Overall a very strong season opener which set's up a very interesting arc, i wonder why the Doctor couldn't sense the Master in this story? Maybe this is a Master from another universe or does stealing O's body mean that the Master is out of regenerations again?
I agree with Davy G (very rare i know) even though i wasn't a fan of Gomez Missy/Master incarnation it did at least try to give the character a redemptive arc, to retcon that story for another pantomime Master would be a huge step backwards for the character.
I look forward to Sunday's part 2.
My rating. 4/5.

One of the best Cliffhangers to a Two-parter I've seen in a while.
Also "SNAP!" lol

It was... OK. Which seems to be the main state of Chibnall Who. It shouldn't really be a surprise when you consider that "OK" was generally the best you could say about his scripts in his pre-Showrunner days.
It is funny though that after a year of insisting that the show must be made for everybody, come series two it's straight back into the old stuff with the Master. My one hope is that he'll tell the companions (I refuse to use the other word) some hard truths about what the Doctor is really like; rather than the happy-clappy (half)human My Little Pony she acts as.

Just under 4.9million overnight viewers - BBC's best of the day, nothing got over 5mill on any channel. Not too far off what Resolution got last year on overnights (5.1) so it's pretty much as you were.
Seems New Year's isn't the same juggernaut it was a few years ago, conversely Christmas has been going downhill ratings-wise for the last few years but the Xmas Gavin And Stacey reunion has got SIXTEEN million views after 7 days which is insane. Just shows, the death of event family TV is not real if the show in question is one the public are hungry for. Dracula didn't do great guns but I think a lot of people, like Luther last year, are waiting till the weekend to binge it as it's 3 eps over 3 nights. A Christmas Carol added 2.5million on +7s, so (and I know we say this every season but it gets more and more true each run), people are watching a lot of telly still...just when they want more than when they're told to.
Who added a few million of +7s in the last run, and for Resolution. Doing so this time would bring it to 7million-ish, maybe a bit more with solid buzz and the twist getting trending. If the series keeps up that kinda level it's going to be on telly for a long time yet.

I know it's a vain hope but I wish people would ignore everything but the 28 day consolidated figure because in 2019, sorry 2020, overnights are utterly meaningless.

As I said above it tends to be the +7s that are the bulk of the story - the overwhelmingly vast majority of catchups are in the first week. But solid numbers are to be welcomed as it solidifies the show and the higher the overnight, the higher the +7.

I'll be honest, I'm not sure where all the positive vibes are coming from. While I don't think it's Jodie's fault, this doctor is bloody awful. Did absolutely nothing of interest in this episode. So passive. Wobbles can now play basketball, can he? Great. I literally don't know any of the names of the companions. That's how little they have impacted on me. Wobbles?

Oh minor thing that was good but didn't land right
Forged Police Secondments for Yaz, as cover for the absences, good idea, but the Sargant's response should be "Yeath no Problem" or a cheeky "I'll have to apply for promotion as I'm obviously training you so well for all these Secondments" He shouldn't threaten to refuse, as far he knows its orders coming from superior officers.

So with first UNIT and now Torchwood gone, Chibnall's really trying to drive BF out of business. I hear that Episode 3 mentions that Strax, Vastra and Jenny are all dead.

Not necessarily. Was it well-known that Torchwood had been restarted by Gwen? It could be that MI6 and the Doctor just aren't aware that it's been restarted. And... {Spoiler} Torchwood is essentially "gone" by the end of GAU3, or, on the run at the very least.

It was just a joke!
But it does seem that Chibnall's trying to force knowledge of aliens back in the box again, when it would be better to just avoid the discussion instead.

I've been watching Doctor Who for something like 17 years. When I watched the Classic Series I had a reference book telling me what monster/enemy was in each story and a summary of the story's events, so I always knew what was coming. When it came to the New Series, I had the Yana twist spoiled in advance, and I'd guessed the Missy twist by the end of Deep Breath. Any other monster/character return has pretty much been announced in advance or was somehow spoiled for me (even the Tennant regeneration in The Stolen Earth was ruined because promo photos for The Next Doctor were out on the show's official website by the time TSE aired in Australia...), so despite having been watching the show for so long I have never had a Doctor Who rug-pull experience. I kid you not, my jaw was hanging open from the moment the reveal came until the credits started! So this is what it's like to be totally wrong footed by my favourite TV show! I may be 22, but in that moment I was 7 years old. I was way more excited about this than I'm prepared to admit (and almost an hour later I'm still not sure my heart rate has settled...). Chris Chibnall, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me my "this is why I love this show" moment I can't tell you how pleased I am I don't have to wait a full week for Part Two!

I thought that the basketball scene was actually a very nice one for the character.
He can’t magically play basketball well now that he travels with the Doctor, his dyspraxia hasn’t just magically disappeared and it’s still something he struggles with.
But his friend pointed out that before he wouldn’t even play. That shows where he’s come from episode one where he would flat out refuse to keep trying to ride the bike due to embarrassment and fear of failure. It just shows how not just travelling with the Doctor but also the loss of Grace has changed him and turned him into a far more positive person.
