Started on Batman "Hush". Got it in the sale last week.
While reading it in the garden, I discovered a glaring educational deficit in my niece and nephew "What are you reading?" I show them a picture of Batman doing his thing. Asking them if they think it is great or what. Answer: "Who is that?" "Batman! It is Batman!" "Who is Batman?" I immediately went to tell my sister about the entertainment choices for these kids. Paw Patrol my behind. We grew up on Adam West. This is a cultural deficit!

Frankly, at least in America, I think DC is more and more out of the pop culture zeitgeist and the only thing I think you can really blame is how they've been used outside of comics in the two decades. Bad movies, okay TV shows, okay (at best) merchandising. I think Superman and Batman are just starting to move the way of Woody Woodpecker where at best you get a passing "Oh hey that guy!" I blame gross mishandling of the DC movies.

I blame gross mishandling of the DC movies. To be fair, my niece and nephew are 6 and 4, although I admit I certainly knew who Batman as in kindergarten due to the Adam West series. And my sister is not really that much into pop culture.
She had a total culture shock when a friend of ours (who has become a famous German cosplayer of all people!) took my sister to an open day at the comic book store of the next larger town and people turned up dressed up. My sister also thinks I am crazy for attending conventions. At least I am sure my niece and nephew will know who Harry Potter is since my sister is a big fan. Plus my niece will be initiated into the teenage vampire series since vampire soap operas is all my sister has been reading for decades.

Sanctum - which was excellent, a US submarine crew find some subterranean caves and also plenty of gory trouble in the the form of demons that start to possess the crew.
Strontium Dog - The Killing. A tournament of death, with not only the deceptive Osmongs against Johnny Alpha and Wulf but also Steelkreig the android. Great stuff.

The Killing is a classic from back in the day in my books. That story really stuck in my mind as a wee nipper, as did many of the strips back then. King Carlos on excellent form as always.

Remember his art in The Apocalypse War? The experimental 'Stump' guns that could slice through the plasteen streets in the sky (which were full of Sov Tanks of course) but they had the nasty habit of overheating.

I'm a little behind on Tom King's run on "Batman" - does anybody know what the difference is between the "Knightmares" trade paperback (out already) and the previously-solicited hardback (not due till next month). Amazon says the tpb is longer, but I'm not sure their pagecounts are always accurate. Both books cost almost the same, and I wouldn't want to buy the 'wrong' one.

Finished Batman vs. Predator. It was actually quite enjoyable and not as cheesy as I thought it would be. For some reason, I especially liked the art in the third story of the collection, and I also really enjoyed Robin in this although I normally am not the biggest fan of the idea of Robin.
Then I got another couple of Batman comics in the Joker sale.
I got Batman Europe and Batman Damned, mainly because the art looked really awesome.
Have started on Batman Europe and yes, the artwork is fantastic and gets more surreal and psychedelic the deeper we follow the plot. The story itself is... superficial and does not really grip me. So far, it is developing exactly along the lines I was expecting. But hey, maybe they surprise me in the last third of the book?
Then I did some googling for the reviews for these comics and found out that Batman Damned was a bit... controversial. Because the first edition included a drawing of some previously unseen bits of Bruce's anatomy. I honestly have no idea why there is still this hard to dissipate belief that the inclusion of human genitalia creates great art. It goes back to the classical era, would be my guess. Why this has to be extended to art in comics, I will never know. Even the over-sexualisation of female (and male!) superheroes can be too much for me and is one of the reasons I had not been reading superhero comics for a long time and have only just recently dabbled into them again. Notable exceptions which I did follow on occasion in the past 20 years were Daredevil, Wolverine and of course the brilliant Hawkeye comics. Which appealed exactly because they tried new things with their art and took a sharp departure from the usual esthetic.
Well, a quick check revealed that the digital copy I got for Batman Damned is the censored version and I am spared the view of certain... too much information.

Working on Eastman & Laird's original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics. I was very slightly too young for their cartoon heyday, so this is the most time I've ever spent on Turtles. I like it. They don't pull their punches with violence, but it's not all dark and miserable as I was led to believe, either. Besides, they had a 19 page car chase in which they name-dropped Hill Street Blues and NASCAR within a few panels of each other, so clearly they know how to butter me up.
Also been reading a lot of Spawn lately. I know people tend to write him off as edgy trash but I don't care, he's always been cool to me.

Caught up on and finished off Hickman’s HoXPoX series. Still loving it, thrilled to see where he and the other writers take things next!

i backed a couple of indiegogo actually 3 one was a graphic novel about hannmibal barka that was supposed to be released like 3 years ago ive given up on that one
the second one with shipping was 25 bucks for 100 pages the next one came to 35 dollars with shipping for a 144 pages
some folkes are saying this is the future model for comics these seem really expensive to me i feel like a dunce backing the ones i have
marvel epic collections give over 400 pages i can get them for a bit over 20 dollars on instock trades
looking at a bunch of comic projects a lot of them sound good but i just want to buy the book
sell it to me on amazon or something.
one of my favorite artist mitch breitweiser and his wife the awesome colorist bettie breitweiser have this book coming out and
its just too expensive to back id buy it if they putit up for sale but as crowd funded they just as you to over pay.
yeahit be great to back them i cant see myself paying 25 to 30 bucks for 100 pages
what do you think? of a model where every project is crowdfunded?

Finished the 13th Doctor comics where she meets the Corsair. Nice little story, pretty lightweight, good entertainment for a short while, but lacking depth or anything really meaningful. Comfort food.

Polished off the first volume of Usagi Yojimbo. It's pretty good. Reminds me of Samurai Jack in tone.
