I’m enjoying the series and I think monthly releases are conceptually a good fit for the range… with some short-term caveats. I’m mindful this season was intended as a pair of box sets, and likely would have been structured differently if the creators had a six-month schedule in mind. Rationing it out after the fact has a few interesting side effects. This first half/volume is all about Devis’s emotional journey; the individual mysteries are secondary to that. Like many past releases, it’s designed to be a quick 1-2-3 punch, more than the sum of its parts. Listening month by month, I’ve found I have higher expectations for each case to be a compelling one. Of the three episodes so far, only the third felt to me like genuine mystery (without an immediately obvious villain). Not to say every episode needs to be a whodunnit, or that a crime can’t just be a backdrop for the character moments, but it feels more conspicuous without the momentum of a box set. Rather than “a slow building set that ends on a strong note”, I’ve shamefully found myself thinking “I only really loved one of these three episodes”. It’s the familiar weekly-viewing-vs-binge TV debate, pros and cons amplified by a slower monthly pace. None of this is actually a huge complaint. The whole range is a gift and I’m glad for all the time I get with these old friends. It’s just an interesting case study now monthly BF episodes are becoming the New Normal. On a different note: how do you all feel about the framing device of a main character’s apparent death? I don’t buy it enough to be drawn in by it — to the extend that I’m not sure they’re actually expecting us to believe it. Is it an elaborate double bluff?

Over on CultBox, I've just landed a review of the first 3 episodes. Great stories, new dimensions of Devis for Trevor Cooper to play with. Fantastic.

Oh that framing device,,, I'd be surprised if they were killing off a legacy character - unless Trevor Cooper wanted to stop playing him, I suppose. My guess is it's Devis taking a leave of absence, or going undercover to look for Sophie and faking his death? The title of ep 6 is a bit concerning though...
