Then I suppose as you have pronounced on the subject, everyone and every web site on this planet will have to change to the thumbs up sign - which just happens to be British Sign Language for okay... or American Sign Language which would require a moving gif for the letters O and K.

I have never heard of this before this thread (though, I generally don't pay any attention to things said by white supremacists)
I think it's likely almost every gesture has some negative meaning in some culture in the world - does that mean that no-one should be allowed to use any gestures? The okay gesture is significant to Hindus and Buddhists - are they supposed to allow white supremacists to stop them from using it? Is American sign language being changed to avoid it adding extra burden to those who need to use it? And, of course, if the white supremacists can take one widely-used gesture, make it their own, preventing others from using it, they can do it again with anything. At what point should people draw the line and resist, rather than letting the white supremacists have their way?

And when someone accuses me of something, we will have a discussion.

I feel like there's two answers here: one, BF is too niche, I think, for it to be meaningfully embroiled in any kind of co-op by right-wing nuts. I don't think it makes a strong-enough start point for discussion, and i don't think it warrants much concern. And two, to people who dismiss the co-opt altogether, in a broader cultural sense outside BF's boundaries: would you give the same defence to the likes of swastika? When you see it, is your first thought, under any circumstance, 'Oh yeah, ancient Indian symbol of peace'? Language and symbology evolve, regardless of the merit of said evolution. We must be mindful not to be dismissive. I'd argue the swastika was different as as it stands now this co-opting is by a fringe group of right wingers. Yeah sure language evolves but it's up to the rest of us not to allow some internet nutjobs to take a symbol and make it hateful. I feel like my response may have been misconstrued to say 'chuck out the original meaning because of online weirdos'. Thing is, I agree with anothermanicmondas' comment on the subject - we should aim to preserve the original intent and not let fringes dictate them. My point, which I admit may not have been clear enough, was that we shouldn't ignore when symbols are perverted by groups with ulterior motives, and that handwaving the question won't allow for the proper protection of the original, not-crazy meaning.

What a very strange story, I must say this forum does widen my horizons!
We must not allow our common culture to be hijacked by extremists or 'thought policed' out of existence for no reason.
EDIT: There's a (totally genuine) olde English gesture that might come in handy as a response...

So..
either I view every use of the 'okay' sign with deep suspicion and distrust and let the racists win...
or I apply a bit of common sense to the situation, follow my instincts, sometimes take a leap of faith but mostly place my trust in what I know to be true.. and let the racists lose.
Needless to say it's not a tough choice.

Tbh I’m still not sure where the okay symbol is on the website? I thought the recommendation symbol was a thumbs up, and don’t remember it being any different?

Or are they just breeding cows with swastikas on their side these days?

It's like the people who think allowing gays rights means people can marry cars.

We don't like the swastika anymore. That was co-opted. No swastika. No ok sign. not the same thing swastikas were overtly used by the nazis as their main emblem used on flags, etc the ok sign has not had anywhere near as much misuse

We don't like the swastika anymore. That was co-opted. No swastika. No ok sign. If the okay symbol is racist because some nutters think so, then so is William Hartnell and you are proudly displaying a racist as your avatar. This is the level of crazy this conversation is currently operating on.
