A question to everyone following the series.
I have so far only gotten the Time War installments and quite enjoyed those. I am not really sold on the prospect of political intrigue, especially if it is done along the lines of "The Deadly Assassin", this is why I never got into the Gallifrey series.
However, I really enjoyed the latest War Master set, especially the bits playing out {Spoiler}
On alternative timelines of Gallifrey, showing very different sides to the different characters. This is why Gallifrey series IV has caught my eye- some of it sounds a bit like the Mirror Universe from Star Trek.
Any thoughts on if series IV is worth getting on it's own?

Absolutely. The first story features Mary Tamm as another version of the first Romana, the second features Colin Baker as a very different Timelord to the one we all know, the third features Geoffrey Beevers and Katy Manning playing characters as far removed from the Master and Jo Grant as possible and the fourth while featuring no classic series guest star lays the groundwork for Series V. As Mark said, if you like the idea of the Mirror Universe, then this will be right up your street. 😊 EDIT : 3/3/20 Oops. Totally forgot of course that Carole Ann Ford is in the fourth story. Quite how I forgot is another matter entirely..

That's interesting, I hadn't considered jumping into Gallifrey at IV. I suppose if you're already familiar with the core characters -- Romana, Narvin, Leela, Braxiatel -- from later releases, you wouldn't be lost. You might miss or be left wondering by a few references, but probably not too many.
Yeah, I think largely you'd be okay. And there's some fun stuff in Gallifrey IV through VI!

i loved the interior artwork for this - with them all being contemporary pictures it felt like a box set to an imaginary new TV Series.

Well, what can I say... Thank you all for your recommendations. I think you guys sold this to me. Although, the Brigadier had me already at "Colin Baker playing a very different time lord" and Katy Manning... I do LOVE these two. And I also really enjoy mirror universe stories. I have also seen that on the website, the release comes up to a whopping 6 hours of run-time (I assume that some of it will be musical score and interviews, however, that is a loooong release, I guess it will certainly be value for money. Especially with the all-star cast. I am going to take the plunge and check this out.

Yes River definitely am listening again to them all this morning the River Stories and definitely loving this set. Each has quite a distinct atmosphere and not contrived as the other sets,well apart from set 1 which I personally have as one of my favourites of the run. Some straight storytelling giving River a life so erased from the Doctor is a smart idea

At the time it was quite controversial because it was so different to what had gone before, but I think that was due more to customer expectations and assumptions about what it would be like. Perhaps BF's pre-release publicity could have done more to manage those expectations, but that's easy to say with hindsight.
With the passage of time however, it can be judged more fairly on its own merits and IMHO it stands up very well. Stories 2 and 3 were my faves.

I would think to be honest you would enjoy the range from the beginning i did not think i would but its very addictive and well acted with some good plot devices and enriches the WHO universe. There are also some minor plot points which are far better absorbed with the other series behind you 🤪

Yes, I understand that I will miss out on some plot threads. But right now I just do not feel in the mood for contrived political drama.

Well, the first story was alright. The regulars are really great. But it did not grab me as much as I hoped and this was the reason I paused on this for a while.
Today I made an attempt with the second story, Disassembled. This was simply delicious. I loved the story playing out in the vein of the mirror universe stories we know from Star Trek. This is everything I had hoped for from a mirror Universe story. The other universe counterparts were done wonderfully and believably. Adding a sinister backstory to Brax too was a nice touch, and having him get into some severe sibling rivalry... But Colin as Lord Burner was really selling this. This really played nicely with the expectations and suspicions of the listener and was done quite clever. I wish we could get a bit more of Lord Burner....
Now I have started the third story. Love the bickering and banter between the regulars...

Finished the third story. Well, we get some nice Werewolf versus Vampires vibe and the regulars continue to be a joy. I also rather liked Geoffrey Beevers and Katy Manning. And Leela gets a chance to be proper feral. However, the story itself was not doing a lot for me (I am not into vampires to begin with and also never was a fan of these old horror movies). I also thought that the atmosphere and the sound design were a bit lacking... I somehow did not really feel there. So no, this does not reach the awesomeness that was the second story.
