3 by an actor? Ian Marter (Harry Sullivan) wrote 9 novelisations as well as Harry Sullivan’s War for the Companions Range. Sorry, I was unclear. I meant novelisations of stories they acted in, but sure I could have missed a bunch. Of those, I think Marter only wrote The Ark and The Sontaran Experiment. To which I added Hines' Evil of the Daleks.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

My copies have arrived from Waterstones, can’t wait to get stuck in! Now do I read in broadcast order or random?

As I said on another thread, nothing against the writers but I find novelisations more insteresting when it's by someone involved in the TV story.
It's been a long time since I've heard a Mark Morris story, looking back at his credits I really like his House of Blue Fire one, I think it's pretty underrated. I am especially curious about his book since he is the only one who never wrote a novelisation before.
Incidentally, I might be misremembering but didn't Gary Russell say he was retired from writing Who?

RTD has clarified on Instagram that the novels are being adapted from the full, original scripts; restoring cut dialogue, backstories, etc. My preference is still for original authors and the like, but this already sounds better than I’d anticipated it being and hopefully less of a breezy write up of the televised episodes.

Great to know. I am not that knowledgeable about classic Target, but I think writers usually worked from drafts when they were available right? I know Peel did with his Dalek ones at least.

I know that in the 80s a lot of the screenplay writers adapted their own scripts and frequently used their final submission rather than the shooting script (The Massacre springs to mind as an example of this, as do a lot of other Hartnell-era books)

I see on FB the covers for 4th Doctor "The Return Of Robin Hood" and 3rd Doctor "Josephine & The Argonauts" were posted by Paul M. Not sure if they have been released yet?

Great to know. I am not that knowledgeable about classic Target, but I think writers usually worked from drafts when they were available right? I know Peel did with his Dalek ones at least. A real mixed bag - some are clearly from earlier drafts, others (Terry’s from the late 70s and the 80s, significantly) are basically just final scripts transferred to prose. Others came up with original material especially for the books - Malcolm Hulke had a good line in original prologues in the 70s, while The Edge of Destruction has whole sections dedicated to exploring the vast rooms of the TARDIS. Ben Aaronovitch’s Remembrance of the Daleks is basically a proto-New Adventure, setting up elements of that series as well as other Cartmel Masterplan ideas and even chapters told from Dalek perspectives (it’s an absolutely fantastic book, my favourite Target). Season 26 stories all get some expansions too.

14th Doctor Specials due January 2024 Regards mark687 I really like the sound of these if done right, and it would be very cool to have Targets for Series 14 done around airing as well, though that’s likely a lot more of a cost commitment.

I just discovered that when Evil of the Daleks was repeated on TV back in the day, there was a technical interruption during the live broadcast. www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FAl_WmwW6II wonder if it will be somewhat alluded to in the novelisation, considering RTD did joke about the infamous Graham Norton glitch in the Rose one.

Thought the new batch was great.
Planet of the Ood is a fairly straightforward retelling, with some grisly deaths and a few extra scenes, but still hits hard.
The Waters of Mars has that feeling of utter dread throughout, a lovely expanded backstory for Adelaide, more background on The Flood and grotesque descriptions to boot.
The Zygon Invasion amazingly manages to be grimmer than on screen! Again it’s a relatively straightforward retelling, especially as it’s cramming two episodes in, but has just enough additional detail to add to the overall experience. I was surprised we didn’t get an extended prologue with the three Doctors, as I thought that was a shoe-in, but I think their fleeting appearance better served Kate’s resentment of the Doctor and the situation they put her in; brilliant stuff.
Kerblam! did exactly what I thought it would do; added background for Judy and Charlie and a less confused ending. No bad thing, it works well and is a fun read.

If they keep doing the illustrated hardcovers, I hope they do Day of the Doctor, as I'd love to see art of some of the bits Moffat added, particularly the revised {Spoiler} past Doctors saving Gallifrey scene . Or {Spoiler} the Curator with the Brigadier...

Or {Spoiler} the Curator with the Brigadier... When I saw the announcement for this, my exact thought was “I hope they do Day of the Doctor next”. It’d be great, especially since there’s so many added scenes that weren’t a part of the episode.

Agree, I’d buy The Day of the Doctor in a shot. I personally think that’s the only one that adds enough detail and enough visuals to warrant the double dipping, particularly with the way the novel is framed too.

Amazon have a 10 bundle listing at the bargain price of £30. Well worth it for anyone who’s only got a couple of these, or none at all. Includes a couple from the recent batch too. Another rapid turnaround in novelisations. Incidentally has anyone read any of the 60th special ones from the ebooks? Just wondering if I should give them a look once they’re in print.
