this one in particular, and it’s so good to hear.

Brilliant stuff. I just kept waiting for a final musical note as one of the roundels grows larger and opens into the cinematic adventure that awaits.

Just finished the set. For me, the last story was sadly the weakest of the set. It just did not come together for me, the "case", the use of the Angels, the jump-scare sound effects, the accents, and the freak-show characters. I just felt that all these elements have been done before, and then done better. River was still brilliant, don't get me wrong, and the story is not bad, but compared to what came before, the bar has been set pretty high.
So to sum up- I liked the third story best, it was the most fun and the barrister character was great. This is followed by the first and the second story.
Taken together, this was an entertaining set. It did however not quite reach the brilliance that was Volume 4 and 5 which remain my favorites.

I am trying to ration this but cannot, Barrister to the Stars was great. Loved the characters in particular David Rintoul's performance.

I think I'll be in the minority about disliking the Barrister story. I just thought the whole thing was way too contrived and the OTT characters were just meh to me. Thought the rest of the set was OK though.

It struck me while listening that yes, we have seen one bit of this done before.
I have a fan-theory now that part of the reason the timelines were so tangled around New York at that time was: the War Master was also interested in an alien 'freak-show' on Coney Island at that same period in WM 3.2 'The Coney Island Chamaeleon' and we know he'd been frequently coming and going from that place and Time into the Time War.
Both shows closed down during their stories, so I think one followed directly from the other and the characters moved to new jobs under new management - probably the Master story came first because he couldn't have missed detecting the host if it had been stirring while he was there. Or maybe he did find it and it amused him to leave it as a surprise for humanity!

Actually, BF have made that sort of semi-link before and not mentioned it in the sets - I think it was Scott Handcock posted on here that we could imagine River 5.4 (with the War Master) fitting into War Master Vol 3 between eps 2 & 3. Perhaps this was another such 'sequence'? Or perhaps it is now even if it wasn't intended to be? The Time War can do that!

All done. Sadly the last story was a bit of a mess, silly accents, badly plotted. The more times the Weeping Angels appear it seems the writers add unnecessary elements to their mythology.
But overall this was a great boxset.

So Glad you attempted it and two out of three ain’t bad(or 3 out of 4).Really enjoyed this break away from the WHO and i did enjoy the Weeping Angels story though more the style of the story telling rather than the Angels .More stories From her detective days and individual travelling.

Good stuff from all, I'll be getting this set from the power of my fellow DUers recommendations.

I agree with the sentiment about Carnival of Angels being the weakest of the set. It’s good, but there’s a lot going on that doesn’t always mesh together and it’s consciously trying not to step on the toes of Angels Take Manhattan; enough to make River aware, but trying to be lower stakes. I liked the continuity of having Luke return, as it’s good to give River a crew of sorts and a recurring one has been sorely lacking in this range. It’s great to hear more from River in her Melody Malone persona and I’d love to hear more.
I like the comments about this being linked to The Coney Island Chameleon from The War Master. I thought the same when listening and enjoy the idea as it makes that story feel less throwaway than what it is.
Brilliant set on the whole. Alex is in her element, each story is enjoyable, especially the middle two, and there’s lots to love. More please!

Have they hinted at somewhere if there might be more River volumes in the works? Early planning stages maybe? Rumors?
