2) Given her amoral nature, she could very easily be used as an ally to the Doctor, an enemy to the Doctor, a protagonist in her own right, an ally/antagonist in spin-off series (River, UNIT, etc.) - no need to stick her in a single box, repeating what she did on TV again and again. The Third Doctor would be the perfect candidate for a team-up with the Rani. A Season 10b of sorts with the Rani as a recurring ally who increasingly butts heads with the Doctor until they become enemies. It's perfect! It practically writes itself. Isn’t Mark of the Rani supposed to be their first encounter since Gallifrey? Not that that’s stopped BF before.

Not long after Jo's resignation, the Doctor is gone for six whole months... and when he returns, a new scientific advisor has taken his place! (Although to be fair, the Doctor is a little surprised she's visited Earth before in Mark... Perhaps their conversation there is just about Earth *history*? Too much of a stretch?)

The Rani is a character with loads of potential for three big reasons IMO: 1) Unlike a lot of later-era characters, she has the potential to meet earlier Doctors as their first meeting was back in their first lives, with no indication of how many times they've seen each other since Gallifrey - and nothing says Kate O'Mara was the First Rani, so BF can cast whoever they want (and recast as often as they want). 3) Her story is entirely open-ended. This is another thing that sets her apart from a lot of the other characters BF has access to - there's no ending already written for the Rani's story, so they can do whatever they want with her! I really do hope that we get more Rani eventually (and Siobhan Redmond's incarnation in particular). We should really have that Deca reunion that the Doctor talked about - Sylvester McCoy, Siobhan Redmond, Rufus Hound, Geoffrey Beevers, Ray Brooks, Anthony Keetch and a new incarnation of the War Chief!Siobhan's great yet there's something about her take I just can't quite get on board with. I think it's because she does so many adverts on TV and radio in Scotland with the exact same tone of voice she gives The Rani. I feel like The Rani is more likely to try and sell me double glazing than go up against The Doctor sometimes when I hear her stories again. She is though assured of a place in comedy heaven for her great role as Shona Spurtle in The High Life, where Alan Cumming got his big break. As for the character; I think this is a case where I would like to see what she'd be like in the Time War. What can her brilliant mind do, and can even the potential genocide of her people focus her moral compass away from her self-serving experiments into working for a cause. Could she be trusted? Would she defect if The Daleks had better technology to develop her work? BF have sometimes been accused of using the Time War a bit too much but The Rani is someone I think would be a natural to explore in that environment. Rights issues and potential over-saturation of the war may count against the idea but it's where I'd place her given free reign. I'd keep her away from The Doctor as their run-ins have been too repetitive. Since she's never been back on TV it would give BF a bit more freedom to tell that story too since, unlike The Master, we don't know what happens to The Rani ultimately but I guess we can say the same for Susan or Romana or The Monk too.

Oddly Enough The latest vortex had a question regarding the rani and Nick said that the with the recent passing of Pip Baker there are some delicate issues with the licensing of The Rani but Big Finish really want to do stuff with the Rani and are looking into possibilities for the future
Personally i can imagine The Rani having a big part of The Time War with experimenting for The Time Lords

Yes his answers all read as an odd attempt at professional detachment, maybe he was having writers block on Human Frontier 2 or creative pushback from somewhere that day. Regards mark687 Yeah, I'm not having a go as he did preface it with "sad" but surely he knows BF fans are more likely than not to know their Pip n Jane Baker from their Bob Bakers! I have a signed CD of their The Rani Reaps the Whirlwind BBV audio somewhere, Kate's got more to sink her teeth into in that than on TV. It's funny, but I didn't read his answers as either cold or professionally detached, just saw them as not assuming that the questioner knew anything in particular about the character's creators. I'd imagine there are a whole host of BF fans, if they've arrived via recent television airings, who don't know one writing Baker from another! Personally, should they be able to ever square that rights circle, I'd love to hear a rematch for the Rani and the Seventh Doctor... or, as others have said, she seems an obvious choice for the Time War.

You know what another perfect new series setting for the Rani would be? The Silence arc! Eleven probably never met the Master but nothing's stopping him from meeting another renegade like the Rani, especially after the 50th or on Trenzalore. Think about it, what better amoral scientist to help the Kovarian Chapter reverse engineer themselves a Time Lord than the Rani herself?!
