I've been looking forward to this one but had completely forgotten this was being released this week. Downloading now.
If anyone wants me for the next couple of days, I'll be in 1970...

This one had a great idea, but I lost interest it just went on & on & on. Lacked a real sense of urgency. I guess that is an accurate reflection of the 7 parters of this era. Cast were all good.

Well I thought that was fantastic. It loses a little steam in the last two episodes, but overall it’s a taut political thriller with Daisy Ashford getting the chance to really shine. Yet another set that shows just how strong the 3DAs are!

I think if this is listened to all in one go then the middle bits may appear to drag a little, but split it over a number of sittings and it really impresses. Eddie Robson has written the 3DA's best 7 parter so far in my opinion. Completely original, but given the 'Series 7 treatment' of being political/sci-fi/bleak early '70s television (a style not unlike early Counter Measures releases). I absolutely loved this. And yes, the cast are all excellent - and yes, it proves once again that the 3DAs are the most consistently brilliant Doctor Who range BF currently has. In fact, I'm going to listen to it again.

Oh my. „Police believed the appearance of the Nazi was an elaborate practical joke.“ I have to agree. This was not in any way an Arian Soldier- no idea what language he was supposed to be talking, but it certainly wasn‘t understandable German. If you have to save money on having native speakers, at least let an English speaker do this who has heard German at least once in his live, not just some fake grumbly growling that they heard in other fake Nazi shows. No idea. The only words I could make out was Behörden and kontaktieren. Hitler would have had him shot in an instant as an English spy. Sorry, just started on this and this was BAD. Let us see if this develops into some kind of believable story after this, hopefully it is indeed English spies.
so far, rated „Z“ for zero effort.

I loved this! I have always had some conflicted feeling about the 3rd Doctor era. I don't love Pertwee's Doctor but he had some of the best stories ever written for Doctor Who. But one thing I've never been conflicted on is how much I love Liz Shaw, and Daisy did such a great job in this. The entire cast was terrific. I didn't feel like it dragged at all. In fact, I didn't even remember that it was a 7-parter. Just an excellent listen.

Well.... The performances were great. All the actors are really growing into their roles and they are pretty close to their 70s counterparts. The sound effects and music also are doing a great job emulating a 70s story.
However, I have to agree, it loses steam in the middle. As timeleschild says, it just misses a sense of urgency. I think one of the issues is the villain- they just do not come across as very threatening and from the get go it is hinted at that they can be pretty reasonable. So we are left with a decent run-around where the only pressure is to be in time to reason with the villain before they do something catastrophic. The idea of the monster / villain is a good one, but it reminded me of other sci-fi stories where a similar trope was used.
So in the end, we have a decent audio, with great performances, but which just misses the necessary "oomph" and excitement. But that might just be due to emulating a long 70s story.

I really enjoyed this, one of BF's better releases of late. I think any 7-parter is better listened to over a few days. I stretched it out and I didn't get the feeling of it dragging in the middle. I feel the end was a tad anti-climactic but not enough to ruin what had come before.
We are so lucky to be having stories like this with the 3rd Doctor and the Brigadier sounding and acting like they did in the 70's.
I give this a 4/5

To hear the short music sting of the theme, like a cold open but during the episode - where the title would air on screen on a Season 7 story like Ambassadors? Brilliant. I love stories that take Doctors to new places but when they try something authentic and put in these little touches? Magic. That's the kind of attention to detail that puts this right in it's correct place. It's teatime in 1970. And despite Pertwee being one of my least favourite Docs, that year is brilliant. They ripped off Nigel Kneale so much that it was bound to! And this has more than a bit of Kneale about it too.
I loved this. Thought it was a brilliant espionage story - a bit Manchurian Candidate, a bit Le Carre - and was maybe the best Liz Shaw full cast story BF have done. The villains are fine but this isn't a story focused on them. It's a character piece and closer to a more sci-fi Callan or Adam Adamant than anything else.
Listen to early 3DAs and it's amazing how much Tim's voice has come along. The performance has always been strong but he now sounds the part and acts impeccably every time. It's one of the most evocative stories of a specific season of the show in years. Remember when they did some S18 things a few years back in the 4DAs and, well, it sounded nothing like anything to do with that season. Eddie Robson completely gets that one specific first year of Pertwee's era.
Just brilliant. Will be top 5 of the year for me no doubt.

Absolutely loved this. Seven parter that uses every minute to great effect and never once feels like a drag. It also does that very delicate balance of being authentic to the era it’s recreating, whilst being its own thing that will stand amongst the rest. Lovely character piece for Liz, who’s wonderfully performed by Daisy Ashford, in what I think is her best performance to date. Treloar & Culshaw don’t put a foot wrong either.
Only criticism I have is I hate the way the theme stings are done. They just don’t work on audio and are far too delayed to the point where they’re a distraction rather than an enhancement. It’s the same on previous attempts too. Very minor in the grand scheme, mind!

My take on Intelligence for War is up at CultBox - in short, loved it (but then I'm a sucker for Season 7!)

A solid engaging entertaining 7 parter, I can't get enough of these Third Doctor adventures. Pretty much like all of the 3DA's now, as they are without doubt one of the best ranges that Big Finish are currently producing. The script, music and performances in the 3DA's all combine perfectly to capture the Jon Pertwee era. They could almost be missing Third Doctor stories at times.
Congrats to everyone involved on a job well done...
