Hooray! Two more volumes! Do we know if they're set during or after Series 1? Really sad to learn about the recasting though, Vivian and Katherine were wonderful additions to the original cast. And wow! Blair Mowat's writing a script!

Set within Series One, but with a crap ton of new writers. Recasts for me are fine as long as I enjoy the actor in the role, but that’s only something I can judge when I hear. I’m very excited nonetheless and I will be buying the limited edition CDs as I did with the first two volumes.

Disappointed by the recasts but suppose it’s fair enough if the actors don’t want to return - recasts are better than having nothing at all! Looking forward to these as I really enjoyed the first two volumes.

It's odd given that the episodes in the first two boxes had two main actors a piece - you'd think they'd just avoid Quill and Tanya until Vol. 5/6/whatever... Maybe both actors said "no more forever".

Bit unfortunate that some have declined to come back. I wonder if that’s why it’s taken so long to get these new volumes made, trying to negotiate/convince them to return. Still, Dirvla Kirwan is a solid choice.

It is disappointing to lose those cast members, but it sounds like the recasting was out of necessity and if that’s what it took to get us new Class stories, then fair enough.
Interesting selection of writers, this seems to be a big injection of new talent. I will probably wait for some more details before ordering, but sounding promising so far.

Well, recasting sure sucks. I'm not interested in recasts for actors who are still alive, so I'll pass on these. All the best to the replacements though, I can't fault them for taking a job, and I can't fault Big Finish for finding an alternative when the previous actors say no/are busy.

The recasting a bit of an odd one, I think. I’ve always got the impression that part of the shows cult following is thanks to its cast, interacting with fans online and being one of those rare things where its fandom is almost like a family. To recast one of the main 5 and then also recast the most popular character seems a little off.
It’s even more odd given the first two series had story structures where they didn’t feature all the cast. The wording in the article suggests that the scheduling didn’t work out rather than the two of them actually declining to reprise their roles. Again, odd.
The most interesting bit of news is the array of new writers, including Blair Mowat!

That does seem to imply that they just outright refused to return rather than scheduling issues. All in all an odd situation, but hopefully the recasts will work well.

Volumes 1 & 2 were pretty good actually, so I’m up for this. In fact, I just hope we get volumes 5 & 6!

Is this the first time Big Finish has recast a living actor (apart from the First Doctor Adventures, which feel like a different case)?

Well there was Adric that one time, but that was only ever gonna be a one off. I guess you could technically say that Jacob Dudman played the Twelfth Doctor in that recent short trip, but it’s a debatable topic. They recast that girl in the 8DAs who ended up being played by Kerry Godliman in her last appearance but again it’s not the same thing. so yeah, I think is this the first time BF have recast living actors in a full cast release that involves original actors as well. Obviously it’s happened quite a lot outside of Doctor Who, but then usually those are reimaginings anyway and don’t involve the original cast.

They've also got him doing Tennant (even though they work with Tennant), Matt Smith, and soon Capaldi, in the Chronicles range. That's a lot closer to a recast than a Short Trip (which I would call narration).

Yeah but Dead Media is written in the form of the Doctor speaking directly to the audience through a podcast, so it’s more a performance than a narration, whereas the Chronicles will be narrated.

Is this the first time Big Finish has recast a living actor (apart from the First Doctor Adventures, which feel like a different case)? The most noticeable BF recast of a living actor that I can think of is Yasmin Bannerman replacing Josette Simon as Dayna in Blake's 7. As far as I am aware Josette simply declined a return to the role.

I'm not surprised Katherine Kelly has passed... her career is probably on the up. She was in Netflix's Criminal recently and she's completed a film too.
