Another solid historical side-step all in all.

Nice atmospheric eerie feel, very grey area character motivations Strong performances all round
Having heard the interesting and somewhat provocative real historical fact breakdown in the BTH Interview I'd be intrigued to hear a Prince Albert focused DW or TW with or without Queen Victoria

Prince Albert would be interesting, Tooth and Claw did seem to imply he had something of an interest in the supernatural so an audio focusing on him could work.

This is creepy and atmospheric. I love the remix of the theme tune! Also, the characterization of Victoria is great. An ambiguous mix of bada$$, aloof and indomitable. There is no doubt that she is the real monster, who is doing abominable things, but are her goals really evil?

If you enjoyed this one, you should listen to "The Victorian Age" with Victoria and Captain Jack. You can currently get it for 2.99£ and it also has the remix of the theme tune.

Loved this!! And I wasn't looking forward to it since I didn't really like The Victorian Age. As has been said, atmospheric and very character driven.
I loved the character of Duleep Singh. Not a hero or villain, just a wounded and deeply troubled soul. Paul Bazely was outstanding. And I really do love that theme.

Very atmospheric, three excellent perfomances, great sound design and I really liked the bits of genuine history that James Goss worked into the story (with two real historical characters.)
But I did struggle with this TW Victoria - she was made into a mistress of global manipulation at the level of Seven or Billis Manger and I just couldn't get my head properly round that Victoria and the contrast with the reclusive elderly woman who spent decades in mourning, hidden away in the Highlands or on the Isle of Wight and using her mourning (as many suspected at the time and they comment in the extras) to avoid having to bother performing even the basic constitutional duties of the monarchy.
She dominated and controlled her family and household certainly, so that did work through well into her manipulation of the Maharajah, but far from running the Empire (which as a constitutional monarch she had no real power to do anyway), for many years she couldn't even be bothered to turn up to open Parliament or read the Queen's Speech in person (a speech written of course by the politicians who'd won the latest election, not her.) So I found it very hard to believe in her in this fictionalised form, running TW hands-on and piloting launches around the Channel in old age. I didn't mind at all in 'The Victorian Age' where she was an equally impossible version of Victoria, because that was a fun romp with Jack and so imo anything goes in that sort of story.
TV Who & BF have done a similar thing with Churchill of course, but he really did have an adventurous and dangerous globe-trotting career as a young man, so it's easy to imagine that he would have been up for taking on aliens and the supernatural later in life. Queen Vic, not so much.

Well, they kind of discuss the approach to Queen Victoria in the extras. I think I get where they are coming from. And it is much for fun and entertaining to have a scheming spider in the background than a mourning widow who cannot get her act together...

Yes, for dramatic purposes I agree, much more entertaining. The problem was mine in that in a serious story I couldn't get my head round the difference between the two Victorias. (Now there's a potential TW title guys: The Two Victorias )

This story was fascinating. I love when some really history gets sprinkled in with my stories. I am also thrilled that they plan to do more with Victoria. Would love to also see the Victorian Torchwood — Alice Guppy, Charles Gaskell, etc.

What an amazing atmosphere this has. A real good build as we progress through the story. Gripping in fact. The unique location, and backstory around that, coupled with the incredibly strong three actors, just a joy to listen to. I hope we get more Victorian Torchwood following on from this.

Agreed, the extras seemed to say that Victoria wanted to rule the world via the dynastic marriages of her descendants - not really an accurate statement.
Also the extras say the forts were built in 1860s due to fear of French invasion by Napoleon's son, whereas of course France in the 1860s was ruled by Napoleon's nephew, Napoleon III

Just finishing it with the tour of the sea fort in the interviews. I had no idea they existed. Quite impressive use of actual history in this.
