I've just wrapped up Series Three of The Omega Factor for the second time and am still sad there won't be any more and I wondered if some of the poorer selling ranges might have had better results with a more well known or inspired guest cast. Although imo The Omega Factor was very well performed throughout would the pull of an actor like Derek Jacobi (as a Drexel type character perhaps) meant a wider audience?
I guess the sales of the Originals range, which is guest star heavy might be more telling on that front. I seem to recall them saying Phantom of the Opera under performed and that had Anna Massey amongst the guest stars. A few people are suggesting Christopher Eccleston could make his way into Big Finish via their Classics range. Would an appearance in an adaptation of something like To Kill A Mockingbird entice buyers who would normally purchase such an item?
Has this approach pulled listeners in in the past? I know Samuel Barnett was a big pull for me in investigating Cicero, and I am thinking of giving Fortitude a listen because I am a fan of Rowena Cooper.

If Julie Walters was ever in anything BF did my mother would probably buy it. She always thinks anything with Julie Walters in it is good.

Well I guess having a big name in an audio helps.
I bought Treasure Island because Tom Baker was in it, but I was interested in the story anyway. His inclusion simply confirmed the purchase for me.
Put Tom Baker in a Shakespeare adaption would not entice me to buy it.

I can't honestly say I've ever dipped into ranges I don't normally buy just because actors I like are in them, but that's true of my media habits in general, I'm more writer/director driven than actor driven, and even that is only a very small handful of people.
So I mean, maybe it would help to draw in more of BF's customer base, but speaking for myself, no.

I tend to get sucked in by a good blurb, which can often lead to disappointment tbf.

Yes Hale and Pace ,Ken Dodd,Richard Briers.....I almost switch Who off because of the guest stars Am not convinced it would entice me...Roger Allam perhaps I am pulled in by hearing a rich vocal delivered well on audio I don’t care about how famous the person is as am trying not to envisage how the actor looks but how powerful they deliver the lines...
Alexander Valhos-good looking man,yes people might buy for his looks or his star quality but he has a great vocal but so distinctive that it has to be used sparingly. David Selby from Dark Shadows -give him a Doctor Who Geez that man could do wonders as a MASTER. Susan Sullivan from Dark Shadows yep I would buy a Doctor Who with her in it...want to rejuvenate the Rani she’s the vocal.

If a writer you admired wrote a series for Big Finish originals, or contributed to a range you haven't much interest in would it entice you to explore. Perhaps if not at the pre-order stage but perhaps when that item was in a sale maybe?

I cannot abide John Barrowman and so have cut of an entire spin off as a consequence. Trinny and Suzanna in Bad came close to me switching off as well. Alexander Vlahos is a really interesting point. He is a beautiful looking man, but that voice and that presence push it along even more - he's enhanced every range he's been in. The use of 'sexy' people to sell an audio series is a bit of an oxymoron really. I remember when they announced Philip Oliver was joining the main range back in 2004, and being both thrilled and disappointed because you wouldn't be able to see him. As for other cast pulls - I bought Dorian 2.5 because Lalla Ward was in it - I just wanted to hear her in a different role. Alex Kingston in Transference was a pull factor, although the series turned out to be a mild disappointment. John Hurt was definitely a pull for The Invisible Man.

Perhaps if not at the pre-order stage but perhaps when that item was in a sale maybe? Still no, honestly. I'll admit I was intrigued by Damaged Goods due to Russell T Davies' involvement, but that was a range I already wanted. If he wrote for say, Blake's 7, I can't say I'd buy it.

John Hurt in The Invisible Man, sure. Vlahos in Hamlet is probably something I'll check out down the road too.
But if, say, Ian McKellen or Christopher Eccleston or Olivia Colman was in an episode of, I dunno, Terrahawks? I don't think that would be the thing to sway me.
(I did listen to the one Dark Shadows story with Dorian - but narrative crossovers will always get me!)

Dark Shadows I definitely got started with because of the guest stars. It was Matthew Waterhouse in The Creeping Fog, and Alexander Vlahos/Mr Gray in The Darkest Shadow that started me off. I've also listened to The Devil Cat mainly to hear Sarah Sutton in another role.

Speaking as a Canadian - not all the names that BF are going to be as widely known in North America, so that doesn't tend to be a factor (at least for me) in deciding which products to purchase.

I don’t think I’ve ever brought anything based on the cast, even give my love for Miranda Raison as a performer just putting her in the cast is not an automatic buy for me. I’ve fought stuff out of my interest zone based on characters (the River versus the Masters boxset despite not liking River as a character, Ravenous because of the Candyman despite having given up on long form McGann part way through Doom Colation).
