The Ollistra conundrum is simply... How can Big Finish use the character when we know that Carolyn Pickles regenerates into Jacqueline Pearce before the Time War and Jacqueline Pearce is with the War Doctor. I did wonder if Ollistra could be a Time Lord who alternates their appearance, so that every odd numbered incarnation is Carolyn and ever even numbered is Jacqueline. Then we could have Ollistra played by Carolyn Pickles before the War, during the War and after the War, but as a different Incarnation of Ollistra each time. I mean, I'd be happy if they keep her in the background and acting through envoys such as Veklin. We could still see a new regeneration down the line in Gallifrey Time War, while keeping the War Doctor present in the background. I still want to see the lead-up to Day of the Doctor/The End of Time from the pov of Romana/Narvin/Ollistra/Rasmus/etc. So many people have said it before but... War Doctor Companion Chronicles. Easy enough to have the Next Ollistra narrating the story of how she regenerated. Then one of the General's stories, one of Leela's and maybe another pre-War companion, who knows...

I just get the impression that Big Finish are trying to avoid narrated releases, apart from the short trips. Marketing a release as a Full Cast audio adventure is more preferable as I would imagine they sell better. Because of all the other production costs that go into a release, the fact there are a few less actors involved seldom has an impact on the selling price. Although nothing has been announced as yet, their were comments that the next Doctor Chronicles with Jacob Dudman would be different and he would be playing the Doctor more, which I took to mean less narration.

Having just finished a War Master relisten, I think I prefer him in “other people’s adventures” to his own. Under the Viscoid and Master of Callous are “Doctor Who stories where the Doctor doesn’t turn up”, he’s sublime in Weapon of Choice from a River Song, masterful in Code Silver/Msster of Worlds etc, but Rage and Antigenesis seemed to fall flat.

Happy Birthday to Derek Jacobi! Would be great to release Hearts of Darkness today, wouldn’t it...?

Ha, definitely a silhouette of Jacobi's Master mid-Time War (hence the flames) - sorry to those wanting an early Master... Really i could have swore the hunching figure was similar to Jame's Pose on the cover of The First Doctor Adventures ah well still an impressive animation

Oh, I got confused by silhouettes - so much lovely detail in this trailer, from graphics through to the sound design. War Master: past, present...

Well, that's perked me up a bit! At the moment it's downloading particularly slowly on my Mac, probably due to my ongoing issues with the iCloud (I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said it's taken almost an hour, and maybe another before it finally decides it wants to 'allow' me to copy it to my dictaphone...).
I'm not due to go into work today, so am looking forward to listening to this throughout this afternoon.
Edit: Due to it running slow, I had to restart my Mac, but it is now (finally) copying to my dictaphone... (Checks wrist) It's only taken (almost) two hours!

Only listened to The Edge of Redemption so far, and it's very much the first part of one bigger story, so will reserve full judgement until I've finished. However, I'm impressed so far and it's already a significant improvement on Anti-Genesis. I love the Master's motley crew and the Star Wars-esque way he gathers them, the building premise, the insights of the Time War on other worlds and civilisations and the theme tune stings throughout.
Can't wait to get stuck into the rest of the set!

Well finally finished listening to Hearts of Darkness it was done really well, i was really surprised by episode 2's ending {Spoiler} Where its revealed that The Master and The Doctor have swapped bodies and yeah the next two stories Paul McGann gives a good performance {Spoiler} As The Mind Swapped Master i love that episode 4's ending has the full extended War Master theme from the Trailer and Speaking of Trailer Killing Time sounds really promising i did feel there was some missed opportunities with some characters
{Spoiler} I Feel the fate of The Mind swapped Girl with The Bird was cruel but mind you i guess thats intentional But Colin McFarlane's Character going to be killed by The Master off screen at the end feels sad as i think him as a reoccurring character might be fun even as a companion to The Master
Honestly i think its better than Rage of The Time Lords and gives a nice insight into both The Master and The Doctor i honestly feel like we will be seeing more of 8 and War Master in the future

He gives a Very Good performance at some points! DJ is his usual velvety charming self recruiting a complex and engaging group of rouges, so for the majority of this its a DW version of Argonauts meets Time Bandits. Is the twist predictable? Yes Is it pulled off well? You bet, the Actors really go to town 4.5/5 Regards mark687

At the moment I'm wrapping up part 3 (I'm saving the last episode until later this evening) and, after all the hassle I had downloading it & moving it to my dictaphone earlier, I'm really rather enjoying this release! (As at least one other person's mentioned previously, even more than 'Anti-Genesis', which, whilst good, I did find a little... 'Run of the mill'). You know, I'm surprised that 'the twist' hasn't been done before... EDIT - {Spoiler} Yes, yes I have just remembered 'The Switching'...

I know this is irrelevant to the plot, but... {Spoiler} Absolutely love the extended theme music at the end of The Cognition Shift. They should definitely release it as a separate track!

Enjoyed this set a lot. Great fun, very pacey and some great characters, ideas, twists and turns.
Colin McFarlane & Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo are fantastic, really strong guest performances and they seem to relish every second of it.
I was a little concerned that Rage of the Time Lords would end up being worse off, as the Doctor / Master interaction in that was great but pure exposition, and Hearts of Darkness would fare better. In the end the interaction between them both in this is mostly exposition too! However, both leads really go to town in the lead up to their confrontation, so it's not really an issue. Paul McGann continues to be at his best doing Time War stories outside of his own range; there's part of me that would like Big Finish to do a bundle of these - I'd recommend them! I'd actually quite like a story or two following what the Doctor apparently does off screen before he joins in episode three; the premise sounded promising and is pretty much Time War Eight in a nutshell.
I think what stopped me from giving this a 5/5 is the fact that, despite enjoying it, it quickly became clear that it's telling a hell of a lot of more story than the running time it's given. There could easily have been another episode before the Doctor joins events and also another one as an epilogue. It does feel like we have two stories at play, the first half of the set and the second half, that could probably do with being bridged together a bit better. As I said, the guest cast are fantastic, but they do have moments where they vanish and then reappear. The Master also plays his hand very late on, the last 15 minutes in fact, and I think it would've had more impact if we knew earlier on and listened to events unfold, rather than guessing what he's actually up to. It would've also allowed for some darker moments that are alluded to but not seen. The Master has his moments in this, but I'd like to see something more akin to Master of Callous, which was grim but it's what made this incarnation stand out.
I think the above paragraph reads a little more critical than intended. The set is good, but there's a lot more that could've been done, had the format been a little more flexible than a four story set. I said this in my previous post, but just to reiterate; loved the Master's crew, the little insights into the Time War on other planets and civilisations and the regular theme tune stings. Oh and the extended theme at the end was a real treat!
One little bit of continuity I liked was the Master playing a recording on a loop for his own pleasure. I wasn't a fan of Anti-Genesis, and Hearts of Darkness is much better, but I liked the moment where he played the Doctor's extermination on a loop and he does something similar here. It's a little touch but helps sell this incarnation.
Hearts of Darkness is definitely one I'll be giving a relisten to before the year is out. There's a lot going on, which is why I'd like it to be longer, and it's very easy to get carried away by events without them quite clicking with you as a listener!
Roll on Masterful and Killing Time, the latter of which has a trailer tucked away after the closing theme. I thought it was an epilogue for the first couple of seconds!
