Witchcraft, alien landings, and a Government cover-up in Rendelsham Forest...all presented via a fictitious podcast, tape recordings, phone call clips, etc.
And it is very creepy indeed. And on BBC Sounds over 10 half-hour episodes.

Is it at all connected with the Lovecraft story of the same name? Or the similarity in the title simply coincidence?

Should be, it's a sequel to their podcast-journalism take on "Charles Dexter Ward". Look it up on Itunes, it's all in a single Feed. I haven't heard the new series yet, but the first one is very very good indeed.

The sequel is very good, the first batch of episodes “Charles Dexter Ward” were so well done, and the next batch are just as strong. Nicola Walker is also back, and it’s such a great spooky tale.
Does it follow Lovecraft? Not really, but i love how this blends the ‘true crime podcast’ genre of Serial or other ones, and does it’s own thing.
Big thumbs up from me!

I finished The Case of Charles Dexter Ward yesterday and it was brilliant. As others have said the adaptation through the true-crime podcast style, along with the performances and the sound design, all help create an incredibly gripping audio world. Can't wait to start with the sequel.

Can't wait to start with the sequel. I started on the sequel, and only lasted 2 episodes due to the genuinely creepy (ok slightly terrifying) nature of it. The abandoned creepy house on the edge of the forest did for me. Excellently done though.

Yes, series 2 is a *lot* more intense than series 1.

Third season starts soon, right? Shadows of Innsmouth is one of my favorite Lovecraft stories, and excited to see how this one goes. Hoping they are still able to record and it’s not delayed due to the general crapness of 2020!

Don't click on this unless you've finished the second series (previously podcasted, now playing on Radio 4 on Sundays), but

Well, I eked this out over Christmas and have finished it today. It's definitely the last series of this iteration of Julian Simpson's interconnected dramas, but the door is left propped wide open for some more in some format or other. Possibly even on television?
(Although I hope that Radio 4 Extra go back to the very beginning - before "Charles Dexter Ward", before "Mythos" - and play the whole saga from the very start.

Series 2 ("The Whisperer in Darkness") is being repeated daily on Radio 4 next week. And if you've heard the third series, Radio 4 Extra is currently repeating the Oliver Postgate-starring "Elastic Planet". This is a great series anyway, but 'The Train' is particularly amusing if you're familiar with {Spoiler}the Deep Ones. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/b007js6h
EDIT: There's obviously something sinister going on at Radio 4. "Reluctant Persuaders", of all things, has just gone (quite literally) all "King in Yellow".

Final series "The Shadow over Innsmouth" starts tomorrow on Radio 4, and as the Radio Times warns, this isn't a good jumping-on point.
